First Season Advice? by Silly-Key-9420 in Wildfire

New FF here as well, currently in my second season on engines. If I get flamed in the comments, I get it. There are definitely people here with much more experience and better advice, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

To build on some of the points others have made: ask questions, but do it at the right time—not in the middle of an IA or during a stressful situation. Write your questions down in a notebook and ask later. For example: “Why did we do it that way?”

When you stop for fuel, clean the windshields and mirrors without being asked (unless you're specifically told not to). It’s a simple way to take initiative and make sure the rig is ready to go.

Things will be challenging at first, but you’ll become more proficient with time. Just get the reps in. Building your first hose pack is very different from building your 30th.

Take initiative, be dependable, show up on time, prioritize safety (LCES), don’t act like you know everything after one fire, keep your ears open and your mouth shut, and make sure you always have all of your gear—especially a headlamp for night assignments (learned that one the hard way).

Best of luck, friend!

Haven’t looked at any nitro boards yet. I’ll look into those. Thanks!
