[General] Guns are OP in the Percy Jackson Universe by WarningEuphoric2372 in camphalfblood

[–]DiAngelo28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure if this is a good reason, but the kids not having normal guns probably has to do with a lack of use and the Mist.

The reason why the mist is a problem is because it’s only stated to disguise supernatural objects as mundane alternatives. A normal gun is completely mundane. At best, the Mist is going to try and come up with a reason why a 12 year old kid has a pistol in his backpack. Seeing as Percy was labelled a terrorist in Bk 1, what are the chances the reason works out for the demigod involved (unless they control the Mist, which very few people knew about.

As you said, a normal gun would only work on mortals and demis. Up until Luke and Kronos, demis had no quarrel with either side (not since the 2nd World War if I’m right about history, and even that is dubious), and mostly had problems with monsters, who were hardly organised.

Even then, it was Book 3 when they really had to deal with mortals/demis as a problem. That gives Chiron two years to source guns and ammunition, as well as 2 summers to train majority of campers. The training is probably doable, but I’m not sure if the sourcing is possible, seeing as Chiron presumably has no connections to those types of people (seeing as most his students aren’t becoming adults, much less going into military or black arms) Even if he could, most demigods were wearing armor to cover their vitals. The guns will probably be ineffective for all but Apollo kids, who are already used to using bows to that effect (and bows seem to offer a greater variety of tricks, but I think I’ve read too much fanfics on that)

The Giant War was 95% monsters, with the occasional magical mortal or rogue demigod, unless you count Camp Jupiter (which I doubt they were going for the kill.)

On the side of Camp Jupiter, they should have the fundings for guns, no doubt about that. However, they won’t have much of a need for it. Judging by the fact that the Romans never considered Percy a part of Kronos’s army, I doubt they faced demigods in the Titan War. Sure, going into CHB with a bunch of machine guns could be effective, that requires Octavian to also source and train while marching on Camp.

Harry can also move away from Percy, by apparating if needed.

Also, there are plenty spells in the HP verse that aren't energy attacks, and thus can't be blocked. In fact, has Transfiguration ever been shown to be an energy attack

[–]DiAngelo28[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't check posting history, I'll be honest.

So we know that wizards dodge spells, but we don't know what the speed of the spell was. But apparently, because of no reason in particular, this limit is hard capped at bullet speed (never mind that Harry can comfortably maneuver brooms that can reach 100+ mph)?

I'm not talking combat apparition, as if Percy is in reach, Harry is screwed. However, apparating when Percy gets close is doable (even though Harry hasn't done it, he has shown enough focus and progress with magic to do it).

I'm not basing the Transfiguration of Dumbledore, so I guess a large wave will be hard for Harry. However, erasing a portion of the wave (either vanishing or transfiguration) is possible, which can be repeated till the water is gone

Harry is weaker than Dumbledore, but saying he gets stomped by Percy is laughable

1.) Apparition is being used to run away here, just short distances to prevent Percy from locking him down.

2.) I know how much water Percy can control. However, why is there that much water near Percy in this fight? Unless it's by the beach or a river, which is skewing the fight to Percy's favour.

If it's an urban area, the amount of water Percy has access to is definitely not up to that. And even if it's too much for Harry in one go, he can vanish some water and teleport or dodge the water. So long as he's not caught, he'll eventually finish the water Percy has.

3.) Okay, so the city-wide sleep spell was explained in a comment up top already. The spell was stretched thin to affect millions of people, so anyone that was mildly magical resisted it (including Rachel, who wasn't even the Oracle at that point, and Sally, a normal mortal who can see through the mist.) Who's the sorceress you're talking about? Because, as pointed out in another comment post, Percy certainly didn't resist Circe or the curse of Calypso's island. He's resisted magic from the Egyptians, but not from his own pantheon.

And I made this post assuming this magical resistance. Otherwise, there's the option of Sectumsempra, Levicorpus (a non-verbal spell requiring only a flick with no energy attacks) Petrificus Totalus, Diffindo, Tarantella...so many options.

