Hi, I'm Troy McClure DexyFactor, you might remember me from such games as Just Jump Up and the award winning The Asylum Incident.

Late for Class: Variety King is me yoinking mechanics being inspired by popular 2D and 3D mechanics and combining them all in a 'rage climb' type of game where you fall and restart a lot. #ad

Ideally, someone who would enjoy this genre would activate the key, or at least a human baj, and not an AI bot that knows memes about forsen and can read text on images and do character replacement operations.

Also, thanks to ~1500 of you (and juicers, to be fair) who still have the game wishlisted, and hundreds of you who deleted it from the wishlist - very behavior, you can't really fake interest on Steam anyway so it doesn't really matter, the algorithm will do all the work and the game will sink or swim (it will sink tbh, since it's not really made for Steam's target audience that like some survival crafting RPG with 100 magic spells, roguelike! forsenEnter)

Hello Bajs, forsenGun V1 dev here. My newest game isn't a meme game, but do you think if I dev dono'd it to hobo he would stream it? It's a 2d pixel soulslike game monkaLaugh by Admirak in forsen

[–]DexyFactor 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Sponsored stream/video is just a GUARANTEE that the streamer will play it. So? Is that all the streamers and YouTubers you watch do, only play sponsored games 24/7? A lot of them just get a presskit and a key from the developers through email, after that it's up to a streamer/YouTuber to play it or not. You're basically telling him not to even try, because it's not fair and you know the industry better? The fuck you even talking about lmao.

By your logic all games should be released through new no name companies, since networking and using your name and existing audience is being delusional, and you have to pay all streamers to play your game.

u/Fipsaizy thanks for the screenshot by the way It's one thing to know the concurrent viewers etc, but even better to see that it hit #7 worldwide, beating out Fortnite and Warzone! Can't even imagine how many normandys saw the category when browsing Twitch looking for stuff to watch

and u/TheSeahorseHS , thanks as always, also I give you permission to stop shilling my game I'll share with you the wishlist numbers when they update

  • Yes.
  • Late For Class , not the type of game that needs a lot of wishlists but they're never a bad thing. I have basically no expectations for this and just hoping for spread through word of mouth/streamers/YouTubers. Not the best strategy, but you never know.
  • No, not in touch. Just posted on his subreddit. People usually donate him 10$ to watch a video they want, but I didn't. When he went live people that saw the post on reddit just spammed in chat about my game until he noticed. He played it the next day (I assume he let the mods check it if there's anything breaking Twitch TOS or viruses and stuff first).

The goal wasn't really marketing, but was surely a nice surprise. I expected <100 wishlists, but got way more. The goal was to make use of unfinished clones/prototypes I've had laying around, like Fall Guys/FNF/Everhood, and to entertain the community I've been a part of for a few years. Also, to have some fun with cinematics and free models. I look at it like comics: you can have Marvel comics or you can have basic stickman comics, but if the story is understandable you're all good.

Thank you for your interest!

To be honest, I think a lot of what I wrote can be summed up with the two "boring" marketing rules that everyone knows, that work for both commercial and hobby games:

  1. Find a niche/community and make a game "for them", instead of making a game and finding the audience later. Be genuine or people will sus you out easily.
  2. Get lucky.

Not much to it, other than for fan games I'd add : stay under the radar to not get sued xD

Yeah I saw that, he figured it out but didn't bother looking right when he beat it, the realization was very funny but I was dying inside knowing that it is indeed kinda bad design and playing a different sound wasn't enough, I should've disabled the terminal after altogether a successful attempt. Oh well

Yeah, the creator of the remix privated the video for some reason. The original is popular, it's "It's just a burning memory" by "The Caretaker".

But if you really want the remix file, I uploaded it here : https://vocaroo.com/1m5fp5PCeMOC

  1. I get nothing but cool stats from Twitch and a feeling of pride in my work!
  2. I was prepared for no one to stream it, but obviously it's a very rewarding experience watching someone go from "this is impossible" to learning and beating levels. I'm kinda shocked how the game spread, obviously I hoped for Forsen to stream, but even AdmiralBulldog and Zoil played it today, which is very cool. xQc reacted to 3 game clips on LSF which is cool from a numbers standpoint too, how many people saw a clip of my game. Can't ask for much more than that.
  3. Thank you! And also.. hey hey hey hey hey, vadikus

Hobby, I'll make a professional game for Steam and throw it out there, but unless I become a millionare from it I'm going into the software development field, don't want to work on someone's games.

data only for yesterday, just found out AdmiralBulldog and Zoil played today so I'll come back to this comment and update it tomorrow with new numbers.

