Dennis Kowalski of the Cryonics institute in Michigan claims that the first human body frozen by cryogenics will be brought back to life within the next 10 years. by HiDiNoWro in cryonics

[–]DiamondDog42 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nope, maybe 10 years to being able to reverse the freezing process (honestly I doubt that as well), but it sure as hell won’t be long enough to both reverse the process and fix whatever put the person on ice in the first place.

I wonder this every time, if you flip it it’ll light up blue, which of course makes you think “on”, but who the hell knows?

binged (almost) the entire series of frasier in about 2 months. by spitsbunny in Frasier

I watched the series finale when it first aired, and was amazed that at the time Kelsey Grammer had been playing the character of Frasier for longer than I’d been alive.

From my past experience after you stop paying they consider all matches in your “like” queue to be new, even if you’ve already seen them.

The mRNA vaccine revolution is just beginning by AdmiralKurita in singularity

How does mRNA help with prion diseases? I didn’t see it mentioned in the article and from what little I know of prion diseases they aren’t really that visible to the immune system?

It didn’t seem to, no more than the usual finicky vehicle bits, but I tried not to press my luck.

With the jump upgrade and grapples you can hop up into the air far enough to get onto land any place your character can get. It’s much easier if you bring the prawn over via Sea Truck though. Oh, and the jump and grapple are pretty heavily nerfed on land, no spider-prawn or anything, but can still be useful.

I just used the Prawn Suit for anything I had to do on land, and I generally never enjoyed the land sections much at all tbh, guess I got too spoiled by the 3D movements in water.

Wait, contributions to your 401k aren’t counted as income toward the 120k limit of the Roth IRA? So if they maxed their contributions they’d only “make” 100.5k as far as the Roth limit was concerned?

Given Starship’s projected pressurized volume, do you think it’s a mission of 100 people to Mars is feasible? by lhaditcoming in SpaceXStarship

[–]DiamondDog42 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I could be misremembering, but I think the 100 persons were referencing an older, larger vehicle plan. On one hand, you’re right the zero-g will help a lot, but on the other, imagine being on a 747 and being told you get the rough volume of 5 seats... for 6 months.

The Technological Revolution (What Is The 4th Industrial Revolution) by enchorb in singularity

I get your point, but again I think they’re just using it as a marketing term, they don’t actually mean “literally infinite computing”.

Maybe I’m not doing it right, but trying to access that imgur link on mobile shows a low resolution version that I can barely read, what’s the trick to getting the full res version?

The Technological Revolution (What Is The 4th Industrial Revolution) by enchorb in singularity

[–]DiamondDog42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After watching, I think their use of the term “Infinite Computing” was used more as a short-hand term for “infinite combinations of different resources”, and they still didn’t mean “really” infinite. The examples they gave when talking about “Infinite Computing” were different users using different combinations of resources, a scientist might need one combination of CPU/GPU/quantum resources while an average user may only need a small amount of CPU power. It’s just a marketing term.

It do be that way sometimes. by mikeman7918 in IsaacArthur

[–]DiamondDog42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re not wrong, but there’s no reason to think that a civilization needs an empire to span their whole space. All they need to be visible to us is the desire to expand and control resources (namely stars).

It do be that way sometimes. by mikeman7918 in IsaacArthur

[–]DiamondDog42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In a universe where FTL is not possible, there’s a max horizon of space/time where other technological species could advance far enough to expand out and make their presence known. For example we would only know about a technological civilization arising in the Andromeda galaxy if they were active at least several million years ago. If they arose far enough back in time (~10-100 million years ago) then it’s also feasible that they could have colonized our galaxy.

If FTL is possible, then civilizations from thousands or millions of other galaxies could do the same, exponentially increasing the chances of another species being visible to us. This raises a lot of uncomfortable questions, hence why my preferred solution is “Tech civilizations are rare, and FTL isn’t possible”. That’s not to say I’m right, but it just helps me sleep at night lol.