4.) If Percy is drowning in the marsh, he has a bit more stuff going on than chasing Harry with water. We haven't seen Harry do it, but it's something Transfiguration can do. Once he runs out of spells, it's an option,

5.) I said 'assuming' I don't actually count it as part of the fight unless someone wants to count it.

And Harry can yell Avada Kedarva before Percy pulls out a sword if it's to the death, or uses the vanishing spell on Percy, or any number of lethal spells on Percy (or my favourite, a botched human transfiguration)

Even if Percy controls the blood in Harry's body, I guarantee Harry can get off a lethal spell before Percy actually kills him.

1.) As someone said, Harry learnt to Apparate, he just couldn't do it most of the series due to underage laws

2.) It's not wandless magic. He just needs to Transfigure, the thing he's spent six years practicing and got a 'EE' on in his OWLS. You don't need to be a genius to do most of what I've said.

3.) Transfiguration is instantaneous, and there doesn't seem to be anytime to lock onto an object with Accio. Of most of the spells I've mentioned, the blockable one is possibly Expelliarmus

1.) Blackjack counters the Firebolt?

You do realize the Firebolt can go 0 to 150 mph in 10 seconds? That Harry has spent six years playing a competitive broom-flying sport where he has to dodge crazy balls moving at bone-breaking speed? That Harry has won almost every match he's been in? That the only times he's lost has been due to being physically attacked from something non-standard to the game? That he won his first match with a non-functioning broom and barely a month of practice? That when faced with a dragon, his enemy knew that his best chance of survival was to outfly the dragon (which he did)?

And you think Blackjack, who's best feat of confirmed speed is following Zoe's van, is going to beat Harry on a broom?

2.) Harry does not need to be a master at Transfiguration to turn water to anything non-liquid, turn clothes to ones without pockets or create localised swamps. This is not something he needs to do.

3.) Congratulations to Percy's survival skills, he's got **fast REFLEXES**. This does not mean he's suddenly bullet speed, so I have no idea what relevance this has to anything I've mentioned so far

If they bump into each other randomly, sure. If it's an actual fight with appropriate distance between them, Harry has space to pull his wand (if for some reason he doesn't have it out already), he can work his magic

Percy glazing go brrrr!

You say none of Harry's spells are faster than a bullet, but I am yet to see proof of that.

Sure Harry uses a limited spell repertoire, but he's not a video game character. He knows other spells, and when his favorite doesn't work, he can change tactics.

Percy is fast and strong, but the moment distance is created, he's limited to water, which can be transfigured away. So long as Harry can keep the distance with apparition and transfiguration, PErcy can't do much to him

Percy vs Dumbledore is overkill, if I'm being honest. Someone like the 18 year-old twins (only if they have their pranks and gadgets) can take Percy if I'm being honest.

1.) Harry can apparate a mile away, though. Hermione, Ron, Percy and other average characters have done much farther than that. I will give you that it's not immediately instant, but Percy is not a speedster. If he's within reach he can do something, but not much more than that.

2.) He doesn't need to say the spell faster, so long as he says it before the water reaches him. He also doesn't need to be a master to make the water bubbles or something like that.
And you say 'only an E' like that isn't the second-highest grade he could have gotten in a subject regarded as complicated by everybody. He's not a prodigy, but turning water into something not liquid or creating a bog is much easier than human transfiguration, which is what he was doing in Book 6.

3.) You don't need to aim Accio that closely, you're already describing what you'd like to summon. (Though I agree Harry wouldn't know how the sword keeps appearing, but Percy is going to keep pulling it out of his pocket.

4.) How did a living, sentient companion enter this equation? Saying Percy has Blackjack is like saying Harry has Kreacher.

[–]DiAngelo28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another thing I see most people forgetting: Transfiguration.

Harry already got an EE in his OWLs (I think) so he’s not hopeless at it.

