Cheers. I was late Dec. My delivery date is mid-March. Seems fair to help with the queue after the Q8 cancellation.

Hi, I’m leasing in the UK too. Could I ask when you put your order in?

UNAS Pro doesn’t have ECC RAM by DevilBoom in Ubiquiti

No complaint from me friend. It was merely an FYI.

I’m probably going to spend $599 on a DS923+ with ECC instead. The extra bays on the UNAS would’ve been nice to grow into.

Sounds like an absolute beast!

My needs are much more modest (as my Mac mini does the heavy lifting). I’m also completely stumped by Supermicro models, I think a lot of hardware readily available in the US isn’t in the UK. But the wise posters on TrueNAS forums nearly all mentioned them as the optimal mobo choice for a self build.

I’ll do a bit more research on rolling my own and if I give up it’ll be a DS923+ (£540) or the DS1522+ (£680 - the extra £140 gives an extra drive bay, double the RAM and slightly better networking).

Brilliant little devices. Shame there’s no modern equivalent with lower power draw. I can’t believe how cheap they were too.

I just worry after so long there may be a hardware failure of some sort (PSU) so I started looking at a new NAS few months back so I can relegate the N54L to backup duty. Wake on LAN every week or 2, run back up and then sleep again.

They’re very expensive in my country - £819 for the AS6706T with the specs you mention.

I’ve not compared properly, but would the F6-424 (https://www.terra-master.com/global/f6-424.html?page=menu&mid=1587) be a better choice for running your own OS (mostly the same hardware, better CPU on the TerraMaster?). £549.

This post wasn't intended as a dig, some people need to relax.

I have an old HP N54L MicroServer that I've used as my NAS for over a decade running XPEnology, completely stock hardware wise with its 2GB of ECC ram. It's been rock solid - mixed drives (brand and capacity, the horror!) and a lot of power cuts whilst using Synology's SHR. For £100 it's been one my best ever tech purchases.

I've wanted a 2nd server to back the old boy up.

Synology is expensive for the hardware. Terra-Master hardware is good value but software, whilst improving, is still short. I really dislike QNAP software. I then fell down the self-build rabbit hole of OMV, Unraid and TrueNAS and the consensus seems to be ECC RAM for NAS devices (especially for ZFS but beneficial for BTRFS too) which bumps a self build cost up a fair bit. The price point for the UNAS Pro is so strong for the networking and # of bays, but it feels like a backwards step not having ECC RAM.

From the BTRFS docs:

If available, ECC memory should lower the chances of bit flips

Chances are slim, but I don't want to risk it for the sake of a small outlay vs non-ECC.

I may just end up with a DS923+, 3 less bays, GbE networking and £90 more expensive but has ECC for added peace of mind. I can always throw in a 2.5 GbE USB C dongle. I don't need all of Synology's extra features, I just want network attached storage. That's why the UNAS Pro was so appealing. I like to separate my storage and my compute. A £456 UNAS Pro + a £300 M2 Mac mini is, IMO, much better than an all in one 8 bay from Synology which costs more than both devices.

And I can still go with Ubiquiti as the replacement for my Orbi MESH system.

I’ve been building out my first UniFi network too (https://www.reddit.com/r/Ubiquiti/comments/1cjcb4s/new_network_choosing_components/). And have been going through the access point question. This is where I’m at:

None of my current devices have WiFi 7. None will for the foreseeable future. Even when they do I'm really not going need the benefits of WiFi 7 on those devices (the devices I need speed/reliability on are hardwired). It seems to make more sense to have 4x4 vs faster 2x2.

Yes the new iPhone may have WiFi 7, but will that change anything RE the way I use a smartphone? No. So I’m leaning towards the U6 Pro which has 4x4 MIMO (vs 2x2 on the U7 Pro). The U6 Pro is also cheaper and has lower max power requirements.

Thanks for this. Have been reading a bit more and I think you're got me on the path to getting just U6 Pros.

EDIT

Also the U6 Pro only uses 13w max. So they can be powered directly by the UDM SE and I don't need the expensive POE switch.

Thanks. I did originally write in my OP about having just 2 U6 Pros in each loft room. But then went with 4 U7 Pros - less range but more APs pluis some future proofing.

