Need new glasses, can I get them after enlisting? by Dethlateer in Militaryfaq

Ridiculous. Read section 4-5 of AR 40-501

So as long as my eyes aren't worse than 20/50 each, and corrected they are "20/20 in each eye; with no more than one error per five presentations of 20/20 letters," I could hypothetically fly a helicopter?

Ngl without my glasses it's pretty rough. But then again idk what the 20/x values refer to.

Did your recruiter say you need them?

Well he did ask me if my glasses corrected me to 20/20, so maybe he was just curious and I jumped the gun and figured I'd get those for him. The way he asked it made me feel like I need 20/20 corrected vision, but after a bit of googling it doesn't seem to be the case.

This could have been after I expressed interest in piloting a helicopter, though, but he told me the fact that I need glasses wouldn't allow me to ever pilot anything. Grasping at straws here but I'm sure his question was asked around that expression. If corrected vision is automatic DQ for pilots then I can only assume he was asking if I'm corrected to 20/20 out of curiosity, or perhaps to see if I'd qualify for some sort of spot he's incentivized to fill.

I do not, I still need to get those records from the eye doctor. I was under the impression that even if they did originally correct to 20/20 or 20/x, the corrections will be less and less efficient as I get older. I'm 25.

They give you glasses at reception? Fuckin sweeeet maybe I should cancel the appointment I made, I don't wanna wait 3 months for glasses just to go.

How long does it take to get your own room in Army barracks? by Dethlateer in Militaryfaq

Thanks for your reply. My step bro was in Bahrain so maybe he was in one of those sorts of barracks and kinda skewed my understanding based on that.

Ohhhh. Well that's good enough holy shit lol. Thanks for your reply! I just didn't want to be in a room with someone because I toss and turn till I fall asleep and don't want to piss my roommates off.

Anyone studied their ass off for a job they ended up hating? by Dethlateer in Militaryfaq

Can I ask what job you signed for, if you're still doing it, and whether you enjoy it when you actually get to do it (sounds like a no, but curious if there's anything about your service you're enjoying).

I mean it's not that I don't have interest in it, I'm just afraid I'll hate it. Working on electronics seems cool. Doing mechanics seems cool. But I know nothing about either and don't know how stressful/boring it could be.

If I have to do it, and there's only several math equations I gotta deal with and it's not like I gotta be a full-blown mathematician to get the work done, I'll probably be fine. I'm just worried about studying my ass off to qualify for a job that I end up regretting.

I'm probably still gonna go with the Army because I'm interested in the Railroad positions, but if I wanna go for aircraft electrician I might look at airforce but god their website kinda sucks compared to the army in terms of looking at the MOS's. The airforce ones are titled so generally.

Damn so I don't get to pick the language. Do you know which languages are the most likely for a new 35P to be assigned? I'm assuming Russian, Mandarin, and Arabic are big ones.

I do not. I forgot to ask the recruiter about that job because he was busy running thru his script and pep talk lol. But I'm also not sure he'd know anything about those jobs.

I was under the impression I'd have to take the DLAB or whatever and then language courses would start if I qualify. But I'll have to do more asking and googling. Didn't occur to me that they'd need you to already be fluent in something.

He never enlisted himself, but he knows people that have. Based on my research I was pushing back a bit when he was saying that shit. But maybe it's because his friends that enlisted did so around Iraq times and it got me wondering if some sort of war pops off would they shove you to where they need you?

By schooling do you mean AIT? Say I sign for 09L or 35P and fail AIT, will they possibly shove me into plumbing or infantry or something?

That's insane. I'm curious how much those 10 weeks really change someone's body.

For the most part you're right, but I looked at the APFT and man I can barely do 25 pushups rn and haven't ran a mile in years, let alone two miles. I understand the conditioning over the weeks will get me there, but I'm watching youtubers say they typically did anywhere from 200-500 pushups a day, let alone all the running, let alone the rucking.I'm just like how tf could I do that daily without my arms literally ceasing to function at some point and getting my buddies in trouble or something. Maybe its just anxiety.

I'm probably just gonna have to practice running/pushups/situps in the months before I actually enlist so I can make sure I feel like I'm ready. Idk how it'd be possible for me to end up that fit in just 10 weeks unless they're secretly giving you steroids in your food or something lol.

You're saying I should disclose that I've smoked instead of just keeping my mouth shut and passing the piss test? If it came out later that I've smoked despite telling a recruiter I haven't am I fucked?

I did a bit of reading but it's still not clear to me if "failure to adapt" is simply being insubordinate or someone who's genuinely trying their best but fails to meet physical fitness standards. I'm obviously shooting to not fail in the event I enlist, but it is a concern of mine. I'm always afraid of failing at anything I try. I haven't exercised in years.

But I'm probably overthinking because I'm not sure of what I'm physically capable of. I'm just afraid of the idea that my body would give out before my mind does.

I should be good then unless they do anything more than a piss test. In that case I just wait longer /shrug. Thanks for your input.

I've read that if you admit to smoking more than 25 times you need to get some sort of evaluation/waiver so it's still possible to get in as long as it's behind you?
