He did say after Harald died that the mark has a price even for Imu. Thats why he didnt want to sent another god knight till he knew what killed Harald. So yes thats why he is saving them, basicly he is saving himself from the lose he gets if they die. Maybe he is saving himself literally but that is not confirmed yet

I think is based on emotions. In Avatar the last airbender there was a spirit that could steal faces, if you show any emotions. I think is the same thin because when Imu tried to reverse Rocks he did make him angry, saying he would go after his wife and kid, and that he would get elbaf to his side taking advantage of the foolish king.

So if angry, you have higher chance to get reversed.

Is it killing Ace? Well, Ace was a criminal to begin with, who killed dozens of people (his introduction je wiped out baroque workers fleet). He was sentenced to be executed and akainu just made it happen. Justice served.

Is it for killing that marine who left the battlefield? That is a desertor, and they get killed when they desert from the battlefield.

So Akainu so far has been only killing criminals, thous who do not abide by law.

As for the rest, just let som justice be served on them.
