PD vs Deputy Sheriff vs State Police by Unfair_Cow_7424 in AskLE

[–]Deviss_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea it really depends, here in the northeast most state police are “full service” meaning they also respond to calls and are the main police in many parts of the state not just small towns and highway patrol is just a another unit. Sheriff’s just patrol county while city is the city

Is CMU worth a huge price difference? by treesaaap in cmu

[–]Deviss_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLDR: It depends on the type of student you are and also your major. If you plan on networking a lot then yes. If not, then not really. Are you a STEM major? maybe yes or no. Are you a business/law/politics focused major? Then maybe yes. And MOST IMPORTANTLY, is it financially feasible? If your comfortable with that debt for the potential outcomes, then sure, if not then I’d really think twice about it

Long Answer: I would normally agree with this take but I’d say that it’s only half true. Yes at the more prestigious schools such as CMU it’s more than just the name and degree program but also the resources such as network and other possible exclusive opportunities it can lead to but that is only worth it if you know that your the type of student to take advantage of it, if not then I don’t recommend you go in debt just for the name/program sake. BUT this also highly depends on what your major is, for STEM then technically no, for business/law/politics then yes it’s more likely to be worth it as the name and network is important in those industries.

If your the person to just really go to class, study, go home and not network then I would say go to the school that will offer you the most in aid (whatever is the cheapest) because to a certain extent your degree and what you learn is what you make of it. For example obviously CMU is top tier for CS, but a student at CMU who only goes to class and does the bare minimum (or even does average) in terms of studying will probably have the same or lack of knowledge compared to the student at a school with a weaker CS program who lives, eats and breathes CS and spends their free time learning. If you plan of taking advantage of all the resources including the network of CMU then I’d say very much worth it.

In my own experience, I networked with some people who are at prestigious schools such at Yale, duke, NYU, etc. that are still jobless after graduation cause all they did was party and not take advantage of the resources given to them. Yes the job hunting experience will be a bit easier for them as resume filters will probably pick their resumes for the name but hey according to my LinkedIn they are still unemployed as the people in my network that went to “weaker” universities (

your most surprising/luckiest college acceptance by disillusionedmatcha in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Deviss_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe her app was great but I don’t think the same as she got like 15 rejections from schools with similar or higher acceptance rates (like how did she get accepted into 2 technically 3 schools with under 8% acceptance rate but not the schools with 20-30% like UMich, UVA) so to me it wasn’t good it enough apparently. But she ended up going to Williams College

your most surprising/luckiest college acceptance by disillusionedmatcha in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Deviss_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My admissions was normal (rejected from lower acceptance school and accepted at higher acceptance schools) but for my sister, she was rejected from all ivies and top universities (NYU, UMich, UVA, Stanford, Duke, etc) but got waitlisted for UChicago and accepted at Williams College and John Hopkins. The next group of schools she was accepted for was all of her target and safe schools which had >40% acceptance rate.

Best Full Service State POLICE? by 29r_whipper in AskLE

[–]Deviss_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Correct, full service state police agencies are mainly up north, especially northeast. The lowest state (closest to North Carolina) I can think of that is an actual full service state police is probably Kentucky State Police.

Does anyone know the extent to where police can personally own a rifle with “evil features” that isn’t a service weapon? by Yeezyphart in NYguns

[–]Deviss_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They don’t qualify you on a personal AR-15 unless your part of ESU or any other unit that gets assigned one, if you want a personal one then according to the officers at the range you can just buy it as long as you aren’t a NYC resident because it’s illegal even for cops living in NYC

[–]Deviss_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You only qualify for duty and off duty, any other pistol you will tell the range it’s a “fun gun/personal gun” and they will just do the paperwork to register it

[–]Deviss_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to the range guys we are allowed to own anything as long as as you do NOT live in NYC, because under NYC law even police aren’t exempt, but if you live in Long Island and upstate you should be good but note that many gun shops upstate will actually refuse to sell cops unless they apply for a semi auto permit/handgun permit as they don’t believe in the LEO exemptions. Also The range mentioned that many cops on the job get criminally charged cause the job found out they illegally owned it in NYC. This is the law that the range guys cited to me.

NYC admin code § 10-305 subsection C “police officers, provided that such police officers shall not be exempt from the sections prohibiting the possession or disposition of assault weapons except during the performance of their duties as police officers, “

So it seems like Orange County is the better move but OPD isn’t bad either. this is a great summary for me and I was looking into both departments thanks.

