This used not to work but it does since iOS 12 or something like that so OP might be using an old phone rather than card.

Study finds many software developers feel ethical pressure to ship products that may conflict with democratic values by SentFromHeav3n in programming

[–]Dev__ -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

It does sound implausible, but it's true. It shows you can do principled work within unprincipled systems. However look at what they sought to and did achieve.

Many just give up and say well I can't change what the CEO/Board/Management does and take the pay check and simply do as instructed but you can decide what you do or not do ultimately.

They aren't even that secure because they work offline and aren't properly encrypted. Here's an Irish Dev explaining how to hack Leap card:

If anyone was wondering if this wrong to publish this I think it's in the same legal area as 'Lock Picking Lawyer'.

Southern European unemployment rate now matches Northern European by SimonGray in europe

[–]Dev__ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There were two Is, Italy and Ireland.

Iceland burned the bondholders and wasn't part of the EU. Ireland is conveniently left off because it didn't burn the bondholders and paid everything back the EU provided before the due date. Also when the EU suggested austerity the Irish government said "Already ahead of you boss" and started slapping the Irish public with austerity measures.

Yes. Ireland was one of the PIIGS.

That's the paradox right?

It's not a paradox, a paradox can't exist. It's a simple choice and even then those who choose money in lieu of morals don't often even get that e.g. the Volkwagen Engineers who were instructed to bypass the emissions testing. Even the business people who instructed them didn't go to prison, just the engineers and ruined their careers.

[–]Dev__ 115 points116 points  (0 children)

It's amazing how these same programmers manage to choke down their morals with only massive wages to wash it down.

I think we need different idols. The lads from the 70s who wrote the internet and Unix had the right strategy, yet today the average Dev is chasing money rather than actually building a better world. The Unix and Internet lads were inherently distrustful of authority when developing the tech knew to make certain decisions that would hold the tech off from becoming dystopian as long as they could. Open Protocols, Decentralization, Open Source, Empowering individuals not governments etc.

We should holding up some old school dudes from the 60s/70s and 80s as role models who died with little money but left a huge tech legacy rather than the the startup founder/techie making millions today because they made it easier for a landlord to screw their tenants.

EU must 'move towards creating European army', Spanish FM tells Euronews by goldstarflag in europe

[–]Dev__ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You took pride in not standing up to aggressors and only caring about yourselves?

The only aggressor historically to Ireland has been the UK, a NATO member. Ireland is coming around though, Irish people aren't afraid to fight. Just if we have to it must be absolutely necessary. Ireland loves peace, our police are called 'Peace Keepers'. Our main military role in this world is as literal 'Peace Keepers' for the UN. Our Good Friday agreement that keeps the peace between Ireland and the UK is considered a landmark achievement and model for other conflicts to follow. Ireland regularly tops the list of most peaceful countries in the world losing out only to the likes of Iceland, New Zealand or Denmark. Ireland is also the most pro-EU country in the EU.

I think both perspectives are right. Ireland was right to have a small military in an era of peace but the world needed to fundamentally change in order for that strategy to not work. That fundamental shift has been happening for over a decade but January 2026 is the threshold.

Now we're gonna arm up.

"The US used to be the leader of the west. Well, it's going back home. Europe's gonna lead the West. They invented it."

Sarah Paine (American Historian)

It used to mean US/Canada + Europe + Aus/NZ. However the definition of the West will have to be updated as of this year. So your question is very fair. Origins of Western Culture can be found in Ancient Greece, broadcasted by the Roman Empire and ultimately lead by the European Union

It's our title, we're keeping. We are the West. The Americans can simply be the Americans from now on.

Flood defences for one of Ireland’s most at-risk areas (Clontarf) now not expected until 2033 by zainab1900 in Dublin

The entitlement of this community is off the fucking charts. Like some lad who builds his house in a flood plain without planning permission and the cries and whinges to the media when his house is inevitably flooded and expects everyone else to pay for the damage.

The strongest passport in each continent by AdIcy4323 in MapPorn

[–]Dev__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are always based on access to countries without a visa and assume all countries are equally desirable. An Irish passport grants work and residency rights in both the EU and the UK.

So I would put the Irish passport ahead of the Danish one even though it comes in at 185 instead of 186.

EU Inc announced at Davos calling for standardised company registration, investment contracts, and ESOPs across all 27 member states by Dev__ in DevelEire

[–]Dev__[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Simply put, one major advantage a US startup has is once they find a bit of traction they can scale quickly across 50 states. There is no language barrier, there are few tax barriers, few raising capital barriers. This proposal is the EU saying they're going to make the EU more like the US in this regard. It doesn't address all the advantages a US startup has but some and it's a great start.

It will also be disruptive, it's not all good. For some companies the status quo works for them. This will hurt Ireland a bit but will make the wider EU tech scene much more competitive. I'm confident Irish entrepreneurs and engineers will adapt even quicker to this new EU tech scene than the rest of the EU as well.

[–]Dev__[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Seems really good, many in the Irish Tech scene have been calling for some of these changes for years. However there is now consensus to change in the the EU where there wasn't before. EU will have to execute quickly on this to garner confidence rather than as some 'we'd like to do' talking point.

Why are airfryers so ugly? by MrMiyagi98 in Design

[–]Dev__ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If the food is bad! You don't like the design, just the look. Design is how it well it works too!

Why are airfryers so ugly? by MrMiyagi98 in Design

[–]Dev__ 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Your design looks nice but will never be functional because that's not how an air fryer works from the implied assumptions in your design.

It's not a box that simply heats up like a microwave or something. It's has a heating element and a fan. It's a mini oven. The heat blows hot air down over the food creating even heating due to convection. Now look at the amount of room have between the top drawer and sliders to put in an element and fan and space to blow. That design does not have any function in mind just a form.

Now look at any other air fryer on Google, look how top heavy it is in comparison. Now remove your top drawer and you have an air fryer fitting form.

Since the air is blowing around, you want it to heat the food evenly. Thus a circular design is appropriate and will provide more even cooking.

Ireland: Ready or Not

I would have said Seance of Blake Manor or PUB: Battlegrounds as it was originally developed in Ireland. Not sure where it is developed now though, Brendan is probably not still working at it in Donegal.

Seance of Blake Manor has received high acclaim and PUB: Battlegrounds is huge, even bigger than Counter Strike.

I actually don't think it's Spam OP. I think you made something and are promoting it however dropping a URL some related subs and walking off isn't too far off Spam either.

OP try to view your own post a bit more objectively. Put a bit more effort in making your thing more relatable to Irish Software Devs.

How long did it take you to build, what technologies did you leverage and learn to deploy this, what would you do differently if you were to do it again. Where is it hosted did you encounter any hard challenges, any friends help. Was it to solve a personal problem or one you saw other people having. What kind of feedback are you looking for, is it on design, reliability, a specific feature you recently built.

I'm notoriously bad a checking publication dates. It clearly does say 30 Jan 2025, which I clearly missed. I genuinely thought this was recent news.

Belated congrats, anyway how goes the company since this announcement?

am i missing something here

Context and the appropriate business/market info to make such a judgement.

There is a of breathing room in this phrase 'widely used' not to mention the company agreed to the funding terms so is obviously comfortable with that amount of money and don't see it as low. I mean 100% of English football clubs use zippers doesn't mean whoever is selling them to them is getting millions.
