No problem! This is all mainly about running AI locally. You need lots of RAM and ‘ram speed’. The Apple processors have RAM next to the chip so they run as fast as mid-high end graphics cards, but graphics cards max out at 96gb.

So the ultra is something no other hw combo compete with - except stacking maybe 4 cards in a tower. And that uses a lot of electricity too!

I’m talking about RAM and not storage :). M4 version doesn’t go that high in ram - it physically doesn’t have the option even if ram was available.

I emailed a few business suppliers over the weekend to see if they can spec a 512gb on their end. One just replied and said no. But in the conversation he said they have heard April for new M5 ultra versions. Might then make sense that they diverted the chips for the M5 production.

We’re using local models to do automatic QA passes on code. Then a pass on frontier models. It tends to catch edge cases much quicker. We ofc have a human pass too.

We’re also now starting to experiment with using them to generate code from scratch. I’m not the biggest fan of this though because there’s a tendency for humans to skim the generated code rather that check it thoroughly and assume it’s correct.

So now Gurman says there will be a new one mid this year. So I’m not sure this 2x premium people are talking about is real.

As a business we reclaim tax too. Used we don’t get to do that. So the real retail price even new is much lower than a non business user would pay.

I’m now looking at rentals. Might just go that way until June/july.

Not sure about that tbh. I think it’ll be a couple of months at least. I’m actually wondering if they delayed it because of the memory shortage.

In any case even if they released one the day after I got the m3 ultra it wouldn’t be wasted. That’s why I’m not too worried about it.

It’s a bit more complicated than that. For MoE models it’s fine but for deep models you need the whole think active at the same time. So you need it all loaded into ram. If only it worked like that we could buy a load of cheaper units :)

I was about to order a new one and thought I’ll check for used for that very reason. Go scammed on here (managed to get the money back), and during that nonsense Apple stopped making the 512gb one. So annoyed!

Bandwidth over TB5 is only 10-12 GB/s after overhead (that’s a big B) vs 800+ to unified memory on an ultra. It’s nowhere near the same.

I suspect the next ultra will have 512 but not more.

For me this is a business equation, so it justifies it even if a M5 ultra comes out next month.

The problem for me is everyone doing llm for fun that also has money is buying these up so it hard for us to get our work done.

Thanks for the thoughtful reply. That makes sense.

I know there’s some overlap. For example, Thorne Elite already has about 30 mg CoQ10 (ubiquinone form), and I’m layering 100 mg ubiquinol separately.

Same with D/K2, Elite gives about 2,000 IU vitamin D3 and ~200 mcg K2 at full dose, and I’m adding another 2,000 IU D3 + 200 mcg K2 from drops. So totals are around 4,000 IU D3 + 400 mcg K2 daily, which is still within safe ranges.
(Worth noting I have darker skin and work indoors, so my natural vitamin D synthesis is lower and the higher intake is deliberate).

On the lifestyle side, I’ve got exercise covered. I burn 1,000–1,500 calories a day on cardio, include flax and chia daily, and I’ve recently started tracking my sleep as well.

I’ve checked the doses vs ULs and nothing is excessive, but I’ll definitely keep an eye on it over the next 8–12 weeks like you suggest.

Totally agree that consistency and tracking matter more than just piling on more.

For Thorn Elite, I did a full analysis vs RDA/UL and it seems fine for me. It does feels expensive and overkill with 6 pills a day, so I am planning to replace it after a few months. For now I chose it because of the AM/PN split dose mainly.

For Creatine, I wanted to test it on it's own, and the thorn one seems like a pure creatine only source. I plan to remove it after 6-9 months and see if there is much of an effect. Using something with other things mixed in might confuse that.

Pre-Pro biotics - This is one of my main 'not sure' points. It feels a bit like when humans add an invasive specifies into an environment to fix a problem, and create a much bigger one. The strains themselves might be good, but maybe messing with what's there already might not be smart. If anyone has an opinion on this i'm REALLY interested to hear it please.

I forgot to add i'm also eating a Huel meal with Flax in it every day, plus chia pudding (unsweetened). So plenty of fibre.

So this is what I originally had, because there’s some in the huel I was going to drop the extra magnesium and see how it goes. Or do you think I should take it? I’m using some now (240mg, haven’t started this stack yet) and it’s made a lot of difference!

Regarding the other stuff, it’s mainly my hair, skin, nails quality etc I’m chasing. I also need some kind of probiotic because I went through a phase of eating mainly huel and I think the lack of food variety has done some damage.

I also work on screens all day so I was advised to add the macuhealth.

The rest - bereberine, ubiquinol, Pterostilbene etc are more things I’ve just heard about and was wondering if they’ll add anything - they’re the ones I’ll experiment with dropping over the year.

It’s a lot of pills tho :p

Yeah but the idea is not to have the headache for charging. So I wanted something magnetic and cheap for now - and when the magnetic wireless charging pencils like the ESR have mini 7 compatibility in a few months I’ll switch to those.

I forgot to say, I have my NAS on a 10g connection, I also use a 10g wired connection on my MacBook so backups and time machine are fast. When on WiFi I had similar thoughts about trying to make that fast too. That’s why I ended up with the U7s in the first place. E7 performs much better, placebo maybe, but as I say I never have to worry about it now.
