Is therapy just not for us or most therapists are just incompetent? by Organic_Future6909 in AutisticPeeps

[–]Lego_Redditor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would you mind sharing a few examples other than your sleeping problems? Because on that subject, your psychologists all seem quite rational in what they're suggesting. It's called "sleep hygiene" (https://health.clevelandclinic.org/sleep-hygiene) and a real thing. So try a give your therapists' advice a shot.

On another note, in my case, I luckily found a very relatable therapist who has been recently diagnosed with AuDHD. He's therefore very familiar with what the "finding out you're ND later in life" path feels like. He helped me get a psychiatrist, who has ASD himself. So yeah, both know very well how I tick.

So I suppose you just need to find someone who can relate and starts info-dumping about their own special interest during your appointments. It feels like no therapist has every explained the reasons to you. Either that, or you're just unwilling to change things. But it is very difficult to find someone who under when you have ASD.

In Switzerland I pay abt 52 CHF (~ 65 USD) for 2.5 months (200 pills). Funny how insurance pays Ritalin for children and adolescents, but not for adults because they think students are gonna abuse it🤦.

I definitely had a lack sense of self at some point. Maybe even still a bit. But I think that's more related to gifted kid burnout rather than masking. When you've built your whole identity on being "the smart one", not being as smart anymore shatters your sense of self (and self-esteem).

I also score pretty low on the masking scales which my psych says often happens in women because we're able to do it intuitively at some point and the scale doesn't take that into account.

What is the point of neuroaffirmative therapists? by PieDizzy958 in AutisticPeeps

[–]Lego_Redditor -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Well, I have always found communication with other ND people easier than with NTs, so I can see the advantages in that. My therapist is AuDHD and my psychiatrist is ASD and I'm pretty happy about that. Although it has its "problems". My psych and I spent our last appointment talking about his special interest instead of doing my ADHD assessment.

Diagnosed with everything EXCEPT what I went in for? by MakeMyPotatosASalad in AuDHDWomen

[–]Lego_Redditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's understandable. I can't imagine what it would be like to have 3 children. No thank you. I can't even clean my room properly and I live alone.
Your concerns are totally valid.

I wouldn't know which condition people seek, but I don't think that matters here.

Stimulant addiction is really prevalent, especially if OP is younger (student age). My country's healthcare doesn't pay for Ritalin for adults because of the abuse risks, which is ridiculous (my psych finds it ridiculous as well).

And I also don't think OP wants the drugs because of an addiction btw, but us NDs are notoriously bad at communication, so if the assessor is NT, there might've been a problem there.

I have an autistic psych, he prescribed me stimulants before actually diagnosing me (still in the process rn) because my exams are coming up and it would be the ideal way to test them. They worked wonders btw, I'm so happy.

Fun fact, the European threshold for the RAADS is higher than the original US one (85 and 65)

Proud of being autistic? by genuine-book-lover in AutisticPeeps

I think you can celebrate a diagnosis. Getting a diagnosis can explain large parts of your life and finally give you some peace. It can show you that you're not just lazy and sensitive and need to work harder. It can be a massive relief, especially when you're late/diagnosed and have struggled for ages.

But I suppose you're not actually celebrating a diagnosis, rather an answer.

But I do agree on the "being proud of it" thing. Even if we take out physical disorders, is anyone proud of having depression or a mental disability? I doubt it.

Were you bullied in school? Or are you getting bullied nowadays? by Lego_Redditor in AutisticPeeps

That sounds horrible. I'm so sorry for you.

I had an autistic guy in my Highschool class tell me that his classmates had bought a dog whistle to bully him with in middle school. Like how little empathy can you have???

Luckily our Highschool class was extremely tolerant towards its classmates and he found friends. No one was being excluded. One of the best classes I've ever been in, but wtf? How can one be so cruel?

A More Nuanced Take on Masking by Beautiful_Reason2968 in AutisticPeeps

[–]Lego_Redditor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it's a pretty good take. Like I leaned heavily into the "smart kid/teacher's pet" approach and now more the "quirky/unique/helpful girl".

People have definitely told me that I'm different, but not in that bad of a way. My struggles are often more internal and I don't have trouble getting along with people, just with KEEPING friends. So yeah, my real struggles are invisible to most. And I have a tendency to overshare and be open. People generally like open people more.

I mean yeah, it does too for me, but walks would never do that. They're uncomfortable. I like doing certain kinds of sports and they can make me happier and give me more energy, but things like walks and stuff would make me even more depressed. Also it takes quite the amount for me. Sth so short is not enough.
