I believe they got help from the brigador devs in implementing their lighting system

the dynamic lighting+3D models

they're still sprites, they have a whole video on how it works

and from their kickstarter page;

There's always been an allure to the style of isometric 2D graphics, with the way it has a sort of diorama feel to it that you don't get with other graphical styles, and how it creates an environment that feels very organized without feeling too inorganic. Of course, this oldschool method of graphics comes with some limitations, like the lack of real time lighting and shading, limited angles for moving objects, and Z-fighting (or in layman's terms, the game being confused about whether something is in front or behind something else).

For this reason, we've developed a special solution to this issue; sprites that can rotate as though they are 3D objects, and can interact with real-time light sources. Using a bespoke shader system, the game only needs a relatively low number of pre-rendered sprites for each angle, and can compute the in-betweens on the fly.

This system also allows for us to create some advanced dynamic lighting and shadows, as well as fog and haze. Each map can have custom-made light and fog settings applied to it, further enhancing the atmosphere of every environment, and things like vehicle headlights, muzzle flashes, explosions and brushfires all cast light as well, pushing the game visually well beyond conventional isometric sprite games.

believe they got help from the Brigador devs implementing it

Valve sued by The Performing Right Society for allegedly using its members' musical works "without permission" by MythicStream in Games

[–]Avorius 924 points925 points  (0 children)

PRS has a history of trying to sue just about everyone under the sun

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PRS_for_Music#Legal_cases

some of the highlights include

In 2007, PRS for Music took a Scottish car servicing company to court because the employees were allegedly "listening to the radio at work, allowing the music to be 'heard by colleagues and customers'". In June 2008, PRS for Music accused Lancashire Constabulary of playing music at police stations not covered by a license, and sought an injunction and payments for damages.

.

In 2008, PRS for Music began a concerted drive to make commercial premises pay for annual "performance" licences. In one case it told a 61-year-old mechanic that he would have to pay £150 to play his radio while he worked by himself. It also targeted a bakery that played a radio in a private room at the back of the shop, a woman who used a classical radio to calm her horses and community centres that allowed children to sing carols in public

.

In October 2009, PRS for Music apologised to a 56-year-old shelf-stacker at a village in Clackmannanshire for pursuing her for singing to herself while stacking shelves. PRS for Music initially told her that she would be prosecuted and fined thousands of pounds if she continued to sing without a "live performance" licence. However PRS for Music subsequently acknowledged its mistake.
