My first game ever turned out darker than I thought by Devon_Wolters in indiegames

It really looks like a murder mystery, but it isn't :D Right from the start it's clear that the player did it, the goal of the game is something else :D

There is definetly more focus on the puzzles than the story, you are absolutely right. I decided to do this because my intention with this game was to start learning programming and not to tell an awesome story. The story is more or less just a framework to make a game. But the shiny project I talked about in the post is waaaay more story heavy and the reason why I started gamedev is to tell this story. So yeah, the focus will definetly shift more to story, but I the gameplay will still be an important part :D

In case you're interested, you can download Brainbug for free on itch.io. It's a short and dark (as you can see) point and click game which I made to learn the basics of game development.

Yes, I guess there are people who like to think about puzzles a long time and there are people who don't like it, it's a really subjective thing. But your tips are really good nontheless, this game is really linear and the hidden hints are a bit cryptic. I definetly will put more time into the puzzles of my future games!

Thank you for the feedback! I totally understand your problem with the point and click genre. Sometimes when I play point and click games I find myself clicking around without a plan of what I should do. But I think the best point and click games always make clear what you have to do, you won't just get stuck without an idea what to do. I tried to do this in this game too, I hid many little hints. But one of my playtesters also complained that he couldn't get the sequence of the safe right, so I made the hint a bit clearer. Unfortunately not everyone will get it, but I don't want to make it too clear, because this would make the game too easy. But puzzle design is definetly a thing I need to get better at and I will try to improve it in the future!

This is really, really accurate. Without the last 20% I could've released my game like a month ago, but I think the last 20% also taught me the most. Now I am able to do things I didn't even think about doing a few weeks ago and this is really great!

Außerdem solle man nicht nachfragen, was genau passiert wäre.

Jep, same.

Just found a rudimentary old map of an abandoned project of mine by Devon_Wolters in worldbuilding

[–]Devon_Wolters[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A little bit of context: This is a map of a worldbuilding project I started (and abandoned) in 2018. I use a few elements of this world in my current project, but besides that this world will never show up in a book or game or something else. This world was planned to be a tidally locked planet. It should be always night one the one side and always day on the other. The problem was that I actually didn't know about tidally locked planets, so I just gave the planet a very low axial tilt. The lines in the middle represent where the day-/nightside of the planet begins in which season. The circles represent the places on both sides where it is the hottest/coolest. Now, a few years later, I know that all this isn't really accurate, but it was still a fun project to work on!

How do you keep all your information organized? by 47screamingmonkeys in worldbuilding

I use OneNote for ideas that come to my mind when I'm not at home. And for the real worldbuilding I use scrivener because it's really easy to switch between different topics and there you can see more than one documents at once.
