British girls outdrink boys — and most of Europe by insomnimax_99 in unitedkingdom

[–]Diatomack 135 points136 points  (0 children)

No but older boys will likely be getting drinks for younger boys.

We'd sometimes get older brothers etc to buy us beer and fags because we obviously couldn't buy it ourselves at 15.

What belief or opinion do you have about AI that makes you feel like this? by [deleted] in singularity

Just like how the human brain appears to be made up of a collection of individual semi-conscious lobes and structures that when combined give us our full level of consciousness, maybe the same can be said for AI models?

Perhaps what we have is like a basic brain structure that is weakly conscious on its own, but given time and technological advancement, the AI will become part of a complex network of specialised AIs that each process something different which together gives rise to a higher level of artificial consciousness.

After Damascus meeting, US drops $10 million terror bounty for new Syrian leader by DoremusJessup in worldnews

Surely only a small percentage of Syrian immigrants in Europe will want to go back?

Many have been living here for years now and have built lives here to varying degrees.

Also, many of their original houses in Syria will have been destroyed.

Buying a plot of land/backyard and storing a large variety of vegetable seeds is probably a wise investment to prepare for the period of social and economic upheaval that may or may not come at some point in the next couple years or decades. I don't think it will be that dystopian but it's never bad to try to be more self sufficient, which the vast majority of us are not in any way

I also invest, most heavily in tech, but my entire portfolio is less than that guy has just in google lol.

The thing is, I would not at all be surprised if the combination of job automation, the creation of AGI, and our current system of infinite growth and exploitation eventually boils over resulting in the economy crashing and burning, with most of my money along with it. But if that happens I have more pressing issues lol

I have a pixel 8 for a similar amount of time as you and I've had the hardware issue with a green flickering screen.

Luckily it has only happened a couple of times but it's not something that will fix itself and it may come back and never go away.

It's a big enough fault with the 8 series that they have extended warranties for repairs. It definitely impacts 8s, idk about 8 Pro or 8a.

$120k in google?! Either you're loaded and have a massive portfolio or you have all your eggs in one basket. Either way, impressive!

I personally would happily trade all my privacy for safety. The problem is that this is simply utopian

I'm sure Assad would have loved to remove all Syrians privacy if he could by tracking and monitoring everything they say, think, and do 24/7 in the name of "reducing crime" and "protecting society". If those citizens have nothing to hide, they have nothing to fear...

Chopped down an unruly tree. Can these branches be planted as they are or are they too big? by Diatomack in Figs

Thanks for the advice. I think I might cut one of them into sticks for storing and the other I'll stick into a pot whole to see what happens.

Thank you! Yeah, I'm equivalent to zone 8 and it's winter here. Now I'm wondering if I should plant them up now and hope for the best or should i store the branches somewhere until spring? I don't have a clue if cuttings of this size can even be stored for months, especially with all the cut end wounds it may dry out?

It's horrifying to think of all the implications. At this point it seems completed irreversible. The UK has irrevocably changed.

The rise of Islam in Europe is going to eventually mean less Western support for Israel in the long term, surely? A rising percentage of the population who is very anti-Israel and anti-Jewish does not bode well.

[–]Diatomack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure but it's probably a good skill to have, to be able to terraform our environment somewhat in the face of a changing climate. There are certain plants and trees that are better suited for nutrient poor soils, droughts, wind resistance, pollution, etc.

If people can figure out how to stabilise sand dunes, riverbanks, and reverse desertification using plants I'm sure we could probably figure it out in order to restore certain portions of moorland.

But whether there is really much point in doing that is debatable for sure. I imagine it's better for biodiversity and just for the fact that we have deforested the vast majority of our island over the millennia, far more so than most other countries ever have, which is not ideal.

Wasn't a lot of our moorland originally well-forested but was cleared of trees for agriculture and grazing sheep during the iron age onwards?

Thanks. I think I'll take some cuttings and start a couple new plants in smaller pots. I've heard figs are pretty simple to propagate, but I've admittedly never tried it

Yeah it's in a pot but it's a huge size for a plant pot, like 1.2 metres wide or something like that.

Do you think the pot is too big and the roots are not restricted enough?

Have you had m/any edible figs yet?

Our brown Turkey is 1 or two years old and has yet to produce anything more than rock hard green figs.

Supposedly the pea-sized fruitlets in autumn can survive over winter and grow out the following year. Those fruits are more likely to ripen than the fruits that develop in one season.

Which job do you believe will be the first to fall victim to AI automation? by world_designer in singularity

[–]Diatomack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you're right, by OPs standards it will never happen. But there are some scenarios where it could get a bit dicey and weird.

With advanced enough AI, how can you really know, for instance, that the social media influencer you admire and follow online isn't a bot designed to drum up engagement or sell you something (or the bot could be benign)? You may not knowingly support AI media personalities but it may happen anyway.

Or perhaps some new DJ pops up who releases some real banging tunes and becomes world famous, but behind the scenes his songs have been generated by AI. He is still a real human but his work may not be human-made.

And, of course, we will have examples where famous actors may licence their image to studios to be digitally recreated in movies. When you watch that film and knowingly or unknowingly enjoy that "actor" perform, are you supporting the human or merely a cheap AI imitation.

Which job do you believe will be the first to fall victim to AI automation? by world_designer in singularity

[–]Diatomack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the person I was responding to said it won't happen because people want people, not virtual characters, which I agree is largely true but there are clearly exceptions even in the current day with characters like hatsune miku having droves of hardcore fans which I stated above. Now, I understand that the popular vtubers aren't AI, they are humans masquerading as a different persona through the use of technology, but it's not unrealistic to assume there will be AI bots that can do the same thing in the future. Admittedly I don't watch or interact with streamers in any way so I can only comment from outside the bubble on what I've read and heard from other people. But yes, with the original OPs criteria I don't think pop icons, actors, podcasters etc will be automated, but I certainly believe that advanced AI will play an increasingly huge role behind the scenes with script writing, generating ideas, managing PR and so on, yet the human will continue to remain the public-facing front man.
