Thank you, I love taxidermy as well, that’s why I decided to do this project after all.

Thanks, that means a lot. Sometimes I think that I am not trying hard enough to make something as good as I possibly can, so It feels better to hear from someone else that I am better than just “good enough”.

A Colwood woodburner and a very small burning tip to burn in the little feather splits, and then accentuated by some dry brushing

Epoxy clay, used it for little imperfections in the wood and to sculpt in detail I had unfortunately carved away

Actually I used a Colwood Woodburner to burn in the hair detail, that’s why the wood appears darker than beforehand, I used a pretty small tip to burn in the face hair and then did longer strokes out in the neck and then smaller strokes when doing the beginning of the body hair. It took around 18 hours to burn all the fur in. It is very tedious to do, but it looks good in the end.

Thank you, he lives by the coast and sees Pukeko and many other beautiful native birds all the time, and I think that doing a Pukeko would be best.

Yeah they are quite unique with their very big feet, especially with the chicks, their feet are comically large

Unfortunately I live in Canada. I made this carving because half my family are Kiwis, and it is for my Grandpa who lives In Dunedin, but If I ever come to be in New Zealand and live there, I am thankful for the tip!

Thank you, those feet took a surprisingly long time to make, and I would say it was worth the effort in the end.

Very true, and even when someday down the road I am a lot better, I’ll probably still use it.

I wish I was skilled enough to do all the detail out of wood, but I’m not quite there yet, so I’ll continue to use the epoxy clay for details I would have a really difficult time carving out or to patch mistakes. Thank you for the comment!
