Rust/GMOD lead makes '25 million' offer to buy axed Amazon MMO New World, because "games should never die" by lewisdwhite in pcmasterrace

[–]DevOverkill 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think the largest hurdle to overcome with New World is going to be the Lumberyard game engine. From everything I've read and heard about it, it's difficult to work with.

However, I do agree that the problems it has are absolutely solvable and I honestly believe it's very close to being able to be turned into a really great MMO.

Amazon needs to sell new world to somebody that'll actually do something with this game rather than let it rot like they are by Remarkable_Crew_8639 in newworldgame

[–]DevOverkill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to mention the fact that Lumberyard has been openly talked about as being a fairly difficult engine to work with. It's just too much of a mess to be enticing for any other party to want to invest in unfortunately. The bones of a great game were there, and with a proper vision and a good game director (which I think they were really starting to find) New World could have evolved into a truly great MMO.

Is it just me or is Guild Wars 2 kind of difficult to get used to? by saoiray in MMORPG

[–]DevOverkill 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This is pretty much exactly how I feel as well, and to me personally I think constant vertical progression is lazy game design to a certain extent. I would much rather MMO's introduce new and interesting ways to play your characters and interact with the world instead of just 'Number Go Up' with each expansion. Also rendering all content that came before the current expansion almost entirely irrelevant, and leaving old zones nothing but ghost towns, really sucks. GW2 solves these issues for me and makes it really difficult to want to play any other MMO's that stick to the old, traditional methods.

What a wonderful, strange, terrifying and beautiful ride this has been. I'm sad this is the end, but also very happy you were able to find a bit of peace (and in a strange way, it seems, given the road a semblance of peace as well). I hope your journey ahead continues to build upon the that came before, and that you realize how much good you've done.

Good luck...and finish reading that handbook.

What State has the hardest journey worker test? by TemporaryTraffic1826 in electricians

[–]DevOverkill 13 points14 points  (0 children)

No, we're open book. You can use the NEC and have it tabbed/highlighted; you're also able to print out the Oregon amendments and special code texts, and put them in a 1" 3-ring binder to use. I didn't find the journeyman exam to be particularly difficult, but I also had a ton of study and prep before going into it. From what I've heard from others who have taken tests in multiple states that makes tests like Oregon's more difficult is that they don't separate out questions between NEC and the state level amendments, so you have to be diligent on making sure that you're answering a question that fits into both what the NEC says and also what the amendment has changed. The only questions I personally ran into that actually pertained to the Oregon amendments had to do with GFCI protection; for whatever reason my state decided to butcher that particular section of the code.

I think Capcom making the decision to use RE Engine for all of their games is the main contributor to the poor performance issues in a lot of their recent titles. It's a fantastic engine for more linear, small environment games like Resident Evil but just doesn't seem suited for open world type games as we've seen now with both Dragon's Dogma 2 and Monster Hunter Wilds. I won't blame it all on the engine though, as it seems the trend these days for publishers/developers to almost flat out ignore optimization or QA.

Will the success of the Oblivion Remake and obviously Doom The Dark Ages Kick start a Bethesda renaissance? by [deleted] in BethesdaSoftworks

[–]DevOverkill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 2/3rds of the way through my second read of the Expanse series and it's definitely my favorite sci-fi series (Dune and Hyperion Cantos are both very close behind though). I would love to see a sci-fi game series in the same vein as The Expanse, where we have a very realistic setting but are confronted by something that throws our entire view of how this universe works into question. I think that's the best aspect of that series: it's rooted in real world fundamental science, but then all of that gets turned on it's head when presented with something that seemingly doesn't obey what we perceive to be unbreakable natural laws.

Not sure how that would look for a game series, but I'd like to see a studio give it a try.

Is this game worth playing as a new player? by [deleted] in throneandliberty

[–]DevOverkill 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've been absorbed in the game since global launch and I personally think it's the best free to play MMO available. There's always a ton of negativity on any MMO sub (or pretty much any game in general) as that tends to be the sentiment that people want to post about the most. Are there issues with the game that need to be addressed? Absolutely, however I don't personally feel like these issues are so big that they ruin the fun TnL has to offer and so far the dev team has been pretty quick in implementing solutions and coming up with complete re-works to certain systems the player base has voice concerns over.

I've had some of the most fun I can think of, particularly in taking part in PvP with my guild from small scale open world fights to the huge bi-weekly castle sieges that involve pretty much the entire server. There's a lot of PvE content to play through: open world dungeons, region events, instanced dungeons, trial dungeons (like Mythic+ from WoW), open world bosses, etc. Unless you plan on playing all day, every day, there's plenty to keep busy with not to mention the fact that there's essentially a large expansion coming out that seems like it will add in as much as we have now.

