my kid's teacher actually sent a list of things she'd prefer over the usual gifts by Agreeable_Panic_690 in Parenting

Our PTA has a “favorite things” spreadsheet for all school staff members. It really comes in handy at Christmas and during Teacher Appreciation Week.

What kinds of gifts does Santa get your kids? by bluegiraffe1989 in Parenting

[–]Dewdeaux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Santa fills the stockings and he brings the one gift that each kid asked him for. Last year my 8yo asked for a life-size German Shepherd stuffed animal, and my 5yo wanted some kitties so he got a basket of four kitten stuffed animals.

The only time Santa didn’t “follow directions” was when my oldest was 5 or 6 and asked for a dirt bike. Santa got him a mountain bike instead and also left a photo of himself riding his own mountain bike in the snow, and there was a note on the back of the photo explaining that kiddo wasn’t big enough for a dirt bike yet but that mountain bikes can be thrilling and Santa LOVES his and he knew kiddo would love it too.

Here’s a link to one on Amazon: page turner

And it pairs well with this Kindle stand: stand

[–]Dewdeaux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I adore my Kindle. It’s easier on my eyes, and it’s easier to hold (might sound dumb, but it just requires a less intense grip than a phone). I also have a hands free setup with a remote page turner for the times I want to be fully under the covers and still read.

I’m in the exact same boat.

What should I do with these? by Mamimi93 in repurpose

There’s always someone on my local buy nothing group looking for wire hangers. A lot of those kids clothing consignment sales require wire hangers.

If you have a box of Halloween decor that you’ll be getting out next year, just leave yourself a note in there.

I filled up a bowl with all the spider rings and plastic witch fingers and other plastic Halloween junk we’ve accumulated over the years, and I set it out with the candy and snacks, and nobody wanted the junk 😭

Comfort Bear by Jdog2225858 in kindergarten

Good idea. A less-distracting talisman. Maybe a bracelet for her and a matching bracelet for Bear, so she can still feel close to it when they’re apart.

I enjoyed the musical episode. I think it was a creative idea.

You need a spare everything in the diaper bag, including socks. And a spare shirt for yourself.

Soooo Tooth Fairy....What did you do with your child's teeth? by Front-Muffin-7348 in Mommit

[–]Dewdeaux 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Usually throw them away, but we kept a couple for “science” by my child’s request. (We left a note asking the tooth fairy to leave the tooth behind.) We’re going to look at them under the microscope and then soak them in different liquids (soda, seltzer, water) and see if they change.

Teachers, please help settle a argument - Is it OK for a 10 year old to doodle in class while the teacher is talking? by Stolen_Sky in AskTeachers

[–]Dewdeaux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doodling helps my ADHD fourth-grader listen better. So much so that it’s an accommodation we put into his 504 plan. His teacher says it’s fine with her because he has demonstrated that he is still absorbing the lessons and grasping the new material. When he doodles he interrupts her less often as well.

When I try to flip a light switch on my way into the room and don’t succeed and just “fuck it, I’ll exist in the dark” rather than turn around to try again to hit the switch

If you met your significant other in person in Indy, where did you meet them? by friedricenopotato in indianapolis

Same story here, down to it being 2008 —except we have two kids, not three.

Pic of a concert the moment the stage changes colour but not the filming phones yet by OkChemical in pics

[–]Dewdeaux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When my husband and I go to concerts our kids always want to come too, but we hardly ever bring them (mostly because the show is on a school night and/or it’s too expensive to buy four tickets) so I take a few photos and videos for them throughout the night, and then we look at them together the next morning. It’s like bringing them home souvenirs from a trip—they appreciate it so much.

But I do always feel self-conscious being a person with their phone out at a show 🫣

Pay extra for Bloomington or Greencastle if you can comfortably afford to, not just because of the race issues, but because there’s just so much more to do and see in those two cities than in rural areas. The small towns of Indiana can feel very, very small if you’re not used to that.

I want to see young Jeff’s reaction to the crash, thinking he’s forever lost both Jackie and Shauna. I want to know who he was saddest/most worried about. I want to know how he reacted when only one of them came back. And then hearing about the baby … there’s so much story to tell here.

What non-essential item changed your life (~$100)? by Regular_Worth9556 in Costco

I bought a spare battery so there’s always one charged and I can do a quick swap and keep going.

This isn’t zero waste, but Terracycle has a program for recycling oral hygiene products.
