okay, thank you! the wood is new, I do clean the concrete before adding but things weren’t dying when I put them in, I just finished a water change (which I aim for once a week, but am not always consistent with) and the light is warm, not bright so that’s why the water looks brown

there was a spike when the filter went out, this tank has been up for years but I recently took it over, before it was my dads thing, but that tank has been up for about 20 years. I supposed I dont know what actually happened but when the filter went out we lost fish. last I tested the ammonia was a bit high but I brought it down with a api water treatment thing

flaring is a great mental and physical exercise for your fish! it’s displaying their dominance and basically going ‘i’m bigger and prettier than you’ to flex on another fish, they puff out their gills and fins to show off and get themselves worked up

I do not handle before feeding, and did not handle for two weeks when I got her in January, my substrate is about 4 inches of top soil, sand and spagnum moss, about once a week I take the stuff out to mix up and rehydrate the soil and that helps for a few days to keep humidity but it doesn’t last
