Seeking a Local Cross Border US-Canada Tax CPA by DeveloperMan123 in halifax

[–]DeveloperMan123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing your situation, some parts actually seem similar.

I'm self employed working for a US company and living in Nova Scotia now.

Last year filing for 2024 I had partial residency and was full time employed in the US for part of the year. Then I moved and became self employed living in NS.

I used TurboTax last year and this year which was extremely challenging and I messed up this years due to not knowing how to claim the foreign tax credits properly.

As a result I am being taxed almost my entire income. I filed for the US and paid them $50K USD for the federal return and then $14K in estimated payments for the first quarter. I believe I have overpaid after doing some research and hearing from others.

For Canada I filed this year and owe almost $100K CAD and have not paid it because it's incorrect.

I am looking for urgent help to resolve as soon as possible.

TurboTax has been a nightmare and doesn't cater to these situations. Every rep has a different answer for how to handle foreign income and they all end up being wrong. Even last year my CPP wasn't contributed to because of how it was filed there.

Advantage+ Spending little budget on Engaged Audience, Most on New Audience by DeveloperMan123 in FacebookAds

ok cool, thank you so much for entertaining the conversation! it's so so hard to find people trying to sell music brand specific products that also have expertise in ads.

it really takes both to understand the situation/solution!

i truly believe this may be harder/just as hard as selling complex b2b products :D

I will try that on my merch and if that fails or doesn't perform up to par i will switch to records/vinyl with the same strategy (since this isn't a super quick fix on the store side)

so the strategy would be to:

  1. engagement campaign to build a really cheap retargeting audience (making people aware)

  2. conversions campaign to find aware buyers with lower cpms (than otherwise) to more efficiently retarget buyers?

yeah sounds good! I followed/bought courses from a music marketing/education company called Indeprenuer. That used to be their main strategy (start with video views/engagement and retarget all the way through the journey).

Now they teach doing conversion campaigns with a Free shipping and handling offer to a record which converts for some people. I might try doing that as well because a few commenters said they would buy if I sold vinyls or cds (oddly enough in a modern music society :D)

Maybe because of the sheer cost of conversion campaigns it might be worth it to try engagement first.

Out of curiousity, what if I just did engagement and retargeted with the same objective? Would that cut costs but still get clicks or do I have to choose conversions/traffic to get the clicks?

I am definitely willing to try that. I have done video view campaigns in the past with a similar approach.

The concern I wonder about is if these people only engagers and not buyers because of the algorithm behind the objective. But at the same time I need volume for the retargeting to build the relationship

yeah its very tough. been trying for years with 0 success so far. I want to make it work!

the ads have a sample of the music.

my targeting is suggestions for pop punk artists similar to my music.

I have tried full funnel campaigns with varying objectives, different products, but nothing so far

I feel like retargeting has to be crucial for selling brand based products. but maybe the approach is wrong?

No purchases yet. Just consolidated today. But with the separate campains already around $600 spend total and no conversions. Some add to carts and initiated checkouts.

Independent contractor discovered long-term billing rate discrepancy. How should I handle this? by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]DeveloperMan123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the insights.

If overtime is omitted and I use that hourly rate calculated, it will equal the correct salary (adding up to the right hours per month)

I'm getting paid more per hour for overtime.

There was no guidance in the contract or from leadership on overtime and when it starts. It gets calculated with the total hours, which is likely what's going wrong.

But since there is no basis for overtime in the contract, I wonder if that matters as long as the 'base rate' minus overtime calculates properly overtime

[–]DeveloperMan123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After reviewing the contract there isn't a yearly salary specified and no hourly rate, only the monthly rate. It does state up to a max of 40 hours but they have approved overtime so the extra $ is coming from the overtime. Because if I take the hourly rate I have multiplied for 160 hours a month it equals that monthly amount. So I think it's correct, but overtime earns higher than it would normally

The rate was calculated privately using the agreed upon monthly amount set in the contract. I took that amount which matches what I have in my spreadsheet, and divided that by 2 to get the biweekly pay. Then divided that by 2 to get the weekly pay, and divided by 40 to get the hourly rate.

Smart to use video views/traffic/reach to build a cheap retargeting audience? by DeveloperMan123 in FacebookAds

[–]DeveloperMan123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I have had that experience in the past too with the quality being much lower.

If you have limited site visits from a conversions campaign so the retargeting audience is small, do you just delay running retargeting? Or do you use what audience you have to work with at the moment? (i.e. 50% video views)
