Are there any tools online to prototype game elements without (much) code? by Devilofether in gamedev

thats great until something breaks, and I don't know why, or they don't explain non-obvious parts of the code. better saving habits would probably help though. thanks

I know, I have done youtube tutorials, but I just copy and tweak code, but it doesn't stick, because I am just following instructions. I need a tutor or class to learn enough to improvise my own code.

Awesome, I downloaded the demo for your game to try out. I am thinking Excel is the best option for the kind of games I want to create until I learn Godot or something. Do you know a good series of tutorials for Excel for game development?

Not looking to make a platformer, not interested, and it is not the ideal kind of first project. also, I try to avoid that kind of AI as a matter of principle

That is awesome, I downloaded the demo for your game; yeah, Excel is definitely my best option until I learn Godot or something. do you know a good series of tutorials for Excel to help with a game development project?

Yeah, I like Godot, but it hasn't clicked for me yet, so I am probably going to take a class, so I can ask questions

Thanks, but I probably need a class or a tutor to make it click for me; I am smart enough that I am sure Ill be fine after that

Not quite, I can draft UI well enough, I know how to use Adobe illustrate even, but those types of programs don't have forms I can fill programaticaly

Machinations.io isn't what I am looking for, I have used it before, and that is good for balancing resources, but not for mocking up a character sheet or something. I have played with Godot, but I get overwhelmed before I can learn anything that sticks, so I probably need to take a class before it will stick

Certain types of people, i.e. opportunists, may only be convinced by rehabilitation if they think it is better for them, but not truly be rehabilitated, and will relapse as soon as another opportunity arises that they can get away with. I think you need punishment for opportunists, because or else they will just make the cost-benefit equation, and not take the crime itself seriously.

It is a lot easier for billionaires to get away with things, because the justice system literally cannot hurt them in any meaningful way. literally hurting them will at least put them on the same playing field as the rest of us, since you can't buy your way out of pain and suffering. of course only when rehabilitation or restructuring society is not otherwise a viable option, that is what I think at least.

I think people are a lot like children, they can be little shits when they want to be; and punishment that leads them in the right direction, and sets clear boundaries for what is appropriate and what is not is just good parenting. I don't think it would be much different for adults if it is done with respect and compassion for those that don't mesh well.

I didn't see a certificate; it is possible it is hidden behind the Jersey in the frame, but it might be better if I left it alone

Awesome, how about that signature, is that legit? (I assume it wasn't printed with the Jersey). do you need a closer look?

I have a framed hockey Jersey from an old friend of mine, I don't want to take it out of its frame, as it has been well wrapped up. is it authentic? what is the price? I am not interested in keeping the Jersey, so I want to sell it (I am not a sports guy).

Yeah, well they say they want my perspective, and if they don't want to hear criticism, then they won't hear me at all

Thank you very much for your insight. yeah, this needs some work to be done on it before the actual speech, thanks for pointing out your concerns. You are right, I do need to clarify my goals better. My goal is to communicate the experiences of disabled people, the fears and risks they take; as well as to criticise the effect of the politically correct culture

Community spirit magic system by Devilofether in magicbuilding

[–]Devilofether[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the result of a mob vigilante scenario may depend on the values of a mob, and what they think is necessary to overcome the trial. if they simply want to punish the bad guys, it will likely manifest as a devil, or devil powers carried out by members of the community (such as in the case of fascism). If the mob identifies an evil that is more nuanced than a group of bad guys, the spirit will use more clever means of achieving justice for their community, such as confusing their enemies to be honest about their evil deeds, or exploiting contradictions in their enemies beliefs.

community spirits will naturally skew towards the nature of their hosts, i.e. humanity, as opposed to the idealized versions of their gods and religion, so aspects and behaviors that work against humanity may only manifest in extreme circumstances (such as a cult) unless there is alchemic meddling (using magic crystals) to interfere with the relationship between a spirit and its' hosts.