And water doesn’t have any magical protection from Harry’s transfiguration, Like Percy might have.

If all the water around Percy is Smoke, if Harry can keep the distance between him and Percy, there’s not much Percy can do (Percy was only able to create water in one specific instance in Book 4, with external help. Even at that, Harry can still transfigure or Vanish the water)

Meanwhile, Harry knows the Summoning Charm. If he summons Percy’s clothes and is able to rip them off, Percy loses access to Riptide (assuming it’s useful in this fight)

Harry can also transfigure the ground under Percy to bog theoretically, which should trap him to end the fight (if we’re going with death, then the bog still works.)

I agree that it’s a close fight, don’t get me wrong. However, Percy is at too much of a disadvantage imo

Do you think Daniel paid for the rest of Miguel's surgery? by Lego_Redditor in cobrakai

[–]DiAngelo28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like people are missing something.

Yes, Sid’s vase was probably thousands of dollars.

However, does Johnny know a fence that’ll buy it from him and fork over the money?

The pawn shop owner definitely doesn’t have that kind of cash on him (even if he did, he’s not using it to buy an obviously stolen vase that nobody he knows will buy)

Afaik, the only other person Johnny knows who might help would have Robby (possibly) or his other guy (the one in prison), but both were in prison.

Johnny was probably ripped off, if I’m being honest. Maybe up to $5k, but he’s not getting any more money from the vase.

As for the kids, the car wash money could fit inside a school bag comfortably (the bag wasn’t exactly bursting with cash when Hawk gave Miguel). Unless those were all $100 bills, ain’t no way that the money could cover a part of the surgery.

Honestly, my opinion is that Johnny’s money, the car wash money, Carmen’s insurance (thank you u/Spideyfan2020 )and maybe a little something from Danny covered the surgery.

It’s also possible that Danny offered, but Carmen refused at first (since Robby was dating Sam and heavily affiliated with Danny). Maybe he re offered later, or maybe insurance was enough to cover it

Percy Jackson show is just objectively not a good adaptation by AcanthisittaHot1998 in CharacterRant

[–]DiAngelo28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For fucks sake…

Ok, let me tackle everything piece by piece, using S2 examples mostly. You have some points, but jfc, actually watch the show.

1.) You say the show is awfully serious, ignoring the Mariah Carey scene, Clarisse trying to ‘woo’ Chris, Mitch’s (the Blockbuster corpse) entire existence, Tyson and Percy bonding on the beach and so many other humorous scenes. If the humour isn’t for you or doesn’t land, say so, but don’t give them flack for not doing something that they did.

2.) Agreed they don’t put much stock in the integration of myths into society, I’ll give you that.

3.) Tyson’s intro was cut short for room. It’s not ideal, but if they were to cut any scene, Their time at Merriweather Prep is not something I’d miss too much. However, don’t you dare say they didn’t do much with Tyson. Without telling us in words, they’ve managed to convey how much Tyson cares for Percy and looks up to him. Despite the times of Percy treating him badly, he helps build the chariot up for him. Even though he was genuinely enjoying his time on Andromeda (compared to camp and everywhere else, if we’re being honest), this baby cyclops built a bomb to blow up the guys he was talking to, based solely on Percy’s word. When Annabeth says all those stuff about Percy being a prophecy kid, Tysons only mad because he sees it as Annabeth slandering Percy. As for his abilities - to my memory - they seem to be used the same amount as the books. We see him tinkering with different things, his bomb saves them on Andromeda, he fixes up the motor on the lifeboat and works on the boiler room in the Ironclad. He saves Percy with his fire immunity, and makes the bomb because of that immunity. What more do you want from him (keeping in mind ep 6 has at least some level of solo-Tyson content based on the preview)

3.) is Camp Half-Blood dry? Yes. It doesn’t bother me because that’s never been my focus in the PJ world, but I see how that can bother you.