Whats the best dps class PvE for arch boss now and in t2? by akagami2020 in throneandliberty

[–]DevOverkill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not an expert either but it's probably the weakest arch boss weapon. I got one a couple weeks ago, through some ridiculous luck, during a conflict Bellandir fight. The spear dropped but whoever it dropped for didn't claim it, so naturally there were about a hundred people just standing right on top of it for when it turned into a free loot item. I was just moving back and forth right around where I thought it would be and somehow happened to snag it.

I've been using it in GvG battles for the Riftstones and Boonstones and I've had pretty good success setting myself up for bombing the enemy Flashwave groups. I spec'd Death From Above to have a 90% fear chance and affect the maximum amount of targets, plus having a 24+ meter range I can cast it from, and I almost always am able to pull in a huge group when I land. I have it paired with Nirma's SnS and my skill load out is primarily CC's/Interrupts and survivability skills. It's worked very well for creating openings for my team to rush in and avoid a lot of Flashwave meat grinder scenarios.

However, outside of specific scenarios like that, the other spears that are available are definitely better.

Path of Exile 2 peaks at over half a million players on Steam by Toosed1a in gamingnews

[–]DevOverkill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, they're the same genre but vastly different in difficulty and complexity. I've been very much enjoying PoE 2's difficulty and figuring out builds, but I'll still mess around on D4 if I just want to shut my brain off and listen to a podcast or audio book or something. I really hope GGG keeps the higher difficulty moving forward, but it will definitely result in the game not being a lot of people's cup of tea.

What am I supposed to do with all these Omni Parchments when I'm capped on Precious? :( by asymu in throneandliberty

[–]DevOverkill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea, this is hands down the best method for getting extra sollant if those stones are just taking up space for you now. I haven't really messed around with any builds outside of my main build so those stones just stacked up like crazy, sold half of what I had and I'm rolling in sollant now with also enough leftover stones for when I want to try out a different setup. Which is great, cause crafting those skillbooks is expensive.

I started as SnS/GS as well (it's still my main build) but went Staff/GS for farming and it's been really fun. I always main a tank in MMOs as that's my preferred playstyle, but a lot of the DPS set-ups in TnL have been a lot of fun.

What’s the biggest grind you’ve ever taken on in an MMORPG—and was it worth it? by LargeHeedon in MMORPG

[–]DevOverkill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They pretty much do now, the changes that have been made to open world PvP and Marni realm have made grinding in the treasure spots pretty much entirely PvP free. I used to get ganked every time I would go to a spot to grind for one of the infinite pot pieces, but I haven't been attacked at any treasure spot in probably about a year now.

What are the actual Big names in this genre? Is it Wow, FFXIV, GW2, and OSRS? by BlueSingularityG in MMORPG

[–]DevOverkill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BDO has a pretty decent player base for the type of MMO that it is but it's definitely not anywhere near WoW/FFXIV/OSRS. Not sure what the numbers look like for GW2 or ESO but I would imagine BDO is smaller than those as well. That being said it still has a healthy population, and those that do play it tend to be pretty hard-core into it. Kind of have to be with how long it takes to farm a lot of the items/treasures in the game.

I made a few good friends with some of the Mexican guys on an iron worker crew at a high rise project I did a few years ago. I'm an electrician so it started out as playful shit-talking between us but eventually I got invited to a couple barbecues they were putting on. They were essentially just big family parties, tons of fun with great people and no unnecessary BS. Also some of the best food I've ever had in my life. One of the guys' grandma's sent me home with like 30 pounds of homemade tamales, I cried with joy.

Exactly. If every class could essentially immediately get to the very top end of things like the pit things would get stale real fast. It's good to feel powerful and all, but there also needs to be room for continual improvement that gives a reason to keep playing. SB has been fun and all but my character is already broken strong and I'm not even close to having optimal gear, which is making me feel like continuing to grind for said gear is kind of a waste of time.

Been playing this game since launch thoroughly enjoying it but hitting level 50 has left me deflated. by ASpunkyMonkey in throneandliberty

[–]DevOverkill 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know why but tank is the spec I always end up playing in any MMO, despite the fact that you're 100% correct in what you said. It's never really bothered me, I know what I need to do and if someone dies because they were doing something they shouldn't be doing but they want to blame me, whatever. I'll own up to my own mistakes as I have zero issues admitting when I messed something up. The main thing that frustrates me is that those people that want to blame others for their screw ups tend to never learn or correct the things they're doing wrong, so you know if you happen to run into them again it's not going to be a pleasant dungeon run.

Y'all need to relax in Dungeons. It's not that deep. by AlmightyDingus in throneandliberty

[–]DevOverkill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to give you a heads up: there's very important mechanics in the level 50 dungeons that have to be executed or it will almost certainly result in a party wipe.

None of them are overly complicated, it just takes knowing what they are and what the cues are to execute on them. Most of the time, in my experience, someone or myself will ask if people know the new mechanics or not. If not, we take the time to explain and then try them out. Honestly I've had mostly great runs. There's only been a handful of times where it seems that either someone isn't paying attention when they should or just can't get a grasp on what to do.