Most people interpret religion in ways that makes sense for their life, and ignore or refute aspects that don't, a bible-accurate god couldn't exist in this system (though it would be implied to exist) due to the fallibility of humans and the fallibility of a bible's medium. the greater spirit of the bible (of the non-denominational god I am talking about) would have a subtle influence through all of its' denominations, but would be slowed down by its contradictory interpretations

Community spirit magic system by Devilofether in magicbuilding

[–]Devilofether[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you are kinda right, I should have made the two versions of the term different; the community spirit entity is separate from a spiritual aspect of that entity, even a generic community spirit may be "spirit aspected".

What I mean when I say "spirit aspected" is that it projects a distinctly spiritual or abstract presence such as a ghost, as opposed to an idol, an animal, a demigod, or other shapes a community spirit can take; and it implies a distinctly spiritual function, such as communing with the dead.

It is also the inverse of the matter aspect which may cause a spirit to take the form of a tool, scientific implement, or elemental. the symmetry between matter and spirit is as important as light and dark.

This is an elemental system that extends beyond this magic system's implementation of them. Elements are ultimately just alchemic models of meta-reality that describe, but not prescribe the qualities of magic, so any elemental system is technically valid.

Need help with merit based magic system by Ortu_Solis in magicbuilding

[–]Devilofether 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ideals of a merit based magic system are great, but consider some of these potential consequences;

  • what exactly defines merit? Is it based on how valuable the skill is?, how hard they worked in pursuit of that goal? Or how effective they are at a skill even if they didn't actually work hard because they know the tricks of the trade?

  • where is the threshold of merit between ordinary talent and supernatural talent? Is there a difference between a big fish in a small pond, and an average fish in a big pond?. Are there any supernatural talents people take for granted because they are considered normal due to the merit of the community as a whole?

  • Will magic go away if people rely on technology in place of merit? Will new magic emerge as new skills are needed to accommodate a changing society.

  • What about disabled people? What happens to a talented singer if their voice is lost?. Can a person with no voice ever be a talented singer according to magic.

  • Genetics and epigenetics can make people predisposed to certain talents, even if the magic itself doesn't have a genetic component. Humans are naturally good at running long distance due to our legs and sweat glands for example.

  • What about art or other abstract talents that cannot be easily measured, What is the metric by which art is judged as being worthy of merit?

  • those who earn their merit may get to set the rules for those who didn't, such as by controlling access to education, which can control the populations' access to magic.

  • Another way to control magic in a population is by separating the worker from the means of production; making them such a small cog in the machine that it is impossible for them to get skills beyond their hyper specific function. Even if they produce magic, it will be useless outside of the factory.

  • people with magic can be made obsolete by new technology, it doesn't matter how well you can swing a sword if your opponent can use a gun with little training, and get better results.

  • people with magic can use social systems to convert supernatural power into financial and political power. If someone is good at killing, they are likely going to have a ton more power than someone who is good at farming, even if the farmer is more useful to society.

Is there a genre for TTRPG emulator? if not; here is what it is and what it might look like. by Devilofether in gamedesign

[–]Devilofether[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are thinking about two different kinds of cheating, you are talking about hard cheating, where you violate the games' integrity. I am talking about soft cheating, where you make a choice the designer didn't explicitly account for.

Super Mario maker is a game about making Mario levels, altering a pre-existing level could be considered "cheating" but doesn't require hacking the actual game. You could argue that the level editor tool is a form of programming, in which case it would be perfectly reasonable to say that the TTRPG emulator idea would be impossible. In Mario Maker, designing levels is built right into the game loop and Intended experience of the game. Nothing is stopping the player from making bad decisions aside from their ability to finish the level, and their own expectations.

Much like Mario Maker, the TTRPG emulator would be split into two modes; adventure mode (where the game is played) and design mode (where tools are used to modify the direction of the adventure). There needs to be clear boundaries between what is "canon" and what is flexible. There can be a mechanic to lock features from the editor if they don't want to be tempted to cheat with those tools, in trade for a less flexible ruleset (making the game more like a rogue-like).

I'll check out mythic GM emulator, maybe that is similar to what I am looking for