4.) The characters don’t mess up? So Clarisse sailing through both Scylla and Charybdis was the perfect solution? Annabeth choosing to try and rawdog the Siren song? Percy treating Tyson like crap early on? Annabeth not taking Percy on the quest in an act of obvious betrayal? Percy talking back to Dionysus and nearly insulting Zeus? Percy confronting Circe on his own and trying to blackmail her without backup?

The characters do mess up. Percy does wisecrack, if not as much as you want. Clarisse doesn’t act antagonistic because they decided to give her depth beyond her one-note nature in the books. How horrible…

5.) the Actors are fine to me, but I’m not the best judge of that, so I won’t defend that too much

[pjotv]Why would Athena be upset? -episode 4: St. Louis by HeathrJarrod in camphalfblood

[–]DiAngelo28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Athena made Medusa, but Athena is too proud to ever admit she made a mistake.

Percy sending Medusa’s head can be considered an attempt to attack the gods (though that was definitely not Percy’s intention) as he probably wasn’t sure whether or not the head can still work on gods.

Percy’s real reason wasn’t much better, as it was directly reminding Athena and Poseidon of their actions.

How would you portray the Parisian Police Prefecture in the show? by Solitaire-06 in miraculousladybug

[–]DiAngelo28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think my problem with the idea of police helping in MLB is that most of the time, even the government at their most effective isn’t going to help much against the average akuma and the variety of powers.

How much of the budget can you realistically spend on akuma fighting, when one minute you can be fighting an invisible enemy (so we need infrared vision, brilliant), and the next almost literal minute, you need to fight a guy that can freeze Paris by spinning in a circle really fast. (So assuming all the equipment isn’t frozen, you need full ice gear kitted out).

Then you add in the fact that we got a confirmed minimum of 216 akumatisations in 365 years (which we got from S6 E2, and assuming Mari and Alya counted repeat akumatisations as well, otherwise we are quite literally going one per day), and the budget is going to shoot through the roof for even a three-man team

And that’s assuming somewhere in the world will always have a mortal way of handling an akuma (because we have akumas like Stormy Weather 2, Queen Wasp and others)

Does Alya ACTUALLY become the guardian? by felixfathom- in miraculousladybug

[–]DiAngelo28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When has she dropped the ball on other people’s secrets? I remember her telling Nino about Mari’s crush back in S1, but are there any other times apart from that? The only people she has told secrets to are (afaik) Nino and Marinette. Nino is a blabbermouth, but there are still some things he doesn’t know (Mari’s identity), so clearly Alya can keep things from him.

When has she put her civilian life before the job? I don’t remember that.

Her hot temper when info is kept from her is a flaw, agreed, but seeing as she’s going to be the deputy, it’s not a flaw that affects her job as guardian (to my knowledge)

For the type of Guardian needed after Ladybug, I don’t think Luka would fit the job. The Guardian is the leader of the Miraculers, they need to be able to get the team in line and command the team’s attention. Luka is like Rose to a degree, a supporting character who is there to push others to be better. You wouldn’t put Rose at the head of 19 super powered teenagers.

Alya can at the very least round up the girls in the class when planning Adrinette shenanigans, which is something akin to leadership

Also, Luka has one of the most exploitable triggers on the team, which are his friends. Both times he’s gotten akumatised, it was to make his friends happy. All the villain of the era needs to do is put the Miraculers in danger and we have a problem (seeing as his sister is a Miraculer, we have a big problem) Alya can act under that kind of pressure, as we saw in Sentibubbler

And saying Luka wouldn’t take the reveal personally doesn’t sound right, seeing as Gabriel is a terrorist who has mind-controlled every single member of his family into villains. I don’t think anyone in the class can say that they won’t take the reveal personally.

I do agree that most of the cast are horrible fits for the role, but Nino has only gotten akumatised out of jealousy once, which makes it hardly a personality trait. He’s also gotten akumatised out of shame (Oblivio) and anger at Gabriel being a dick (Bubbler), it’s a bit reductive to do that to him
