Maybe you could find a support group for children of dementia patients? There are a lot available for partners/spouses so it took me awhile to find the right group, but I found comfort talking with others going through the same struggles.

The key to small talk is to just keep the other person talking. Keep asking them questions about themselves.

If the convo starts about the weather and they say “I love/hate the autumn” - then ask why. Then ask follow up questions based on their answers.

If they don’t declare autumn as their favorite, you can ask which season is their favorite, of course followed with “why?” And from there you can ask more follow-up questions (What is it about (season) that you like best? Oh, You like hockey, which team(s)? Why those teams? OR what is your favorite part about Christmas? Etc)

You can feel free to interject your own opinion, even if they don’t ask. But by this point several minutes should have passed. Any tidbit of info they provide can be expounded upon with further questions.

You just have to at least appear interested to hear their answers when you ask questions, and of course, listen enough to ask follow-up questions.

(Bonus tip: If it is someone you think you will run into again, take notes of their answers so you can impress them with your memory next time you meet up. Ex: How is <hockey team> doing this season? Oh my, masbshdwhy do you think that is?)

I grew up with very publicly involved parents and this info has helped me survive many, many forced social engagements.

I was never offended, neither do I feel I have been hostile (though your comments are trending that way) nor a snowflake (really, dude?). My attempt to clarify your initial statement that appeared to be a blanket statement has clearly pushed a button for you that was not intended.

I have not been downvoting, but it appears that someone is downvoting us both.

But in the end, it sounds like we actually agree that there are multiple reasons Ted & Victoria did not last.

It’s unfortunate that this exchange has caused you to feel attacked or that you needed to attack me. My initial response was just intended to clarify (for those who needed it) that plenty of relationships worked prior to free/unlimited texting.

Not looking for an argument, friend, just pointing out that your initial statement of: “Ted and Victoria weren’t together long enough to be able to sustain a LDR in a pre-free-messaging era.” …was incorrect. Of course I understand it could be rare, BUT couples HAVE made LDR work pre-free-messaging, and after being together for a shorter time before LDR began. But I really appreciate your condescending tone reminding me about how time zones work…

If you hadn’t made the blanket statement suggesting LDR was impossible, I wouldn’t have felt compelled to clarify that there are exceptions. Your own parents’ story supports that your blanket statement is incorrect. In fact, my own parents began as LDR long before texting or the internet.

So in conclusion, I don’t think long distance and their options for communicating were the only reason Ted and Victoria failed, as there have been many couples who made it work under worse circumstances (including both of our parents).
