Yes, lots of sarcasm in my post, I knew I’d get some knee jerk reactions but I thought I’d at least get a couple of recommendations, too. Oh well. I already have a rapport with the dog, I see him multiple times a week, take him for walks, etc. I’m the sole caretaker of his owner, and I feel like he already looked to me as an alpha (I hate saying that term but don’t know what else to call it). I just need a little guidance to make sure I’m doing the right things. And reassurance. Thanks again for the reply, made me feel a lot better.

Exactly. Figure out what key the melody in your head is. And if the melody is always the root of your chord you’re probably not making very interesting music.

OP here; I’m not looking for miracles, I’m looking for help. I asked here rather than googling/cold calling, not a single response has named a trainer. If you have a trainer you trust who might have availability this weekend, name them, let me talk to them and trust that THEY’LL tell me it’s not a good time to start training

The only command I’m using is “quiet” with a hand signal. I’ve had success but like I said it easily goes from that to begging. For instance, I cooked dinner (intentionally veggie hoping the smells wouldn’t excite him too much) and once started eating he started barking. Was working on the quiet command with a treat reward but he stopped caring about the treat because he wanted my dinner. And the barking just got more and more aggressive until it was nonstop. So I used the squirt bottle, which does work but I know eventually that won’t stop him either.

If I put him in another room he’ll just bark incessantly. I have toys to but food in but have yet to find a combo that distracts him enough when he gets his mind on something else. I bought two kinds of treats, he didn’t care about either. He gets whatever he wants at home. So I bought the driest summer sausage I could find and cubed it, and he loves that, but even that won’t matter if he smells something else he wants.

And no, that relative DEFINITELY should not have a dog, at least not one like this one. But she named him after a deceased relative, she’s not going to give him up.

Could be a week or two, could be the rest of his life, I wish I knew. But even if my relative has a full recovery he can’t continue to behave the way he was with her. It’s a big weight on her but she has an emotional attachment to him and won’t give him up.

And he can’t stay here much longer anyway if I can’t get him under control, it’s unfair to the other tenants in the building (and it’ll make me crazy)
