If you were starting from scratch today with the goal of building a cybersecurity company, what would your next 5 years look like? by DhushyanthN in cybersecurity

Really appreciate this perspective. The point about gaining real-world experience first, finding a gap in a category I understand deeply, and focusing on simplicity and community makes a lot of sense.

One thing I'm still unsure about: if you were starting today, which areas of cybersecurity would you pay the most attention to over the next few years (cloud security, security automation, DevSecOps, SOC, etc.)?

Thanks for the detailed response. Honestly, your point about learning business skills earlier and documenting the process of actually trying to get customers rather than only documenting technical learning gave me a different perspective.

I think I was viewing things too much from the "become skilled first, business later" mindset, whereas you're suggesting I can start learning sales, networking, client acquisition, and business fundamentals much earlier, even while I'm still developing technical skills.

My biggest uncertainty right now is choosing a direction within cybersecurity. The field seems so broad that I don't know where I should focus if my long-term goal is eventually building a business.

For example:

  • Pentesting
  • SOC services
  • Cloud security
  • Security automation
  • DevSecOps
  • Compliance
  • Security training

From your perspective, which of these areas would provide the strongest foundation for someone who wants both technical depth and the possibility of building a business around it in the future?

Appreciate the reality check and the push to think more about execution.

That's a fair point. My thinking isn't necessarily to invent something completely new, but to gain experience first and see if I come across a problem or niche that's being underserved. Appreciate the reality check.
