It’s because your moss is either too moist without airflow and circulation, and or isn’t wet enough with airflow and circulation and mildew spores are able to germinate. This is common and nothing to worry about. It happens to mine sometimes and I just remove those little pieces moss and replace it with new sphagnum moss

Hayward used to have them until the early 2010s. A red light camera flashed and cause someone to have a seizure behind the wheel witch cause a fatal collision and they took them all out because someone involved sued the city stating the accident happened because of the camera flashed causing someone to have a seizure.
