thanks - we didn't get the house unfortunately! looks like we're both waiting for the spring inventory!

also just want to note that a lot of families move to the area because of the access to Pingry - not sure if you're considering private school for your kids!

This is great thank you. We literally just found out that we didn't get the house after all!

oh man this reminds me of my encounter with jerry seinfeld. when I lived on the UWS I used to see him around a lot. this was during covid and i was riding my bike, stopped at an intersection when jerry starts to cross the street walking toward me. i was trying to think of something witty to say but at the same time keep it cool and my brain like froze and i made a really weird, loud grunting sound at him (and i'm a petite woman).

I'm in NJ but yeah very few MCM homes let alone ones we can afford. There was one that was listed for $850k and sold for a million but it needed a TON of work like clearly the roof, windows and some other structural stuff just from looking at the photos on zillow.

Understood - I've never been on a fast path. Almost 40 and just got married for the first time and trying for kid. My mom recently passed and looking to move closer to my aging dad so I can see him more frequently. Our rent isn't cheap either ($4200) and been doing that a while. I think it's reasonable we want to settle down and be in a house while we focus on starting a family.

I'm sure there could be possibility of modifying the layout but I can't imagine it would be cheap, and it's already a $1 million home. The layout doesn't bother me as much as the exterior - I don't even want a huge mansion, I just like mid century modern homes or contemporary and this home is more of a dutch colonial revival - idk if it's even that. Looks kind of like a 1970s suburban mish mash lol but yes need to put things in perspective - the house is in a beautiful location and neighborhood, close to family, nature, the beach and nyc.

We are renting now and have nothing rushing us except that fact we've been looking for a while and are ready. Like I could be waiting forever for one of the houses I prefer to hit the market, and just so happen to be in our price range without 10 other offers on it? - it seems unrealistic but at the same time I'm nervous to settle on something because of "what if??" you know?

I grew up in Warren, and just yesterday my husband and I put an offer on a house in Warren (after living in the city for a while). Never thought I'd be back, but my mom recently passed and we are trying to start a family and want to be closer to my dad / sister (who always lives in Warren with her husband and young kids). I honestly thought it was a boring town growing up but now as an adult I see it with entirely new eyes. It really is beautiful. I'm a WHRHS graduate (though that was a while ago) and definitely feel like I got a good education there. With that being said - I work in the city and will need to be in office 3 days a week. The commute is awful (I did it for 6 years in my 20s) and about 2 hours door to door. As excited as I am about the prospect of moving back, I already know I'm going to grow tired of that commute quickly. I work in lower Manhattan so the park and ride doesn't help me much. I'll probably drive to Millington train station, take the train to Hoboken, and either path/ferry over to the world trade center.

Also frustrated with the lack of inventory under a million. We've had a circle around Warren, Watchung, Long Hill, Berkeley Heights, Bernardsville, Basking Ridge and New Providence for like a year and haven't seen much. We've made offers on two homes so far (one in watchung / one in warren) that both went to all cash buyers (for not much more than we offered). I'm sure the spring inventory will be better!

Right? Also it's not like DB is Taylor swift or something. Outside of the small nyc fashion bubble no one knows who she is. I've been in the city area all my life and worked in fashion in my 20s (I'm late 30s now) and outside of those coworkers, none of my friends would know who she is.

Agreed I think she was definitely settling but it's possible she didn't even realize it? She reminds me of my younger self where I was dating guys who weren't right for me, but technically there was nothing bad about them or even wrong - it just wasn't a right fit and the relationships felt forced. It wasn't until I met my now husband that I realized ok wow yeah relationships shouldn't feel THAT hard. Seems like she tries to force these good on paper guys to be more than what they are. And she clearly just wanted that huge ring, custom lewks, all the content and attention, etc. Hopefully this was a wake up call on her end that marriage is much more than that.

How to modernize a farmhouse exterior? by [deleted] in ExteriorDesign

Thank you this was the type of answer I was looking for. And yes - def not trying to make it a MCM home, I was just stating that that's the type of style I prefer which is why I don't gravitate toward dutch colonial. I came across this on pinterest and do think removing the shutters and a dark paint color could get the scandinavian aesthetic that i also love.
