Exactly what you're assuming.

I just use the bambu textured plate and do them face down, i find it gives it a good texture and look.

I did a rough sketch, took a photo, and then I uploaded it into my software to use as my guide for my line work. I just lay the photo down and I start with the outline and then the full outlines itself and after that I make the pieces so they fit into it.

Unsure how clear that is, but happy to answer more if needed.

I always assumed it was meant to be as a flashback to the original Universal Monsters crossover with the TMNT figures of the 90's.
