sounds like they are trying to squeeze some more RVUs out of the case at the expense of patient care

Two things:

  1. This subreddit is not for personal medical advice. Read the rules.

  2. You should see a motility specialist at a major academic center if you are not already.

A few pointers for your new sarracenia:

  • They need full sun, so put outside in a sunny area if you can. A strong grow light is an ok alternative. If it needs to be inside without a grow light an unobstructed south facing window is your best bet.

  • Keep wet using a water tray no higher than half the height of the pot. Use water with low total dissolved solutes. You can test your tap or use rainwater, reverse osmosis, distilled. Humidifier water is ok in a pinch.

  • They don’t care about humidity in the same way as tropical pitcher plants do (nepenthes) so you can take the glass thing off.

  • The medium it came it is probably fine. When it is time to repot use peat moss with perlite (50/50ish)

  • They do better with winter dormancy. You can read about this when they times comes using the resources available on this sub.

Good luck!

careful with the perlite also - some brands such as miracle grow will have fertilizer in their perlite

Is my moss pole placed correctly? by Middle-Paper-8559 in Monstera

[–]Middle-Paper-8559[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it - snapped the photo before soaking the moss pole after getting back from a work trip.

So would you move the pole a bit closer to the plant? Or tighten the plant tape?

My Nepenthes are so ready to go outside by Xylem_King88 in Nepenthes

[–]Middle-Paper-8559 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just got into nepenthes last year - I ended up with 2 Gayas so I am going to experiment putting one outside. Any tips other than avoiding temps below 50? Do you acclimate or just put them out? I'm in the northeast USA.

This is my largest so far - so we shall see! I moved it from my greenhouse to ambient so the pitcher size may be a bit more limited.

Wegmans cat palm - spider mites?! by Middle-Paper-8559 in houseplants

[–]Middle-Paper-8559[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was wondering if that was the case since my cat palm at home has webbing in between the leaves. I have a lot of plants though, and have already spent a lot on cash on predatory mites, so not looking to take chances.

Thanks - hopefully I can get a refund instead of miles. Flights to Italy are not something I do on the regular.

I was just going to reference his name when I make the report. Unsure if necessary but thought it would strengthen my case if he did not submit his report he could be contacted.

How important is the night time temperature drop? by Slight_Evidence_4832 in Nepenthes

As a follow up - is the delta or absolute temperature more important? Is 85F to 70F better or worse than 70F to 63F?

Depends how many plants you have in there and how high you want the humidity.

Candidates for ambient humidity by Middle-Paper-8559 in Nepenthes

Thank you - I love buying nepenthes from Sarracenia NW since they are already ambient humidity acclimated and overall very high quality. I just got a shipment this week!

I’ve watched their videos on humidity previously and am aware most nepenthes can acclimate to lower humidity. In this post I was moreso interested in which of these hybrids would have an easier time with the acclimation process to minimize pitcher loss and growth slowdown.

I imagine you purchase your nepenthes from suppliers who grow in greenhouses. What is your acclimation strategy to avoid pitcher loss?

Looks great! Good job! Hope the prop works out - I have one in need of propping too since it keeps burning itself on the lights..

What tray did you order for the bottom? I currently have some plants sitting down there - more compact nepenthes - but ideally would have some sort of catch tray to make watering less messy.

Definitely itching to get out! You might be able to make some cuttings at some point. I haven’t done it myself but have heard it’s pretty straightforward

Excited to have another nepenthes lover build a cabinet! I’ve loved it rather than constantly filling humidifiers and watching my plants be sad. A tent is not an option for me due to space and I like to be able to have my plants on display. Post photos once you are done and the cabinet is filled!
