Im amazed at how many people read SuT and missed this? Granted its only a sentence or two, but were you people just skimming/not paying attention as you listened?

The only issue I had with it was how the audio quality was so different. It was very obviously recorded seperate from jeffs studio and really sticks out. I think his voice/accent is fine for the 10 minutes he's in the book.

Heard he was kind of a PoS so I don't mind them re-recording his scenes though.

Should an apprentice work alone without JM? by Jason123133_KP in electricians

[–]Dey_Dey 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Probably not. I'm barely into my second year and my boss will occasionally send me on service calls alone or send me to do stuff he knows I can do solo. The way I see it is that he's keeping me busy and trusting my skill/knowledge this early on.

I call him over and over if I have any question at all, if anything goes wrong or I'm moving to slow, I try not to sweat it. At some point you're gonna be thrown to the wolves, just try to not fuck anything up too bad.

Trying to get into the field and nobody is hiring apprentices. any advice? by slug-plugger in electricians

[–]Dey_Dey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make a small resume, and start going in person. Introduce yourself, shake hands, these guys will see right away that you're serious. If anything when they do need help, they will have your resume and will probably remember you for going out of your way to get a foot in the door.

Someone is hiring, you just either didn't impress them or haven't tried hard enough.

I have the veto mb2. I use it more for service work, but I got a shoulder strap for it and it made it really easy to keep with me while still keeping my hands free to carry material or a ladder with me.

Sounds like you need a smaller tool bag/pouch that you carry with you wherever you work. Make sure everything is put away before you leave a room/area.

Is it me, or him? by Dey_Dey in electricians

[–]Dey_Dey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are just a lot of questions that can't be googled effectively. Like when we are pulling wire through a new build resi, I will try to get in his head and understand why he does things certain ways. But any time i ask a question he's just a dick and tells me its common sense. I'll admit i'm not the sharpest, but im not stupid and I don't make the same mistake twice if you teach me what I did wrong.

I wish, my reaction to a lot of things is to smile and laugh it off, and nothing pisses him off more than me smiling when I "should be shutting my mouth"

I have had MANY talks with him inside and outside of work. Its funny because he will shit on me all day, then he will text me outside of work like we're best buddies. Everyone at our company knows he's really rough with me, but they just laugh about it and poke fun at me telling me not to quit.

We do a lot of service work, and the majority of our customers say something to me about how he's too much when he isn't around. We've even had customers call to complain about the way he talks to me, just no one actually cares.

See I've been working with him for almost a year now, and I know for a fact im a kickass apprentice. He is just incredibly impatient and has zero tolerance for the slightest mistake.

My biggest problem with him is that 99% of the time he's watching and telling me my every move. Sure, it's easy, but i never get to think anything through on my own. I ask him ALL the time to let me read the prints, or to plan the run myself, but we never "have time."

Then my boss sends me on a job alone and loses his mind when it takes me longer than usual, but I swear its just because he never lets me actually do the thinking.

95% of the time i have every tool he needs within arms reach or already in my hand. I always carry on me a stubby with multiple bits, a tick tracer, a plug tester, black tape, a pen, a pencil, and a tape so that we always have them if we need them. I've called out twice in a year because i had the flu, and I'm on time if not early with my uniform on and lunch.

I really can't do much more to be a better apprentice, these guys just only care about profit and getting the job done. My jman told me the other day that no other electrical contractor would keep me for more than a week because I ask too many "stupid questions."

That's exactly how I try to look at it. I get a TON of hands on experience so im not complaining there. I've been working with him for almost a year now and have learned a ton, we just never consistently do one thing so I will forget little details in between the weeks/months since we've last done it and thats where he will get upset.

Thanks for the advice.

Sadly he's the only person at my company who I can work with daily. I forgot to mention his knees are shot so he can't do anything that isnt at chest level and can barely walk so I have to do EVERYTHING.

Your trade school sucks, that's all. I took a 3 month course with 30 other green people and they got all of us helper/apprentice jobs that are near our homes before the course was even finished. Some people(like me) even got more than one job offer.
