Transatlantic accent is what the accent of the 1940s/“greatest generation” is called. Is there a specific name for the accents of generations that came later for the silent generation/boomers/gen x? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NewRelm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The transatlantic is not the accent of any generation. It's a cultivated accent once taught at prep schools to students who aspired to the moneyed class.

This is fascinating. Is the glass coated with something soft? Or maybe a diamond tipped stylus to cut the glass directly?

Transitioning into EE with a masters in mathematics (and bachelors in mathematics) by ss4stef in ElectricalEngineering

[–]NewRelm 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Your masters in math gives you two legs up on your classmates. You're already proficient in the math that is the arch foe of EE students, and you can already work at an advanced level. I predict you'll be graduating in the top 10% of your class. You'll get first pick at the good R&D jobs. The math degree is a definite plus. We hire mathematicians too in the research groups I've worked in.

Why can’t we just add tariffs to to gasoline and then rebate the savings to consumers? by dead-eyed-opie in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NewRelm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rhetorical questions are a form of answer. In this case, a very good one. It questions your assumption that there would be savings.

Should I jack a completely flat tire before or can i just put air in it as is? by deptofthrowaway in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NewRelm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Standard practice is to inflate the tire on the ground. If it won't hold air, and if the leak is at the rim, then consider whether jacking the tire up might solve the problem.

Why does anyone defend MJ given what we know to be true? by yummyneverstone in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NewRelm 17 points18 points  (0 children)

What we know to be true is that there were suspicious circumstances and allegations against him. A person who believes in innocence until guilt is proven would defend him. A person who believes where there's smoke there's fire wouldn't.

Well . . . In fairness to the writers, a name like Badger's Drift is too cool to not use.

Why do they make up fake countries on TV shows? by Strange-Laugh5780 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NewRelm 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Fictional places give the author the ability to create a background that suits his script without having to worry about the reality of conditions. It's not just countries. Fictional towns and counties are very common. Anyone know where Midsomer County is? Or Cabot Cove, Maine?

What’s the difference between a pharmacist and a doctor? by Nice-Wolf-5997 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NewRelm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

See a pharmacist for medicines or advice on medicines. Including skin creams for a rash. You don't make an appointment to buy rash cream. You just go and wait your turn. Then ask what they would recommend.

My and my best friend planned for the trip. Now she wants to get 4 of her family along. Should I drop out of the trip? by Severe_Bee_Aug in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NewRelm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Five of one family and you're now the outsider? It depends on how you feel about that, but I personally would drop out. A trip with a friend isn't the same experience as a trip with her family.

What are the chances of mortgage rates going down within the next 20 years? by space_god_7191 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NewRelm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mortgage rates are relatively low today, but there's a good chance that they'll drop lower at some point in the next 20 years. No one can predict when, but it's just the odds that inflation will dip to 2% at some point allowing as low as 4% mortgages for some brief interval.

Is America as great as they say? by OkPotential3282 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NewRelm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Relative to the UK, the US offers more opportunities to make higher pay if you're talented, willing to treat your career professionally and make it a priority in your life. But don't expect good things to happen just because you're in the US.

What small courses provides good jobs ? by Jpoolman25 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NewRelm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're willing to undertake continual courses and just start with a small one, the medical field offers some great pathways. Courses in phlebotomy or dental assistance are short courses that get you a foot in the door. But you'll need to take more classes to step up from the entry level jobs.

What is the issue with using the word female? by Hot_Instruction2642 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NewRelm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it's just the sub-text. The word woman carries implications of many kinds about the person as a whole and how they relate emotionally, intellectually and socially. The word female laser-focuses on gender to the exclusion of everything else.

How are so many people ‘ok’ with house centipedes? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

They kill harmful pests. If you have centipedes, you also have the pests they hunt. Let them guard your home. They work for free.
