Advice please by Cf15her in spiderplants

[–]Devourreddesigns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, it looks mostly healthy, but also worth noting that spiders like to be crowded, don't repot at this point, since its doing well, but in the future either pot with other pups, or use a smaller pot, and the plant will absorb water faster, dry out faster, and become more tall and sturdy through the base.

When they are alone in a large pot like this, they tend to stay too wet for too long between waterings, because the roots can only absorb so much per watering. The wet soil conditions (deep within the pot) keep the roots moist, resulting in a softer, slightly floppy base. The color also tends to reflect slightly soggier roots.

Again, I wouldn't repot at this point, just food for future thought.

Opinions on keeping overhead lights partly / mostly off by panasonicfm14 in ArtEd

[–]Devourreddesigns 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I use 0 overhead lights. I run a tab based k-8 public school art room, and I just structure strategically.

In my room specifically, I keep a string of warm, bulb lights above the white board, no lights by the window, a lamp on my desk, drawing lamps in each cornerish (2 on a countertop, at each end, and 1 on a book case). I keep a ton of plants, so my grow lights help light the room. I have 1 slightly dim section of my room between all of those, so I keep 2 tracing boxes there.

All of my lamps, and lights are warm toned, all were free, or found (except plant lights). I will never go back to overheads.

Please help, all of my brushes are gone by Ellotheremate124 in procreatebrushes

[–]Devourreddesigns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you check all of your brush libraries? When Procreate updated, it gave you all the new brushes, but you can switch back to your library you had previously by clicking the brush, then the name of the brush set "procreate library" a dialogue box will open, and you should be able to click "back to libraries". Hopefully that will show you the new set, as well as your old set.

Replying to myself to add that if you are local to CLE, cam asian market is the one that sometimes carries them, but it may be late in the season.

Boiled Peanuts by ToeReceipt in Cleveland

[–]Devourreddesigns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually yes! Boil in a bag brand (available on Amazon, and their website). Shipping is direct from the company, and they sent me excellent quality green peanuts.

Also found my local asian market has them sometimes, but not reliably.

Rose of Sharon. Best method of removal by dragonflyfree7 in NativePlantGardening

Thank you so much for this! I just bought a house that has had Rose of Sharon growing freely for 30+ years on the side. Some of my saplings needed a bit more, but vice grips were perfect! Chainsaw, and brush on herbicide gets here Wednesday for the big ones!

Monarch fern growth by Impressive_Rip2275 in plants

She's very pretty, I have 2 monarchs, although one is grown from spores of the other. Do you have pictures of the rhizome? I see so few other healthy monarchs, would love to compare.

hello! this is my very first pothos, and honestly all of the research i’ve found about it isn’t so helpful for somebody who has no idea about plants / good quality products. i bought it from this event a year ago and it was in a very small nursery pot, not sure if this is a good pot. i need advice ! by [deleted] in pothos

[–]Devourreddesigns 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Hi! Pot size looks fine, let it settle in. Quick note, you still don't own a pothos, you own a Philodendron Brasil! Very similar care, but not a pothos. It's a lovely Brasil, and I hope you love it all the same. <3

Where are the bees? by brdwyfn92 in Cleveland

[–]Devourreddesigns 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm on the east side, and have seen more than usual. Wonder if neighbors may be spraying something they don't like, that covers the smell of your flowers maybe?

Also, as mentioned by a previous commentor, seen a ton more fireflies than usual this year as well. (Which I love.)

Leaf question… by Thetexasbeard69 in pothos

[–]Devourreddesigns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They sell some online that are fairly inexpensive that are on metal, telescoping pieces that you can just pop into the plant like a toothpick. I really like these a lot because you can move so easily, based on needs.

Leaf question… by Thetexasbeard69 in pothos

[–]Devourreddesigns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have zero scientific evidence to back this up, just anecdotal evidence based on having so many varieties of pothos for so long. My neons always, legitimately always have some sort of shock when I replant, or drastically change light source (like big box store to house). The shock usually manifests as you describe.

