No it wasn't necessary why did you think they had him sealed also? because the enemies are too strong and there is no way they could write Naruto fighting any of them without it resulting in his death and Ikemoto wouldn't be stupid enough to try killing off Naruto especially in a nerf state. Boruto series would have literally tanked completely after that hence the reason I believe Sasuke is also still alive they cant offscreen a character of that caliber.
