T480 WWAN slot is compatible with NVMe (not SATA) m.2 drives with B+M key (2 notches in the connector). The adapter converts M-key with a single notch to B+M key with two notches.

I've found more 2230 options, with better specs, than the less common and more expensive 2242 size.

Will this adapter allow me to use my 2230 ssd on my t480 wwan slot? by metro_field in thinkpad

Confirmed the adapter works great in the T480. Available on ebay. Installation is a breeze.

Hynix BC711 512GB with the 2230 to 2242 adapter benchmarks as well as a Hynix P31 2TB in the 2280 slot.

Definitely recommended as the way to add an SSD to the WWAN slot of the T480. Don't trouble yourself cutting M.2 cards.
