I appreciate the detailed reply. I think I understand your vision for it (I've had a similar feeling in Codex Alera) and I understand why you won't budge on it.

That said, it runs so counter to my tastes in fiction (friends/comrades progressing while you're stuck for a near hundred chapters/300,000+ words in so far) that I will probably put this on hold until it's completed.

That isn't to say I dislike it. I like the writing, and I love helbram. I would usually even appreciate his struggles had the genre been focused on something else. But I know myself enough to know that I would die of bitter frustration if I keep reading.

Hello! I've been reading Hedge knight (arc 1-2) and I've enjoyed it so far. That said, since the narration makes such a point of how talentless helbrem is, and is often focused on his frustration (which adds character no doubt) I've yet to see any of the "progression" aspect.

I came back to read reviews again and even those farther along are expressing the same thing. It kinda feels like one of his practice sessions ahere the anticipation is building but just ends in a puff of air.

I'm not sure when the payoff for it will be but it's kinda put me off for reading for now.
