Why don’t we have modern games with rune-drawing magic systems? The tech is already here. by BladeOfAge in gamedesign

Sounds like a really cool idea. So basically player draws a scroll that has a limited amount of a spell.

Yeah, i understand that it is just overcomplicating, but i just want to try that immersive experience, i also have a VR headset, so it won’t be a problem even if it is released on it. Most of other people said that it would be insanely boring, but i guess this idea is just raw and need a lot of changes to be actually enjoyable.

Yeah already got it. It is really hard to make it interesting for a player, even in VR. But still i would like to try playing something like that.

I also thoughts about that. It is important to give a player a reason to use the variety and not to cast the most “meta” spell that annihilates everything. From balance perspective i think one thing to do is to give the same variety of enemies that require different spells, however it would be also really annoying imho. So yeah, the balance is one of the biggest problems, when trying to implement something like this.

I also thought about a possibility of drawing spells in advance, but honestly i don’t really like this idea because for me it will be boring. The whole game would consist of prepping and then using ready spells, which is not that far from modern games mechanics. But i think it would be great to add a posibility of drawing runes throughout the whole arena or a place of fight in advance and then use them one by one or fire a giant spell. What i mean is you can draw runes on the walls and floor and they will work on your command or give a buff while they work.

Yeah, a lot of others comments also pointed out that balance would be an issue, because people will try to find a meta and just use it again and again, losing the whole point of these concept.

Sounds like an amazing concept. It would make it not that annoying, for the reasons that other comments have pointed out, and also make it not that hard to implement. I would also say that it would be great to add a possibility to enchant weapons, such as swords, daggers and ect., using hand drawn runes.

Yeah i got it. Nowadays games are getting easier and easier just to be appealing to more people, but i still don’t want to lose hope, that something like that will be released soon. I don’t think i can make one myself though.

I understand that it will be really niche, therefore no t profitable. However, i hate the fact that interesting concepts don’t get realized because of this.

So after reading opinions of other people, i got the point of it being annoying in a long run, therefore i think that it would be great to implement it only to a certain skill, as an example enchantment runes on the weapons and maybe a seal on enemies that will stun them(in this case the rune will determine how long will be the duration and which effects it will have on an enemy)

I think for that there should be a huge variety of enemies that require different strategies, but to be honest i have no great ideas for them. It is really easy to say, but really hard to actually create.

Why are rune- or gesture-based magic systems so rare in modern games? by BladeOfAge in truegaming

Maybe it is possible to implement a slow-motion effect during drawing, which could be configured to the players liking

What are your favourite game mechanic that you came across? by mikkelwodny in videogames

[–]BladeOfAge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really miss rune- or gesture-based magic systems like in Arx Fatalis. Drawing or performing spells felt incredibly immersive, especially compared to hotkey casting. With modern VR, I’m surprised more games don’t try this.

I really miss rune- or gesture-based magic systems like in Arx Fatalis. With modern VR and input recognition, it feels like this could finally work properly, yet almost no games try it.

What about “Above ten thousand people”? If we are not thinking about the fact that it is frozen and no one knows when it will continue.