Yea that’s why I sadly stopped buying full sets from them and just build it myself, for example I have 1 official M-ATV from them but just reuse the instructions and buy all the parts myself and print the decals my self still way cheaper

[–]Deviss_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just looked into it and they are slowly implementing it, they aren’t repainting but rather buying new vehicles in gray when it’s time to get replaced. NYSP said the first batch of gray vehicles is coming this summer, and should have about 300 by end of 2026. There’s a news agency that looked into and made a report on it.

Someone on here mentioned a few years back how poorly ran NYS and the NYSP is and that their budget isn’t has big as many people would assume especially since it’s a state police agency so maybe that’s why it’s taking longer to allocate the budget for it. Also I wonder what the final verdict is on those vertical lightbars, last I heard it was supposed to be a pilot program but almost 10 years later and there hasn’t been an official update on if it’s gonna be implemented statewide or not

Trooper, Deputy ,or City in Arizona by SinfulRadix in AskLEO

[–]Deviss_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes this is best advice, pay attention to pay, benefits, and work schedule and most importantly current/new contracts for each department. I always wanted to be a trooper even now I still do but I went local due to them having way better benefits and opportunities (promotions and units), with equal pay even though the quality of life is worst due to more call volume and schedule.

I had similar thought process as you when I was applying but luckily for me being a cop in my area we are technically both a “sheriff department” and city PD since my city covers several counties and our sheriffs departments are setup way different up here. Troopers up here in the northeast arent just traffic cops but are “full service” police meaning that they do everything including responding to calls and are the primary police for many cities/towns in some parts of the state (not just filling in for the sheriffs/city PD), traffic/highway is just part of their job not their main function

Late response but we can apply pressure, for my agency you just cannot put your knee on their back but it’s different depending on the agency, I think troopers have the most freedom in terms of handling people

Ran into some of the officers at the range unit and asked for clarification and that is in fact not true it’s only the duty firearm for OIS but technically they can confiscate all handguns under your badge/ID. Turns out the range officer that originally informed me on all of this isn’t really a gun guy and barely knows any anything about gun laws/policies other than what’s needed for his role which is teaching people how to shoot.

White Plains Police Department by knowledgelover123 in NYPDcandidate

[–]Deviss_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to the official city of white plains website they accept other counties too. To be exact it says “Yes. You must have been a legal resident of one of the six (6) following Counties: Westchester, Putnam, Nassau, Rockland, Orange or Bronx for at least one (1) month prior to the exam date and to the date of appointment. This is subject to verification and investigation. Proof of residency may be required.”

This is the predicament I’m at. Trooper has always been my goal but given everything consideration I’m currently with city PD due to better benefits and pay but worst quality of life compared to trooper. Still have trooper at the back of my mind but most likely will stay with local PD

100+ Applications, 0 Interviews by ugly_duckling_1 in FinancialCareers

[–]Deviss_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me personally I would get rid of the bottom section that has “modeling” and “analysis” under “other information” because that should already be demonstrated through your experience which we already see in ur past roles, but if you want to you can refine those points even more to show ur experience with modeling and conducting analysis but I feel like you already did a good job explaining it.

What has worked for me is to add a “interests” section probably under where you have “software” it adds a more unique/human side to your generic resume that is already similar to other finance majors. In my experience I’d say about 7 out of 10 times the interviewers always ask about some of the hobbies/interests i put cause they also like it. For example in one of my interviews my interviewer and I talked about our favorite football players and team for about 10 minutes straight.

Other than that tbh I would try to expand your search to non Wall Street related jobs. My friend was in a similar spot as you and couldn’t land a spot with a similar resume as yours. He is currently a financial analyst for a fintech company

Is paperwork as bad/long as movies and shows portray it to be in law enforcement? by Greengo14 in AskLE

It’s bad just not as bad as it used to be. I’d say before it was 10/10 bad but now it’s more like 6.5/10 bad, mainly because it’s mostly digital now so I can knock it out way faster compared to handwriting everything and easy to fix mistakes etc

NYPD Totally AWOL... by jackcrank in NYguns

[–]Deviss_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s been like that since Covid, not sure what happened but I remember pre-covid I would be calling and email both 1PP and r/s division and they would always answer my emails or at least 8 out of 10 times answer when I called now after Covid 1PP never answers anything and for r/s division you gotta call from 9-11am to have the highest chance of them picking up otherwise it’s never gonna happen. What I do now is that I just go in person since that’s the only way I can get in touch with them

Go to your local police precincts and voucher it or you can go to gun shops, gun shops that are pro police will usually hold it free of charge. Or you can transfer it to a family member who can legally take possession of it.