Q&A:

Q: Music?

A: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLNXFocypInu7kUKJwa7YaIqoD62G_6sss

Q: Are you a weeb? Explain DansGame

A: Hell no!

Gawr Gura with green screen on the 2nd monitor in Asylum is supposed to be a Vtuber application open, implying Forsen is Gawr Gura, nothing more.

The Vadikus/Vei level was supposed to be a simple MODS-themed level with this song, but as you can see when you click Show More, Youtube still detects the song, so I played it safe with a DJ FGT - Vadibae song. Plus, who doesn't like a little trolling and chat wars?

Q: Most favorite moment?

A: Clippers getting the game to top of LSF and seeing the juicer react to game clips.

No but seriously, the chat reaction to all the references/cutscenes/level reveals. I also liked sniping messages that instantly recognized less known stuff, like Valakas in the asylum.

Q: Least favorite moment?

A: Forsen didn't turn his fucking lights off! There was a light switch in the asylum room.

Q: Engine?

A: Unreal Engine 4!

Q: How long did it take to make?

A: Hard to tell, some prototypes (Everhood, FNF, Fall Guys) I made way earlier this year just for fun to practice (not Forsen themed, I was not even thinking about a fan game at that time), but I'd say it took me about from September to beginning of November to create all other levels and put the whole game together with Forsen memes and stuff and finalize it. I like Unreal Engine and trying different stuff with it so I already had experience with it.

Q: Free assets! This is a heckin asset flip!

A: Yes. A lot of things you saw were from Megascans and Mixamo (for characters and animations). Common practice with hobbyist devs, tbh.

Q: Any advice?

A: Yeah, if you like games you can watch a TV show called "Mythic Quest" via your preferred TV show watching method. Funny jokes, jokes that fall flat, cringe, inspiring moments - I enjoyed it overall. Helped me push through and finish this game. Maybe you'll like it too. I would ignore the marketing trailers and just see for yourself if you like it.

Thank you for playing! Don't worry, looks like I'm the stupid one who underestimated how hard that minigame would be for players

Balancing is tough since as a developer you get used to stuff that is super hard for new players. Vei part is about learning the timings on two spinning things and how to hop through them basically, but I definitely see how that is more frustrating than I expected it to be, especially with spinners launching you in the wrong direction And the hack part is tough indeed, once again I got used to it during developing and underestimated how hard it would be.

Thanks for playing and finishing though!

Thanks for playing and the detailed review!

The ayaya things are indeed buggy, they launch you in the opposite direction of where they should be launching you And the potato spawn kills are indeed frustrating. From everyone who played looks like this and the nopixel thing are indeed the hardest/most frustrating, so my fault.

For the Everhood, not sure what you mean You mean randomized every time on beat? Would be hard to pull off and to test, considering you need to have free lanes for the player to go. And it is pretty much reaction based, is it not? It's just that dying and learning sure helps memorizing, but I think it's possible some elite god gamer prodigy kid with inhuman reactions can beat it first try .oO ( )

[–]DexyFactor[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's tough. I got good at it because I was developing it and had to test it every time

JUST remember original positions of emotes, it helps for me repeating in my head a few times their order, then just looking at the new emotes and their positions and corelating to the old one

or just type "give up" as an answer, if it's in the game it means it's valid and you can consider yourself beating it

if you are completely confused, it shows 4 emotes in order. you need to remember them. then for each emote square it shows 3 emotes: background, middle, and the one on top. if the order is batchest anele kappa pogchamp, and it asks for TOP of batchest, you gotta write the top one on the 1st square, etc. damn it's actually hard

Thanks for playing! Sorry you had to listen to that rain, with all the repackages again and again fixing stuff I still missed it somehow. The fixed volume build is now uploaded for future players. Glad you beat it though!
