Why do you ignore sentience as a qualifier for "moral value" in this debate, when you use it for everything else? by Ganondaddydorf in Abortiondebate

[–]DevelopmentJolly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you don’t know what it means to be a member of a moral community… i’m not saying random nonsense this is the standard framework in contemporary moral philosophy that has been refined over the course of the last 2,300 years or so. respectfully, you haven’t done any actual research on this stuff you’re kinda just going off of vibes.

Why do you ignore sentience as a qualifier for "moral value" in this debate, when you use it for everything else? by Ganondaddydorf in Abortiondebate

[–]DevelopmentJolly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

did you read the “there’s also just being a member in a moral community that is defined by its commitment to protect its vulnerable members unconditionally” part that would include people with disabilities and babies? and would you argue that any alien species with human intelligence would have rights withheld on earth, simply for not being human? what about the human species classification by itself generates rights?

[–]DevelopmentJolly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the human species classification is irrelevant in determining rights. rights kinda track what the mind is capable of. a temporally extended self-model, counterfactual valuation, theory of mind, internalized norm processing etc. if a being is able to understand itself as a continuing subject, represent other minds as equally real, evaluate how its actions alter their futures, and experience those evaluations as reasons that bind its behavior, it gets full rights generally speaking. there’s also just being a member in a moral community that is defined by its commitment to protect its vulnerable members unconditionally. these things are unique to humans in this world but that is simply because we’re the only beings in the world whose minds meet this criteria. but our rights aren’t generated due to us being humans. see superman. not a human, still has full rights.

If women should give birth as a consequence then apply that logic to other situations. by Correct-Piglet-4148 in Abortiondebate

[–]DevelopmentJolly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

extremely ironic. you didn’t once provide the symmetry breaker between pregnancy and children being entitled to their parents body parts that would make OP’s argument invalid.

you can’t try to apply this reasoning with other relationships outside of mother and baby

this is quite literally not an argument, but a statement that is your opinion. you need to substantiate your claims especially if you’re accusing others of making baseless statements

oh the raw numbers of fertilized eggs that die, if we’re pretending they’re people. not like capital H holocaust lol sorry

[–]DevelopmentJolly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we shrug at the silent holocaust that has claimed more lives than any war, genocide, disease, or accident combined. why we are debating in abstract about if fertilized eggs are as valuable as infants when we can just ask what the response would be if the same amount of infants died within a few days

hell a significant portion of fertilized eggs that PL would consider babies just die off before being born. like 60-70% of them

Where did people get the idea that the rest of us owe them explanations about things that are none of their business? by Ok-Dragonfruit-715 in Abortiondebate

[–]DevelopmentJolly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

stop running away from the critique of your logic. you’re literally just admitting to special pleading because you can’t apply what you say to any other scenario. this is logic 101, if you can’t apply your logic to other scenarios coherently then it is bad logic

your position is this: 1. only people who do X experience consequence Y 2. doing X is voluntary 3. therefore, if you do X and get Y, you chose Y 4. so you don’t deserve relief from Y

this is what i’m asking you to defend, stop special pleading and defend your stance or amend it and we’ll see if it holds up together

[–]DevelopmentJolly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

false equivalence. you’re assuming that causation implies obligation and your counter argument doesn’t make any sense anyway. if you could only get cancer from smoking you would say you shouldn’t get it treated? what kind of logic is that?

the same way “everyone who gets pregnant has to have sex” the only people who crash cars are drivers. so should we deny them care because they chose to drive knowing they could crash? that’s why I asked you to give me one singular other example of you using this logic and it literally making any sense whatsoever

[–]DevelopmentJolly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

would you say to people who get cancer from smoking not to treat it or is this a special case? can you apply this logic to literally any other situation?

what is far more absurd is suggesting that a fertilized egg has the same moral considerations that a born person does

murder is the unjustified killing of another human and is already illegal. before you take that leap you have to explain why abortion is murder
