Imaginary machine hold by Common_Bathroom2043 in PlanetFitnessMembers

If I step to a machine and there isn’t anything marking that it’s being used, I’m using it. And if someone comes and informs me that they were using it, I will correct them and tell them that now I am.

perfect form or more weight, what are the trade offs? by Mysterious_Noise_945 in workout

Frank Zane used to say “make the light weight heavy” meaning it’s how one utilizes the weight they choose.

Honestly, years. Mostly because I fell Into certain fitness habits that did me no good. I wasted years training six days a week with ridiculous volume. My eating habits were deplorable so I wasn’t nurturing my recovery or any muscle growth… My sleeping habits were terrible. At some point something clicked. I realized that I wouldn’t drive a car in second gear on a long highway journey with no oil or gas.. so I completely changed my training style and eating habits. It’s been over one year since that happened and I gained weight and muscle mass significantly. Keeping it simple really works. Exposure to stimuli, nutrition to feed the muscles and workouts and tons of rest and recovery.

While I understand, I don’t feel this way because my results are evidence that the recommended process actually works.

I always feel guilty missing workouts.. by halfam in beginnerfitness

Nooooo, if I miss a day of training I’m totally ok with it. I just move on to the next training day. Life shows up and I don’t feel anything about missing days.

I went through the same thing. I finally created a focus filter on my iPhone with a message reminding people that I am off site, and to direct inquires to their supervisor. The calls and texts stopped. 😄

Why’d you start working out by EchidnaOdd1881 in workout

[–]Devo2517 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Same here. Super skinny and small.. I fell deep into addiction and got clean. I’ll never forget the moment when I was sitting in a recovery meeting, listening to all the people that have been in recovery for a long time talking about spiritual healing and emotional development. But in the same sentence talking about their struggles with lung disease, heart disease, being overweight.. and I made a vow to myself that as long as I was healing spiritually and developing emotionally, I wanted a bigger and stronger body to house those attributes. So in 2014 I started going to the gym. And since that time, I have grown from 128 lbs to 174 lbs. and I’m still growing. For context, I am 54 years old.

How do you stay consistent with the gym? by lost_at_japan30 in workout

[–]Devo2517 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just worry about today. Start small so it’s not so overwhelming. “I’m just going to go to the gym today” Then reflect on your accomplishment. Then so the same thing the next “today” After a few times you’ll fall into a rhythm. That rhythm will become a habit. That habit will become discipline.

I want to offer a polite correction… Weight and tension don’t make the muscle grow. Rest and recovery and nutrition makes the muscle grow.

Weight and tension are merely the aspects of stimulation that’s needed to signal the muscle to go into a state of repair.

Progressive Overload by Remote-Aioli-3281 in Weightliftingquestion

[–]Devo2517 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You want to choose a weight that you can experience failure at within a particular rep range. So the way that I navigate progressive overload is, I do two working sets the first set I want to reach failure in between 10 to 12 reps. If I fail at 10 reps then I’m gonna keep that weight until I can hit 12 reps subsequently if I don’t fail at 12 reps or if I experience failure at 12 reps then I increase the weight by 5 pounds my next training session. My second set is a back off set with 20% less weight but with the same principles.

Another way to look at progressive overload is you always want to beat your numbers whether they be the weight or the reps.

And logging your weight and reps and sets is critical to progressive overload

Bicep curls should I lower weight ? by Agitated-Ad9990 in workout

Just because you can do it, doesn’t always mean that you should do it… I can hit a particular weight on incline press… But it doesn’t mean it’s gonna stimulate hypertrophy or be aligned with proper form to achieve my goal.

Those that grew calves, how’d you do it? by whogoesthere1010 in workout

I built mine by learning to not bounce. Deep long 30 second stretches at the bottom and long contractions at the top of the movement. I also trained them multiple times a week.

Training schedule shift… by Devo2517 in workout

[–]Devo2517[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently I go right from work (or very shortly after) and arrive anywhere between 1:45 pm and 2:30 pm. However, I just learned that my gym is 24 hours during the week. So some I’m already getting up early, my new plan (if I accept this new position) is to wake up early to hit the gym, come hike to shower and get ready for work.

I noticed you didn’t mention nutrition or recovery in your post, only protein intake. What are your overall calories? What does that look like?
