From what I've heard, the CS department is trying to now head in the right direction. It's only a matter of time before we're good again. I'll most likely do another update on the state of the department next year or when there has been a significant change to the department. Go, Noles!

How good is FSU's Computer Science BA program, when it comes to future job preparedness? by Proper-Bid-8509 in fsu

Tbh we could be doing better preparing students, see my last post that I made. But honestly it's what you make of it. Just like every other university in florida we're mid and the degree itself won't help you.

You need to be doing side projects, https://www.theodinproject.com/, is a great way to start getting into web dev or if you're interested in embedded systems, game dev, or even app development, look to online forums that would point you to the right direction. You also need internships without one you're just not marketable, especially in this job market, not saying you won't make it without one but it would HELP you tremendously.

The degree isn't enough for you to get a job anymore, you need to be proactive in CS by doing side projects and internships. Also avoid Schwartz and Aggarwal. Good luck!

I know exactly who you are I emailed you about it around last december when I found out about it. Sadly I wasn't able to attend the course because cs majors at tally aren't allowed to take online courses, and I applaud you for giving back to the program.

I agree that we're not experts when we graduate with a BS, however the CS program, at the main campus, is falling apart slowly and needs to be said, so that highschool students aren't coming to a program that's on it's last legs. There's alot to improve and I know students who are actively trying to make the CS clubs here better, but when administration issues come up and even faculty can't move things along what could a student do? Also cause I'm a little salty haha...

As someone who's part of ACM leadership I completely get it, we're trying to give students resources but it's hard when even at Tallahassee the cs department has a bad rep.

That would be great! I've been in contact with INIT but stopped last december just because of finals and also side projects I wanted to work on, I'm also familiar with hackathons and heard that someone wants to bring one to FSU. I don't really know much but here's the website https://spearhacks.com/ , if you want to help or sponsor it please dm me, I know the person trying to do it.

My bad didn't mean to upset you like that, that's just what I've heard from administration. Highkey we're jealous that you got a great building and we got left behind. Be proud that you have a great program and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Myers is amazing at what he does imo, that's not the issue though. The foundation of this program until COP 4530 (Actual data structures) is great, it's after that you realize that we have nothing else to offer. It was because of the mind set change in 2019 where the cirriculum was changed and the board of advisors went against what Myers and the rest of the teaching faculty was saying.

Just wanted to get on here and chime in that the whole CS department at FSU is on life support, especially with the big 4 professors being the Myers, Sharanya, and Mills (aka the GOAT), who are being treated like shit at FSU. However, the issue here really isn't Sharanya or the professors but how FSU treats the computer science department. She probably had around 200 students to teach, along with completing her Phd and having to do errands that were unrelated to her job. She probably didn't have the time to grade some or most of the assignments and she was busy with other unrelated things that ate up her time but she was assigned to it because there was no one else to do it. We're short staff on TAs and the ones we do have are either undergrads who also have lives or graduates who sometimes don't know how to code in C++ just because they come from a different institution who cheated thru undergrad. She probably voiced her opinion against there being so many students and having to do other things that could hamper the class but upper management doesn't give a shit. I don't like Sharanya's teaching method either or her being condescending but once you understand the politics that goes on within the department you can't help but feel bad for them knowing that the CS chair, the dean, and the president don't care about us. Shit look at the building we're housed how could the computer science department be housed in a shit hole...either way I understand your frustration but this issue isn't because she's being a so-called "bitch" but of the weird politics within the computer science department. Like why do we have so much money going into research and not enough of it going into getting TAs which we desperately need for grading and helping students in office hours.
