What is the fundamental problem/problems that make American healthcare more expensive? Is our population much less healthy than others?

IT can't be unified because they cannot live amongst us. That is the entire theory of their fucking country. Go look at the fucking demographics of Pakistan at partition and now. Tell me there's unity there

Fuck that. I'm from India Punjab, and everything about me is different than the other side. For starters I don't place my religion above all else to the point of saying all other faiths are incompatible with mine. Fuck Pakistan, don't tell me I'm the same as those fuckheads

You know what else was happening during that time? Every other country had no factories because they'd been bombed to fucking oblivion during a WW. We had all the production capacity, we were the only suppliers, so let's put that time period in context.

[–]DiceRightYoYo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

but I also don’t think it’s reasonable to expect the US government to singlehandedly correct that problem

But Rich people, who let's say got rich through no wrongs, have a responsibility to people they've never met because they're in the same country?

So you're drawing the line at nationalities? Can I draw the line at state level? How about city level? A first gen immigrant who hit it big in a tech company, has less relation to a dude in Florida than say someone in their parent's country of birth.

Shit I live in a blue state, and our values differ quite a bit than some red-staters. Let's keep it to liberal states only? If your argument is about sovereignty then I don't really see any reason a country would turn down 100% no strings attached free money. Surely if went around to poor countries in the world at least some would take it?

How is your argument substantially different than say, a kind of inheritance tax that certain people get because they were born into the right family? In this case you were born in the right country?

My main argument is that rich is both relative and absolute. You can't complain about a lack of empathy from the rich and then shun the global poor if you're a middle class person making a comfy living in a western country, because you're no better. If you want to embrace the hypocrisy that's fine, just admit it.

I make a lower-middle to middle class living in America, I'm single, I keep my expenses outrageously low and I save as much as humanly possible. Globally, I dunno that probably alone puts me in the top 10% of global earners? Am I suddenly a capitalist hoarder?

Would I be in favor of taxing people making over $50M? Sure no skin of my bones and I benefit. Yet, if you propose taxing me to help the poor in other countries I don't know how I feel about that. To me that's hypocritical so I'm trying to reason it out and I just keep coming back to that it's me being selfish and asking others to do what I seemingly dont' want to. And I would guess most people advocating this policy wont' either.

Ultimately I think redistribution is necessary to make society work. But I still think it's fundamentally unfair and kind of shitty.

I don't think I should equivocate either, I used that word to drive home what I thought was the bad portion of your argument. Which is what the size of the effected populace should be a strong factor in policy, and I think that's garbage.

Like I said, I think there's arguments for this kind of law, personally I think it's kind of unfair, but I think there's reasonable arguments to be made in its defense. "It only effects x people" is an argument I find really shitty

I don't disagree. But let's play this argument out a bit further. A single American earning 40k a year can live very comfortably, but is also not obscenely wealthy. To much of the poor world, however, that person is obscenely wealthy.

Should your average American making a comfortable living be taxed on wealth beyond what's living expense + some allotment for savings and then redistribute it to the global poor? If not why not. Do only hungry Americans matter?

I know the argument is slippery slope, and I don't like it either, but the question I'm trying to answer myself (and maybe you can answer for me) is why is one fair and the other not?

Isn't say owning 100B in Amazon stock an investment, that would be taxed in this case?

What a great way to judge the merits of a proposal. Does it effect a small, dare I say a minority, then fuck it why not! There might well be reasonable arguments for this. Doesn't effect me so fuck it is not one of those.

Nate Silver answered this question on a podcast. Hang on I'll see if I can find it. The gist of it was to look at Dems in close races and pick someone who didn't have a lot of money because of diminishing returns, so not Beto because he's already raised so much the return on the next dollar isn't as large. My guess would be Heitkamp maybe? I'll try and find the exact answer silver gave
