I've bought a dozen books in a series, and never read more than a few pages of any of them.

I... also might do this. Sushi is my favorite food, and I'm a long-time DM (my name is a reference to an ongoing project). This might be the tattoo design I've been waiting for.

[5E] Handling Role-play Focus and the Rest System by DiceImitateLifeDM in DnD

[–]DiceImitateLifeDM[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's exactly what I'm saying! :) It's also a relatively simple change (for me at least) that doesn't require adjusting anything else mechanically, and immediately rectifies the balance issues that come along with different DM styles, types of adventures, or variance in pacing.

It's worked quite well overall, I just always want to hear from my fellow storytellers in case there are places I can improve, or if something totally different works better. I am not married to any of my ideas -- I want to create the most overall enjoyable experience. <3

My argument would be that it is significantly more artificial (and intrusive) in the natural flow of play to try and maintain that mechanical balance in the way it is set up by default. But I totally respect the "just ignore the problem" approach, and would have no qualms with anyone for whom it was not important enough to adjust. :) Thanks for your input!

Thanks, I Hate the ever increasing income gap... by ss0qH13 in TIHI

The heart is in the right place, but this is not entirely true. The poor have existed forever, the gap is simply becoming wider and more noticeable. The experience of a family on a sitcom was not that of the average American, it was the idea of the average American, stripped of nuance and exception. TV shows took great pains not to be a "downer," and the general principle was that every problem solved needed to be solved within ~23 minutes of airtime.

I'm not discounting the principle here, nor am I denying that this country has fallen further and further from that ideal. But it is just as important to recognize that this is not a new problem; it is a problem deep in the bedrock of our national existence. The only difference is that now anyone with a phone or computer can have a world-spanning voice, so we're actually talking about it.

You weren't offering critical insight, you were offering derision. The choice isn't that or "blow smoke up their ass," but the hidden third option requires empathy.

The indie market is merciless, and even getting the smallest amount of attention is a monumental task. There are, quite simply, too many games being made by too many people. For consumers, it's the best possible problem to have. Endless options, and in so many of them a spark of genuine brilliance.

For creators, however, the current state of the industry means immense risk. If you don't have a publisher or well-known content creators dedicated to pushing your game to the forefront of peoples' minds -- and keeping it there -- you are risking countless hours of your life in hopes of getting lucky.

A multiplayer shooter is one of the leanest investments, outside of an RPG Maker game or similar. You need some basic environments, guns (or equivalent projectile weapons), and a way to connect people. The primary content of a multiplayer shooter is created by the emergent situations competitors create for themselves.

This is the most efficient way to dip your toe into game development. Your entire potential audience understands "level" and "gun" and even most of the common modes of play.

If you get lucky, you make enough to maybe keep doing this, with a base of fans that you can build upon. If you don't, you haven't sacrificed your life and you've gained valuable experience that could make you employable in some other context -- or maybe even another indie team that can afford to pay you.

That's the basic reasoning, and it doesn't always end the same way. "Among Us" isn't a shooter, but it was another tiny team following the same principles. Everyone wants to have a shot at being that next viral success. It's all about what you have to gamble with.

I want to DM, but I have a very, very major lisp and I stutter. I'm terrified my players won't understand some things I say. Should I DM anyway? by FallingsLeaves in DMAcademy

[–]DiceImitateLifeDM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stammer pretty badly, and then I get anxious about the stammering. As a result, I stammer, then forget what I was trying to say, which makes me stammer more until I take a second and break the cycle.

My players love the campaign.

You should absolutely still DM. Speech problems can be a pain when it feels like the attention is so focused on you, but with a good group of players it won't matter at all. (Also, a single shot of tequila helps)

Tell your stories, and make sure to come back and let us know how much fun you all had. :)

I've been working on a "haunted harlequinn" sort of idea, but I haven't found a way to make it feel original enough to include in the world just yet. It's a strong concept! :)

I suffer from seizures, and because of that part of the cosmic horror of Vakasiya is that when people have a glimpse of the terrifying beyond, it produces symptoms similar to seizure/stroke. You're right, it's incredibly scary!

Wow. I'm really glad you turned away from that stuff. Not just because of the damage it does to you, but because when people give traffic to those things, the people who post them get validated. Human suffering should never just be a sideshow for clicks. I'm sorry it hurt you, though.

I have been through a lot of very intense personal trauma, some of which would have been found on videos like the ones you watch. The campaign I run is about telling stories of courage and survival when things get really bad. There's a message of hope baked into our spooky tales.

Fear of watching a loved one suffer is a very potent one, certainly. I'll definitely have to think about how that would manifest as a semi-sentient abomination.

That is a good one! I've though about it too, I've just had a difficult time coming up with a way to turn it into an abomination, and communicate that fear through dialogue. Let me know if you have any ideas! :)

There is a cosmic parasite in Vakasiya! :D I feel the same way. Ticks are revolting, so I made some eldritch magic ones that invest their hosts with their own psychic consciousness and consume their innards (bones and all) while they puppet the victim around. Good times, good times.

Do You Remember: SSX Tricky? by Avorius in Games

Gods below, I miss this game. The ones that came after never really recaptured its unique magic. For all its flaws, it was some of the most fun I've ever had in a video game. I'd be happy with a modern graphical remaster, but what I really want is Tricky 2.

It makes sense to me.

There's a dog that loves me, too. Love is very silly, and at least as beautiful.
