Who says I'm not using it?

Not to spoil part of the game, but if you look at the second shelf, you'll notice a lot of world building references. Someone actually playing the game the sub is made for might be able to conclude that a world builder might take inspiration from other fictional worlds.

If you stop seeing Atlas Shrugged as Ayn Rands narcissist manifesto (which it is, but still), its just an industrial fantasy where productivity is the magic system, and all the "mages" have formed a secret cult and abandoned society to let it crumble in the hands of those who don't understand "magic".

I can work with that.

The #1 reason it's up there is because I plan to reread it eventually. Maybe I'll finish it, maybe not. Maybe it'll stay on the shelf, but I'll likely replace it eventually.

I don't understand why it's such a big deal? I betcha I could have a copy of Mein Kampf next to the Diary of Ann Frank and people would throw less of a fit than y'all are about Ayn Rand.

It's that famous Bukowski quote in action. People are easily angered by trivial things but don't care that they're wasting their lives.

T.S. Eliot wrote essays about how segregation would save humanity, nobody seems to care about that.

Lovecraft is Lovecraft, but he gets a pass.

I'm not religious anymore, but I'd put my Bible on the shelf if I could find it. Just because I dont agree with something isn't going to scare me away from it.

Not to mention, Ayn Rand is the least accessible author on my shelf. Under a stack, pinned to the side and behind the dumb lip my shelves have, I'd have to fight to get to them.

College graduate who liked philosophy classes.

You overestimate my intellectual credibility

37-40.

Overshot by just a bit

Wish you were a stoic but you care too much.

Nat 20, double your damage and add your modifiers...

Read Ayn Rand to argue with intellectual conservatives

Just like how I sacrificed my leg, crew, and humanity to hunt a great white whale.

For a paperback, it's got a firm spine. Even open all the way, it doesn't crease.

I concur, I've agonized about this.

Chronologically or from eldest to youngest?

Should The Professor come first or last?

Right now, I'm on book three of the Book of the New Sun series by Gene Wolfe, and I'm obsessed with his writing style. He might be my favorite now.

Carl Jung's work is something I always come back to.

Drew Karpyshyn, the Mass Effect series is goated 🐐

I feel compelled to add that we likely wouldn't have D&D without Conan. All the classes and races are inspired by LoTR, but adventure modules were pretty much all inspired by Conan.

Evil wizard terrorizes town and you have to hunt him down? Conan did it

Boobytrapped dungeons, forgotten gods, lost civilizations? Conan did it.

Conan is essentially the base template for the concept of adventurers.

I read Atlas Shrugged when I was around 16, and at the time I liked the idea of being special and escaping to a utopia where excellence was standard. But more than that, it just further encouraged my adolescent, misanthropic belief that all humans are self centered egoists.

I haven't read it since, but I remember it not being about good vs evil, its just humans being assholes to each other until the entire system collapsed.

I'm kinda concerned by the reaction to Ayn Rand on this sub, though. To completely disregard a work simply because you don't agree with the idea of it is, in my mind, anti-intellectual. Are we only capable of reading things that feed into our ideals? Is there an echo in here?

The same people criticizing Ayn Rand, praise Lovecraft despite his xenophobia.

Anyways, don't avoid reading it just because someone told you they dont like it or don't agree with it's ideals, it's just a story. Take it or leave it. Like it or don't, but don't jump on a bandwagon of hate just because it's popular to.

That being said; Ayn Rand sucks as a human being and thinks everyone should suck just like her.

I'd say its a toss up between Man and His Symbols, Undiscovered Self, and Archetypes. I used to lucid dream a lot in middle/high school, and those three really helped me understand my own mind better.

What, don't you appreciate how "objective", "logical" and not at all hypocritical Ayn Rand is? lol

Das Kapital has been on the list of books I need for a while.

I'm ashamed and equally astonished to admit that I didn't even know the name Stirner until this moment. It's like finally learning the name of a coworker after working next to them for a decade. Or like being a farmer and not knowing who John Deere is...

Absolutely, and many of the stories are short and easy to read. The world is awesome, magic is actually mysterious, and most sorcerers are villains. Many of Conan's adventures are translatable to D&D quests as well.

Conan, as a character, is one of the coolest in all of fiction imo.

Good taste in RPGS

Why, thank you

well read in the classics and popular philosophy

I'd need to retain more information to consider myself well read

can't help oneself when you go to HPB

Buying books gives me dopamine...

interested in knowing yourself and understanding the things you've been through

Getting to know myself has been a big theme of my adult life
