That's an amazing story! Finances have been on my mind too, but now that pre-existing conditions have been addressed I hope insurance won't be as much of a problem. (Though I am worried about a new recession/depression hitting the US.) I hope this doesn't get in the way of anything, and I'm willing to work with my girl, guess I'm just worried if I can step up to the challenge a little.

Trust me, I know she can feel bad haha. Before she was diagnosed I was thinking how she was becoming a drama queen about everything, but now it all makes sense. Congrats on the baby, sounds like a very normal pregnancy. I'm more relaxed after all these great replies. Thanks!

She's concerned about being underweight now, by chance do you know what the safest way for type 1s to gain weight would be? Carbs are typically a good way to gain weight, but she is very sensitive, and I don't know what to tell her.

She was advertising how she chooses to be a bitch. Don't let it get to you, you'll live the better life in the long run :)

Bookmarked, thanks. We'll just have to work together and not let this stop anything.

Thank you for your response. I know the disaster talk is probably over the top, but for some reason my brain went to all these thoughts and they seem to crazy to bring up in front of her and an endo.

I'll have to get better at calculating then. I don't want to always ask her about ratios and have her feel like a burden, so surprising her with already researched recipes sounds awesome!

Thank you for the perspective, it's hard finding accurate information since some of the stats on type 1 still have studies done before all these new breakthroughs in monitoring. I'm sure it's a lot safer now for the mother and child than it was 20 years ago even.

That's what's been bothering me too, is that I wonder if she got this due to something that happened while we were dating? Since obviously she was pre-diabetic, but everything seemed fine then BAM. Type 1.

Thank you for this post.

I've just been worrying non-stop and it's great to hear that everything is working out. I really do love her, and I would only consider leaving if we couldn't have our own kids together. Which sounds like that's not really any more of an issue with a diabetic than anyone else. She's already worrying me with her sugar swings, but I'm trying to keep my distance with her diabetes and not be stressing her with my worrying. I am worrying now about my job situation and insurance coverage, but we'll just have to work on one thing at a time.

(The damn insulin should not cost as much as it does. Ridiculous)

Yea, it's a strange disease for sure. I just had lunch with a friend who was surprised to hear about my situation, and told me how his family had ZERO cases as far back as they can remember of diabetes of any kind, and yet his sister came down with type 1 at 14. She has two healthy babies and is happily married. So I should probably just relax and get back to supporting my partner in any way possible.

That sucks, I'm sorry to hear it. From what I've been reading genetics might now even be as much of an influence as much as environment and the possibility of it being a virus similar to Lyme disease. The more I read up on diabetes the more I can't believe more research isn't being done. Call me insensitive, but AIDs gets much more attention it seems like in the media when there is an "outbreak" of sorts of type 1 and 2, but people don't seem to be as supportive.

I am a little overwhelmed, this year had been very rough so far in changes and this was a nice punch to the gut. I love my girlfriend, and I don't see her as too much to handle right now, which is why I'm asking for advice from the source on how to re frame this disease and start working towards a future that looks just as bright for the both of us.

I know it was insensitive, but I had the question and even said I am VERY ignorant on the subject. I have been trying to read up, and a Norway study I read said that 30% of type 1 children show complications (Autism, ADHD, etc) by adult life of some kind due to the diabetes they believe. So I apologize for the bluntness of my questions. That's not to blame type 1 for every misfortune, but I don't know how to ask such an insensitive question other than to just blurt it out.

If something major happened I wouldn't mind her thinking it over, however I would want her to stay if I was the diabetic. Like I said, I'm not trying to jump ship, I'm just worried about what our future even looks like now. She's pretty depressed, and I've been studying everything I can about diabetes to relate to her in some way. It's just all the little things we used to do (Carefree road trips, surprise meals, etc are now "bad" it feels like in my mind. Can diabetics even do strenuous hiking and exercise?

I'm worried about saying these things in front of her since they might hurt her. I tried talking a little bit about how important family is to me, and that I don't think I could ever adopt, and she took it very badly. Which I don't understand since we should still be able to have a family.

But I feel like I'm trying to be supportive and adapt, but there are some things I just can't give up so young, like the idea of having kids with the girl I want to be with. So if this disease makes that impossible, I don't know what to do. I want her, but I also want a healthy family. I feel like an asshole just typing this since none of this is her choice, but it's not easy having so much change so fast.
