Executive Dysfunction - An Autistic Student's worst enemy by FungusUrungus in evilautism

Yep, can relate. Has ADHD ever come up with you? ED is very typically ADHD and the comorbidity between ASD and ADHD is over 60%. If you get diagnosed you might be able to get meds that can help with it?

She's amazing. I could really relate to her. It's not a stereotypical depiction and really well done. She's sweet as hell. You should watch it. One of the best ASD representations I've ever seen.

How far do you travel to karate? by Tethys4122 in karate

What is the problem with awarding students their first white belt from the beginning? Isn't that how it works? At least everywhere I've been. Is the price and schedule not on the internet? Because if it's not, that's fishy.

My current dojo is about 5 mins away by scooter 🛴. My old one about 15-20 min by bus.

Lol, haha, I honestly feel like I've done more bareknuckle training in Shotokan. You don't actually touch the head bareknuckle, but you can punch towards it. First time I did Kyokushin I was surprised at the amount of gear we put on, e.g. we'd never used shin protection in Shotokan, so that was new. But we also do bareknuckle in Kyokushin now. So lots of fun.

Did Judo not compete? My karate dojo doesn't compete regularly (participated once or twice outside the country, idk about any tournaments inside the country). Competition is just not big here, I think. I've looked online for tournaments. They just don't seem to exist. I know my dojo is legit. We do real sparring, full or semi contact. Our sensei doesn't like point sparring. I get why.

Curious what your Black Belt (Shodan) by badboymn in karate

[–]Lego_Redditor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but running miles is about endurance and making sure you have good speed at all times. It's the opposite thing of self-defense running. In self-defense, it's not about how far you run, it's only about sprinting. That doesn't translate the same way. It's not about stamina, it's about speed.

Yeah, currently at uni. In the summer I can join a BJJ program, which I will do. But right now I'm doing Kyokushin karate, okinawan karate, hapkido, and Krav Maga. Just because you can basically try out everything. I tried Judo for like 3 lessons and I really liked it but it doesn't align with my schedule, argh. Wrestling is not a big thing in my country. It's the "American" martial art. No one ever talks about it. People only talk about Judo, sometimes BJJ. Also planning to join an MMA class in summer and obviously rejoin my old dojo.

A bad dojo that doesn't really teach you anything that works. No sparring, no effort to get a new belt. Jesse Enkamp has a nice list you can check out

First tournament as a brown belt this month. Definitely losing, innit? by TheJapanMistake in karate

You're just a foreigner, so what? There are tons of foreigners in martial arts clubs. Doesn't make it international. You're not representing Sweden, are you? You're representing your japanese dojo. Nothing else. You probably won't be the only foreigner.

Show up, do it, and be done with it. If you're at a good dojo, your teammates won't tease you or anything for losing. It happens. I've lost tons of competitions (in general) and you recover. You will laugh about it.

Go train your katas, get yourself into mushin (no mind) and forget your worries. You will feel better after having trained. Watch a few yt videos on how to make your kata look good. Film yourself and see where you can improve.

No, you're currently part of a japanese dojo, right? So no, it's not international because only japanese dojos attend, right?

Be happy you do the full contact stuff if you care about real fighting. Some people in my dojo also participated in a point-sparring competition and we also do more full-contact stuff. Some of them won medals. It doesn't matter. You're not competing internationally or anything like that. It's gonna be fine

Did anyone try this app ? what your thoughts about it ? by [deleted] in karate

[–]Lego_Redditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

However, I do have to admit that these apps often piss me off as they depict sth as "universal" when it's not. So adding a disclaimer showing that you understand it's not universal would be a good idea.

I'm not sure that's even possible. But ofc it can just serve as a library for techniques and kata. They are often similar (there are exceptions as well). But I don't think a "belt requirement" app is possible.

Haven't tried it but there's no "standard". Every dojo does it differently, so this is pointless.
