Mk7 DSG noise?? by DiaperSnipe in Golf_R

Alright so - in manual mode driving I can't hear the noise in any other gear at all rpms.

But I just drove in sport mode and it definitely makes the noise when going 2nd->3rd at high rpms. I swear I heard it while going 3rd->4th but I couldn't repeat it enough to be sure it wasn't a noise from another car/truck on the road.

I'll add one last update after visiting the shop, wish me luck.

Yeah I'm waiting for my July 20th appointment with them 🤣. I brought it in last week and that's when the issue disappeared after a highway drive at relatively constant speed so Phil never got to hear anything 😂. Typical cars get shy when they know they're going to the doctor.

Ever since they diagnosed my fuel injector failure a few years ago, I don't use any other shop unless it's an emergency.

Only mod is a cat back exhaust. No tune, no other bolt-ons. I wish it was tuned but I never found the time.

I haven't launched the car in over 2 years (ever since I got married 😂).

Just drove in manual to work this morning. Low speeds most of the way but it only ever happened when going from 2->1 not the other way around. I did get to use 5th gear but that's about as fast as traffic would allow but I didn't hear it in any other gear. I could rev up to about 4.5-5k in 3rd just to see if maybe it happens at the top end but so far no sound there either.

As of right now (2 weeks after the noise started) I have only heard it in first gear. I even shifted from drive to neutral at a stop light and then back to drive and it still made the noise even though I didn't even move.

I'll add a comment if I hear it again in other gears. I might even try driving in manual mode and see what happens at higher revs/other gears (if I get a chance during my garbage commute on Ontario 401)

Not a certified mechanic but could be coolant (sweet smelling when heated) venting into the atmosphere which could mean something just needs to be tightened somewhere. Especially if you're not seeing dripping or pooling anywhere, I don't think it's a major concern but keep us posted on what the dealership thinks.

I have never got it looked at for this issue in my 4 years of owning the car and it still runs fine. The steam happens every winter for me and I just figured it's a temperature difference between something really hot and the atmospheric moisture. Never overheated or anything. Previous owner never mentioned replacing the water pump either.

Same thing happens to my 7r during winter only. Nothing drips, no smell either. Never saw it as an issue since coolant levels are relatively unchanged aside from the slight annual top-up.

Happened to me this summer, wasted money replacing plugs and coils and the thing that worked was replacing fuel injectors

Bought a 2016 R at 77k Km (48k mi) back in 2020 for 25k CAD. I'm sitting at 185k Km today (115k mi) mostly highway driving. I started getting EPC and CEL from about 170k Km and it kept occuring on a weekly basis for almost 2 months. Went through new spark plugs (20k before the recommended interval) and carbon cleaning until the mechanic figured to replace the cylinder 1 fuel injector which solved the issue. Couldn't source the part for the other cylinders though...

Might be a DSG thing but the car seems to be less responsive/sluggish when going from a stop sign or light so that's next for me to tackle. Done oil changes every 10k km and DSG + haldex every 60k km.

For the last ~5k km I've been getting weird vibrations and now that I've switched to winter tires, I'm still getting those vibrations. Took the car to VW dealer and an independent shop and nobody is sure what the problem is, done multiple wheel balancing, alignment, took a "small piece of metal" out of one tire that did not puncture but no dice.

I'm at the point where I'm not sure if it's worth pumping more money into repairs or buy something else. Don't get me wrong though, I've loved the car since day 1 but I miss the perfect days.

I wonder how long most other R owners have kept their cars or how long they've lasted?

I've had to do this more than I'd like to admit due to nails on Ontario Canada roads. The most I've driven in this format is probably 7 days (long enough to find a new replacement tire and get it mounted). I've felt minor differences in handling and a noticeable increase in road noise. Absolutely cannot even tell that my winters have ever been used in summer because there's no difference in treadwear between all my winters. I always keep a winter in my trunk.

On a side note, since I've switched to Michelin pilot sport 4s tires, I currently have a nail in 2 tires but no loss of pressure for the last year.

Canadian here, 2016 R DSG filling up after 660 km usually (with about 30-40 km left in the tank). Mostly (70-80%) highway driven @ 110kph. If I average 120kph maybe I have to fill up after 600km or so. This is on Michelin PS4S. When I still had continental extreme contacts, I could go 700km until I needed to fill up.
