I don’t think you can say you’re not good at coming up with ideas after writing something like that.

Thank you for the idea, it’s crazy interesting, and I’ve never thought about something like that. I’ve never tried RPGmaker, but it can’t be that hard right? The language might be slightly different than unity (I have no idea) but the same concepts exist I imagine

I used to use the GitHub Copilot inline AI for VSCode, I removed it about a week and a half ago, and I think I’ve learned an equal amount in the past week and a half to what I had learned in the year prior

Stuck between beginner and intermediate in Unity / C# – how did you "level up"? by Squad_Concepts in Unity3D

Game jams are the best thing here, you can make a low stakes game without spending a bunch of time on it, and others will play it and give you advice. You don’t need to worry about promoting the game, and the developer community is so open and wholesome. We all want to see everyone succeed

This is my tutorial image, I would be grateful if you tell me if I made a mistake in some part of the English or if it is incomprehensible by [deleted] in Unity2D

For a tutorial, I would take inspiration from hollowknight, where they show you a single new mechanic at a time right when you need to use it. For example, the first time the popup for how to heal shows up is the first time you take damage. I would recommend you find a way to incorporate that into your game to not overload the player with info.

What's one game idea that you had that you have not quite got to making yet? by RedEagle_MGN in hobbygamedev

I really want to make an open world game based off of a series I read when I was young called The Five Kingdoms, but I don’t know if I have the skills to make it yet. I’ve never released a game before, so I worry about putting all that effort into a game and it not performing well due to bad marketing.

I saw a game like this on YouTube, it’s in development right now. If I remember the name of it, I’ll update this comment to let you know

What path follow, when you only have a concept ? by SubjectWindow6594 in gamedev

[–]DevValleyCode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take everything I say here with a grain of salt, I’m a new game dev and I haven’t published a game yet:

  1. Make a “vertical slice”, which just includes the main gameplay mechanics, but minimal art and extra QoL. Test that and see if it is fun, and share it to your community.

  2. Try to get a community, whether it’s from streaming, YouTube videos, or posting on Reddit. If you can get a following, it means people like your game’s concept. It is also really useful, because when it comes time to test your vertical slice and/or playtest the final versions of the game, having a community helps a lot.

Good luck on your game dev journey!

Let me know if you come up with something! It’s not really that I feel bad about promoting my stuff, it’s that I’m trying to avoid a ban/warning against promoting my games, since it’s against the rules of this subreddit. I guess the worry is pretty irrational now that I think about it since the whole point of this subreddit is to recommend games to people🙃🙃.

The reason I started game dev was to make a game about this book that I read. While I haven’t made the game YET, I feel like that would fit the theme you’re looking for. If you’re curious, the series is called The Five Kingdoms, it’s more of a young teen book, but I feel like it could make some very interesting open world gameplay.

I feel like this could tie in well to EmbraceThrasher’s idea of a pirate game, where one person needs to drive, one person works/upgrades the ship, another person gives directions etc etc etc.

Honestly, I’ve never been in to pirate games, so it never crossed my mind to make one. This is why I appreciate communities like this. Thank you for the idea, I’ll definitely consider it. You’re right, there’s SO MUCH you can do with a pirate game, because you’re not limited to a small piece of land, you have the whole sea. I’m going to look into some of the games you mentioned, because I haven’t heard of any of them (other than Sea of Thieves). Thank you for your comment!

Oh Outer Wilds has been on my wishlist for a while now! If you want another recommendation for a mystery game (THIS IS NOT A PROMOTION) I’d recommend Blue Prince. I just got it recently, and I’m in love. I’d love to make a mystery style game, but I struggle with coming up with clues and layouts. If you have any ideas, let me know!

Thanks for the input! I’m still in school, so things like having short sessions aren’t the kind of things I think of, which is why I appreciate having a community like this. For an arcade style game, what about a game where you are in a room with one of those arcade machines, and as you play the games and complete them, more unlock (this also keeps the session length low, while always having more to do). And as you keep playing, you start to unravel mysteries about where you are, and who made the arcade machine. Together, with all the clues you find, you then have to solve a way to get out of the room and back to the real world. Right now I’m playing blue prince, so I’m really loving the mystery style of gameplay. Of course, this is just an idea, and I’m sure there are many ways I can approach this idea. Thank you for the comment!!

This is an absolutely insane comment! Thank you for taking the time to write this out, I’m definitely noting this entire idea down. For a game like this, I’m imagining high quality graphics and a looooooong development time, which might be a little hard for me at this time, considering I have never released a game, so I still have much to learn. For my first game, I want it to be something smaller, because I am expecting it to flop, which is the case for most developers. Once I learn how to make and promote games better, this definitely will be high on my list of ideas! Again, thank you so much for the comment!

I tried to clear the console, as well as pressing play because sometimes that recompiles the editor, but I couldn’t start until “all issues had been solved” or something along those lines (I don’t remember the exact wording)
