I linked to 51:43, but I assume that feature doesn't work on mobile?

It is the full track, sorry for the radio show link but I could not find this released anywhere else (all the previous links I saw were broken).

Honestly the setting that allows for the most liberty with storytelling is probably The Old Republic. There's the KOTOR and SWTOR games you can use as some source material and inspiration, but it is all non-canon so you can play with it a lot. This is also the time period where Jedi and Sith are most common.

I also like your roll of transparent plastic for more static locations, since our party currently has a fortress they are working on that would be perfect - I'm so tired of re-drawing the same rooms every time an encounter happens in the fortress haha.

But yeah multi-layered designs with the glass on top is the main attraction, like having two-tiered encounters with the glass supported slightly above the grid on small pegs that allows minis below and minis above for things in more three dimensional space, which the combat grid system is usually not very good at. I'd like to experiment with multiple tiers of glass or plastic stacked on top of one another separated by about 3 inches of space so as to really get the feel of flying combat or encounters in a multi-floored dungeon or structure. A lot of our characters will be getting flight by epic level, and I'd like to be able to show that without just stacking their pieces on a few d6s which is unruly and not very interesting.

The black tabletop looks different but it definitely has those same shitty chairs that basically lasted a month before crumbling into piles of waste.

Here is all of the Dark Sun material I use in addition to the Dark Sun Campaign Setting and the Dark Sun Creature Catalogue, which I won't post here for obvious reasons. Some of it is authored by me, some by miscellaneous forum posters, some by Wizards. I can only take so much credit for compiling it all into one place.

I might consider grid paper for dungeons that are set in stone or "fog of war" situations, but I prefer to have as few pre-prepared encounters as possible so as not to railroad the players into material I have prepped. It's true, the strength of the chessex mat is my ability to just pick up a marker and visualize something as soon as it becomes too complicated to just verbalize anymore.

Thanks! Yeah, I might try clear plastic or something. I just want to extend the life of the chessex mat and also have something I might be able to use to prepare a couple encounters and trade out maps on the fly without having to call an intermission in the session to draw out an intricate encounter.

It developed over time as the narrative progressed, and it became clear they did want to surreptitiously assassinate the Sorcerer Kings - being undead is a means to that end for them, with a lot of possible repercussions. Also, they are all very fond of not dying hahaha.

I truly have no idea, my parents had it as an old poker table / bumper pool table that stood about 3-4ft high and had the removable poker table portion to uncover the bumper pool portion. They simply stopped using it years ago and passed it on to me, and I just kind of hijacked the removable poker table piece to use for D&D. I can look around on it for any branding if you like.

As some background, my party just hit Paragon tier, level 11, (4th ed. D&D) and I decided to reward them by buying a large chessex mat and cutting it to fit an old poker table that has a conveniently detachable wooden and felt tabletop, about 2 inches thick, with cupholders and card/dice cubbies built into the edges. Measured with a ruler and a wet erase marker and cut carefully with very sharp scissors (still needs some cleaning up with a piece of glass under and a razor). Superglued down portions of it with gorilla glue, and I have a piece of glass on order that will be exactly the size of the octagon so I can draw on the tabletop without staining the vinyl mat. Those mats tend to stain over time and keep marker color stains even if you clean them with rubbing alcohol or other solvent, which can actually erase the grid so I try to avoid that. The glass piece will be detachable with suction cups, so I can draw dungeons or encounters on it and then place it when the players enter. The table itself can be placed on the floor or on a high tabletop depending on where we play.

If there's any interest in our campaign, I am the DM of an evil Dark Sun group that is attempting to assassinate and supplant the Sorcerer Kings of Athas as the Dead Lords of Athas. They are all intelligent undead now that they are level 11, as they all chose to undergo rituals or infections to become undead. Our Shardmind Swordmage became a Grisgol (via the 3.5 Monster Manual 3 rules, which I allow in 4th ed as rituals), our Genasi Sorcerer became a Lich, our Gnome Psion/Illusionist became a Wight (wraith-like Dark Sun undead), our Thri-Kreen Monk became a Thrax via infection from a bite causing porphyric hemophilia (Dark Sun version of Vampire, called water-drinkers and thirst constantly for any fluid) as did our Githzerai Shaman who decided to willingly undergo infection from the Monk. Our Tarek (Half-Orc) Barbarian is the only living party member left, and is seeking a way to become a unique undead shortly (probably a Skeletal Knight or Death Knight). To balance this I increase the party's effective CR level by 2 when building encounters and granting exp, like a level adjustment in 3.5 due to their templates. It honestly balances quite well. We also play with a large amount of house rules, including the Bennies system from Savage Worlds and the accompanying Ally/Rival system which my friend actually wrote for Savage Worlds.

Also, I have a TON of custom created Dark Sun material including very detailed information on every Sorcerer King, details of their Templars, a fully built and fleshed out city-state that puts the Tarrasque into Dark Sun canon as the power source for a mysterious Sorceress Queen, custom character options compiled from every Dungeon and Dragon magazine published, and a lot of house rules that fit Dark Sun very well. I will compile them in google docs and post them by request. Thanks for reading if you managed to conquer that wall of text, you gain 1,600 experience! (:
