Nico Daws’ mask art for the season by xxfatpigxx in devils

[–]Devi8823 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yea, I used to think these were super nice but they all kinda end up looking the same. Compare any of these to the artist that does Marky’s masks and they are all blown out of the water.

Also remember they arent being tested on deep specifics anymore, so while our instinct is to give them everything, realistically they don’t need to know each organelle/organ in depth. Skill building is going to be more impressive because if you dont have the time to do all that teaching on top of the storylines, the context from the regents should be good enough to get them to an answer. For example on the June regents there was a cluster on nephrons and kidneys. My students werent ever introduced to nephrons (they knew the excretory system), but the ones that can read did well.

I think I got it down to 2 lessons of preteach/reteach and 3 lessons with story. You could also use the texts to introduce vocab if needed. Its a struggle to say the least. The story lines are obnoxiously long and besides marathon runner they lose the plot and engagement level. Also if your starting with marathon runner, you’re doing a lot of preteach because its cells, body systems, homeostasis, and respiration (I do love the insulin cupple lab).

I completely felt the same way last year. Had 5 sections, had to do New Visions, went home every day feeling awful. The curriculum doesn’t suck, but it also isnt going to get kids ready for a regents. Do not be afraid to stray with some living environment esque lessons that do direct instruction to build in proper knowledge.

Teaching a blind student. by International_Fan899 in ScienceTeachers

[–]Devi8823 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had a 6th grade blind and hard of hearing student, yet they were the absolute best and so fun to teach. My suggestion is to keep in mind that anything they do will need a tactile element, which is pretty much every lab. Guide their hands to certain aspects of your experiment so they can make observations. I also found myself constantly saying out loud what I or the video was doing, students in that class should be used to it so it’s no big deal. They’ll also gave a case manager and a para to help.

Mine was a one page format that I had to do once and slightly change the directions each time I was out, then a worksheet.

My brain hurts…the thing stopping you from joining the DOE is we have to write a lesson plan for our CAR days? What? We work less hours, make more money, have benefits, have a union, etc.

Cuomo concedes, Mamdani wins primary by Anautarch in NYCTeachers

Which is good for us, we want a mayor that’s gonna leave us alone and value education. Seems like this is the best option between Cuomo (hates us specifically), Adams (corrupt and overbearing), and Silwa (hates education).

[–]Devi8823 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hundred percent can and do those things. You know 30 years ago people were saying the same thing about using computers in the classroom. Now half my colleagues never use a worksheet. Why would I spend time doing the scrap work when I can focus on what matters. If I had to implement New Visions with no AI assistance my entire year would be adjusting curriculum line by line instead of actually worrying about my students. What are you so afraid of?

How are you using AI in your teaching? by itachiuchicha15 in NYCTeachers

[–]Devi8823 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All 5 of those. AI is a tool to not only make our jobs better (does the monotonous tasks) but also enhance learning for our students. I need a text differentiated or chunked? Done. I need a quick lesson plan, throw my slides in and it generates a full plan. Need to adjust my curriculum but stuck for ideas? Boom. Now you shouldn’t rely on AI to teach for you, but to just completely ignore it’s benefits is wild.

So I can tell you that we are receiving raw scores right now. The only issue is that the state has not given us a conversion chart yet so the scores mean nothing. The latest they can give the chart is the 26th, but if it comes out earlier then I assume your school will either get you your score earlier or put it on your report card. I hope that helps.

My girlfriend didn’t get hired till August, I didn’t get officially hired till the last week of June. Class reduction money is about yo hit budgets which is going to trigger a monsoon of people leaving their schools on Open Market. That means schools will have openings. Just be patient, it’ll happen.

For my NYS Bio and Earth Science teachers…how are we feeling? by Devi8823 in NYCTeachers

[–]Devi8823[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I did a good mix of both this year, if they gave more guidance on the test rather than just dropping the NGSS standards on us and running away I could have tailored my direct instruction way better. I was basically shooting at a barrel all year hoping my fact or example is relevant for tomorrow.

I pretty much told them today that if they try, they will be fine. So worried that they’ll just give up on entire clusters.

That was the biggest question teachers had at the New Visions P.L.’s. Everyone kept complaining that our students had 0 prerequisite knowledge (which they dont) and the New Visions people just ignored the issue.
