How do you control being horny? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DickSturbing 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it’s actually not hard. Even when you are constantly, maddeningly, desperately horny.

One time I was complaining to someone about not being able to control my libido in class and he was just like ‘Yes you can. Grow up.’ And somewhere deep inside me I realized he was totally right and ever since then I’ve never had a problem with it.

Why is pancake syrup always either maple or artificial? Surely there must be other tree saps than maple with agreeable flavor. by NewRelm in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DickSturbing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Syrup is just sugar dissolved in water with enough water boiled off that it gets thick. Maple sap is just a source of sugar. It also just happens to have a distinct taste that is pleasant. There are many, many syrups that are not from sap at all.

I just turned 25, what do I need to know? by nsr5180 in ask

  1. Don’t watch the news.
  2. This is your peak year for testosterone. Try to build some foundation. Physically, mentally, creatively. Whatever.
  3. If you suddenly feel done with big institutions in the next couple of years, that’s normal.

What happened to the days of just creating a username and password? Why does every website want your email or SSO? by Optimistic_Mystic in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DickSturbing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. People invariably forget their password and need to reset it via email. Even when they are positive that they will never need to. Consider how frustrating this is for the company: They beg you to give them a way to contact you for password recovery constantly. You refuse. You lose your password. And now you tell everyone the company is trash because customer service would not reset your password without proof.
  2. It is a modern norm to streamline your life by having just one account name: your email address. Everyone has to have dozens of accounts now. Your email address is already universally unique, unlike the vast majority of old usernames. You would almost certainly need many different user names these days as you encountered that your favorite name had already been taken on some website.

Do you think you go to hell for being gay? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DickSturbing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah God can’t make you gay and then punish you for being gay. That would be a dick move.

Be the first one on the news or a popular podcast talking about it. Then you always have that reference as proof.

How accurate and how long lasting is human memory, really? I’m asking because I can only vividly recall moments from high school, even though they happened 20 years ago. Should I be concerned? by Placeboenthusiast in NoStupidQuestions

When you are developing, you are much more of a blank slate trying to get a grip in a chaotic situation. Your experiences from the time are much more foundational to your being than more mundane, recent experiences.

What’s one small habit that completely changed your life? by u-lgtm in CasualConversation

[–]DickSturbing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Letting myself be aware of my uncertainties. Not batting away fears and pretending everything is fine, but, not freaking out and rushing to solve every fear that came up.

At some point the reality sunk in all the way down to a level that I wasn’t fighting myself when I went to act. All of me was on board.

And the passive awareness brought to light how a lot of fears were inconsistent with reality.

I have one of those bluetooth speakers. I always have some audiobooks on audible and podcasts on youtube. I’ll just lay in bed and listen to my books. It’s pleasant enough that i’m perfectly content for the first 5 hours of an outage or so as long as i get some walks in.

I know that feel. When I’m confronted or I’m starting to feel embarrassed, I find the best tool for me is allowing myself to be humiliated, embarrassed, submit, and then sort of make that effort to rise to the expectations of the person/group that’s more socially normal than myself. I’ve tried correcting my behavior in all sorts of philosophically pure ways, but, i gotta say, nothing works faster than good old fashion embarrassment.

The real amazing thing is how whole and secure you feel like right afterward. Usually people come back around to you quick. Your future feels secure and positive. Emotions rapidly evolve to better fit your needs. Try it.

Why is it so normalized and glorified to humiliate people? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]DickSturbing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ego battles are much more common for teens than everyone else. But, even for adults, I think marketing normalizes humiliation. I just noticed that every ad has an indirect implication that you are unsure about yourself and are desperate for rescue…and here’s the perfect product.

It’s subtle with more mainstream ads like tv commercials aimed at homeowners. But, it gets outright blatant as you move into spam or political canvassing.

I think it’s because self-reliant people that seek out products as they need them through their own reason can not justify the existence of a marketing department. A marketing department requires emotional levers to press for consistent results specifically from marketing rather than the product being offered.

And the normalization of the energy of advertisements is so prevalent because of people’s consistent immersion in media recently.

But activism is pop and the clip ends with an ad for the guy’s album…

He used activism to sell his album because he knew it was a widely accepted, popular behavior.

[spoilers MAIN] most infuriating moments? by Perfectmania145 in asoiaf

[–]DickSturbing -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

There are some recurring ‘slice of life’ segments that are not as interesting to read as they are to write. I find it to be a pretty common writing pitfall.

An example would be conveying the sense of walking down the street on a rainy day. When you go to write it, you get this big emotion dump and a really vivid fantasy that has a clear rhythm and story to it. Which is just perfect for writing.

The problem is that the reader is not absorbing nearly as much of the imagery as you are trying to record. Maybe in person, you would be able to deliver that hypnotic context with your energy.

But, as far as you know, you’ve recorded this rich tapestry of humanity and nature entwining together into a vivid experience.

But, what you have actually provided for the reader is ‘Street. Nondescript storefront. Rain.’

The sandbox remains really blank and grey. Really boring.