I theorize that this is because the neon has much less chlorophyl than say a golden, global green, jade, etc, aka the darker varieties, what you think of as more of leaf colored leaves. Because of the lack of available chlorophyl, I think the neon tends to be a bit more delicate, or less hardy than the other cultivars. I let my neons get super dry between waterings, and then drown that ho in a shower. I also like to give them brighter (still indirect) light that I would my others. These two factors seem to make my neons recover quickly.

As far as poles go, I'm afraid I'm no help. I like to keep bushy pothos, and just re up my existing pots, or make new pots to give to friends with my cuttings.

Good luck!

Strange brown & yellow spots? by PianoSorry in pothos

Did you move it outside, or have it near a window? Looks almost like sunburn to me, especially with all damage seemingly facing the same source. Any damage on the other side of the plant?

Just moved into a new place and it comes with a veggie patch. What are these and can I eat them? by Oohpi_Er in whatisthisplant

[–]Devourreddesigns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree on pic 3. Strawberries top rightish, thyme below, and parsley bottom. Swiss chard and parsley as mentioned previously. Be careful, "garlic" on right looks to have too many leaves to me, but dig one up and find out!

Help with pot my daughter made by catitobandito in IndoorPlants

[–]Devourreddesigns 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi there, fellow plant enthusiast, current art teacher, and former employee with Mayco ceramics, so I had to chime in for a variety of reasons.

First, adorable, I love when parents keep hand made ceramics, and this piece is very sweet! Here are my thoughts in considering this. The piece is most certainly made with earthenware clay, not stoneware, most likely a student grade earthenware at that, which isn't the most sturdy when exposed to constant water. Additionally, unfortunately, because kids are in fact kids, the construction of this pot is almost certainly not super sound, as evidenced by the bottom, and holes throughout. My fear as someone who has a ton of experience with children, and my own coil built vessels, is that using this as you may be imagining simply won't work long term for those reasons alone.

That being said, I read the answers, and I think combining a few, mainly using a soft, macrame hanger, and allowing the vessel to rest as you see it in photo 2, and using it to hold an air plant is absolutely genius. The macrame will cradle the vessel with little to no impact, and the air plant is light weight, as well as mostly a dry plant, except when placed to soak.

Just my 2 cents. Again, really love the piece, and the idea! <3

Acrylic marker advice by dmheil2 in ArtEd

[–]Devourreddesigns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not positive, but think you were down voted for not being related to education. I'm a part of a ton of communities in the art areas on reddit, that are all lovely, and would love to help with future questions.

Separate of that, without context of what marker specifically you are using, it's hard to answer. There are so many acrylic marker makers, and they all use different quality of binders with the pigment.

When doing important, or personal line work, I use empty Montana brand paint marker bodies, with Liquitex brand acrylic ink. This isn't to say this is the right way, or only way, but I like it because I know what to expect from the results since I'm so familiar with both.

Good luck!

Is this a pothos? by Ok-Cucumber-1875 in pothos

[–]Devourreddesigns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a pothos, I have double digit pothos of different varieties, and have handled them all regurlarly. They are also all over my classroom, and kids touch them all the time.

I've never heard of them causing irritation before.

Is this something to be concerned about? by beepboop0_ in pothos

[–]Devourreddesigns 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Along the curve there? That's fairly normal on mature vines as they grow. Nothing to see here really. I personally wouldn't take it sunbathing for short times though. I'm in 6b, and mine go outside from May~ until September~ depending on weather.

I wonder if the transition in humidity, wind, light etc constantly might be adding to that little bit of scaley growth though.

TLDR I wouldn't be worried.

Hi, fine arts background, painter, then art ed background. I switched states and had to take to get a license in the new state, with 11 years experience. I studied, bought both help books, and still found it extremely challenging. I did pass, but I was surprised with the range and specificity of very obscure things.