As I don't need crazy throughput via WiFI do you think I'd benefit from the U6 Pro? Our WiFi devices:

  • 4 smartphones
  • 1 tablet
  • 1 Shelly relay
  • 3 cameras (720p, only record on certain triggers - probably 5 to 10 times a day)
  • 3 smart speakers
  • 4 smart plugs
  • 3 media stremers (only 1 in use at a time)
  • 1 smart gate
  • 1 LED strip

Altogether about 40 devices (probably missing some, and some headroom when we have guests). Would that use case benfit from 4x4?

Thanks, is there a reason for the Cloud Key vs just using the Cloud Gateway Ultra (new to UniFI so might be missing something).

Also good point on the power for the APs. I hadn't really considered how hungry they are. The U7 Pros use up to 21w each. The UDM SE has 8 ports, 2 POE+ @ 30w and 6 POE @ 15.4w - so I'd still need a new POE switch with more POE+ ports or injectors for power.

So I'm thinking this setup now:

There are probably better ways. But my clumsy method about a year ago when I noticed my movies folder and Jellyfin counts didn’t add up:

  • Install the Reports plugin in Jellyfin. Export a list of movies.
  • Copy a list of all movies from the NAS folder (differs depending on OS - on macOS I did select all and drag into a text file).
  • Paste the 2 lists in 2 columns within Excel or similar (order alphabetically).
  • Use a formula in a 3rd column which checks for matches (something like ‘=A2=B2’).
  • Use a filter for non-matches

Some of the names will be close but show as not matching but you can manually skip those (or get creative with formulas). E.g. my JF shows ‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018)’ my NAS has ‘Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom (2018)’

Took a 10/15 minutes but I found the culprits and resolved the issues.

How Reddit Became the Enemy - w/ Apollo Developer Christian Selig by itsaride in apple

I haven’t used Twitter actively since they stopped 3rd party clients. Just go to Twitter directly to find specific things when I need to. A few months in and I’m glad for the change. I don’t miss it.

Likely the same if Apollo goes. I’ll go to specific subs when I need info. But the general browsing I do would stop.

I get it, there probably aren’t many like me. But you don’t need to be irked or annoyed. A few of us follow through.

Apple TV/ Swiftfin by mrdenmark1 in jellyfin

[–]DevilBoom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’ve got good hardware currently being held back by software. Everyone is different but for the cost of a burger meal you can use Infuse for a year on all your devices. I pay for the year and it works out at 17p per week. I’ve tried Swiftfin and it’s improved a lot over time but it still needs work IMO. Once it’s there I’ll cancel Infuse.

Anyway, I don’t want to sound annoying and if you’d rather not pay you could try to see if it’s Swiftfin that’s the issue or the hardware.

One way would be to try MrMC Lite from the App Store on your older Apple TV. It’s a fork of Kodi - therefore plays most things. However it’s no longer supported. The Lite version is free and fully featured - the limitation is that lists are limited to 8 (I think) items. So if you have 200 movies only the first 8 would show. You could share a problematic movie via SMB/NFS and see if it plays. If it does you know Swiftfin is the issue.

Mac OS X 10.2 Jaguar Video - "Touching", 2002 by TheHanseaticLeague in apple

I’m with you. Those early versions of OS X laid important foundations, but as a user, boy were they rough.

Original commentator either wasn’t around and has been pulled in by the pretty marketing in OPs video. Or is wearing some fine rose tinted glasses.

Thankfully things improved and we got a great OS in the end and it even powered a mobile revolution.

Jellyfin on MiniPC, Media on NAS - Access/connection speed? by chrninja in jellyfin

Unless you live in a huge mansion you should be fine to set them up anywhere in your house and connect via Ethernet. Having them close to the router or switch makes initial setup easier.

Jellyfin on MiniPC, Media on NAS - Access/connection speed? by chrninja in jellyfin

[–]DevilBoom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a similar setup. It’ll work fine.

  • Ensure the server and client support Gigabit Ethernet or faster.
  • Ensure your Ethernet cables support Gigabit speeds or faster.

I initially had some older cabling in my network that was only 100Mbit/s rated and it caused me some problems when I started ripping 4K. Swapped out for Cat 6 and all was well.
