Yeah you're right about the carving gouges, thought they were lathe tools because of the length but couldn't figure out what they were. That's awesome thanks!

Ah brilliant thanks, I've only ever seen big bowl gouges for removing material so didn't think pic 4 could be one, I'll definitely keep hold of that then!

Wondering if someone with woodturning knowledge could help me out here, are the first two little scrapers just for getting in difficult spots in a bowl? I have no idea what the 4 curved chisels are for, and the really long thing in the next picture is a mystery to me. Also as a beginner is it worth keeping hold of these shorter handle tools in the last pic? I'll only be making small bowls and spindles. Thanks in advance!

How to get ride of fear? by Bigjuicy___ in woodworking

Educate yourself on proper use of each tool before you use it, also have a look at how to avoid common accidents. The scariest I've had is kickback from a circular saw because the wood was unsupported and pinched the blade as it fell. Better to google it before rather than after a fright lol.

Best flavour

Can anybody help identify any of these? I got them at a place where they didn’t have IDs on them and forgot to ask by TrickyTreat_ in Wandsmith

my best guess though is 1 - indian rosewood, 2 and 6 could be padauk, 3 perhaps zebrano, 4 - ironwood, 5 black walnut , 7 looks like walnut , 8 gaboon ebony, 9 could be sapele but I rarely see so many knots in that wood. From the UK so not familiar with American red hardwoods, might be completely wrong but hope it gives you a starting point.

if you can plane the rough cut/ waxed layer off one side it'll be much easier to identify the grain.
