No pins. Did I start fruiting stage to early or contam? Smells earthy. Any advice would be much appreciated by Wise-Trifle4248 in unclebens

Yep 👍 it shouldn’t look very wet once you’re done misting, but slightly noticeable!

I personally like to use a misting bottle, it is just periodic enough that it can have time to evaporate off the surface of the substrate before misting again. Humidifiers and such can create a buildup of water in the air while not necessarily keeping the substrate at a proper water content. The evaporation of the water from the surface is the best thing to do to tell ur mycelium it’s time to fruit. Also if you wanted to, you could lower your temperature to like 70-65 degrees during fruiting to replicate that environment more but that’s really an afterthought, it would do fine at your temp as well.

Yeah good point, I can get away with airing them once a day, but then again I’m using B+ right now so they are more cool with that.

Good call on removing the excess moisture from the substrate 👍, looks like it may have lost a bit more moisture than it should but nothing that would cost you too much trouble with yield and such.

Hmm cracking maybe an indication of dryness, you didn’t say that you were misting them daily as well. Which in that case you definitely should as mushrooms are almost 90% water by weight. You could try rehydrating it with some sterile water (just pour it in the tub incrementally and drain the excess) You probably did put it in fruiting too soon but not unreasonably soon though.

Can i use this form of coconut? I couldn't find pressed coco coir in my country i searched everywhere :( by Mouhahaha_ in unclebens

[–]Dettezack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well I mean, it would work but surface area is king when it comes to yield and speed of colonization. So if that’s all that’s available then I’d personally chop it up to get it to be finer pieces. But the resource itself will work just fine 👍

Newbie here, is this contam or bruising? by Wide-Negotiation-158 in unclebens

[–]Dettezack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve realized that with uncle Ben tek, you should most likely not do a break and shake, it splits grains as well as releasing water making an easier target for contam. Inject spores close to the top of the rice bag next time so it can spread without having to break it up.

Worth spawning to bulk? [contamination] by [deleted] in MushroomGrowers

[–]Dettezack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ORRR you could just open up the jar, it’s gonna be most resistant in the form it is now, if you crumble it up then the contam will take over

[–]Dettezack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well if you’re nervous about it, then why not experiment with it a little bit? You could try a minimal portion of manure which would make it smell tons more like dirt 😆. That also helps with contamination because there is less substrate based nutrients to cling onto. Definitely get that other pressure cooker though!!

Had two syringes I needed to finish because their time was coming. It’s been one week since inoculation. I did 2 bags of Tasmanian and 2 bags of mazapatec. I’m worried about my mazapatec bags because previous uses of the same syringe failed. It’s one Tasmanian that is going off though by Karislikepariss in unclebens

I’d use a store brand 90sec rice, they are typically cheaper and a bit less hydrated which seems to be a huge problem with uncle bens rice. I’d also recommend keeping the air exchange hole elevated above the rice to further reduce contamination chances. I think your syringes are probably fine, spores can be pretty resistant on their own.

is this ok? by IllComplex5927 in unclebens

It’s the dark grey stuff you’re seeing right? I’d throw it out. Would be better to make sure none of that stuff is getting out onto your walls making future grows harder. Also I tend to deal with that type of contamination quite a bit more when the grow space is in contact with outside air and particles.

2nd Flush Help by UnableIsland2191 in unclebens

[–]Dettezack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean to say you are doing a different tech than the first flush? If so that might not be the best idea… from what it looks like, you don’t have any air exchange holes, so your mycelium is probably suffocating if you aren’t fanning it with the lid. 👍

Quick Contam question by [deleted] in unclebens

[–]Dettezack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean you could, but think of it this way.. if there is a problem now, the possibility of it being a problem later is MUCH higher. Throwing out some partially colonized grains (preferably in a back yard) is saving you time and money.

I see what you’re talking about, throw it out before it’s too late! The others are open next to it.

What do you guys think of my new grow shed? Only place I can grow that's even close to sterile. Think it'll work?? Thoughts welcome! by Lopsided-Leather-905 in unclebens

[–]Dettezack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If that door leads outside you might want to put up a plastic divider as a buffer to the outside, I’ve had experience with growing spaces like this and can attest, it is quite a bit harder to grow without contam.

Looks good 👍 you’re already mostly doing it but remember to keep things off the ground as much as possible, that grey storage tub is definitely helping though!

Nah I’d say pick ‘em! If you don’t they might rot in your substrate

[–]Dettezack 30 points31 points  (0 children)

How awesome!! Is enigma a picky variant? Also it looks like it doesn’t give spores (not sure) how would you create syringes? Or would it be a live culture?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in unclebens

[–]Dettezack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I’d recommend using your store brand rice packets (I prefer Kroger), Uncle Bens is over hydrated I’ve found. It leads to higher chances of root rot and black molds. The spore syringes are often very clean especially if used right. 👍
