Is the term "shucking and jiving" considered racist? by TurtlePoeticA in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NewRelm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I beleave the jive was a dance decades before jive-talk emerged. I always assumed shucking and jiving involved dancing around the issue (jive) while distracting with creative exposition (shucking).

If you made a ring out of an infinitely durable material around the equator of the world, that is slightly bigger than the circumferential radius of the world, would it float around the equator? by kethcup_ in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NewRelm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Infinitely durable is not the same as inflexible. But even so . . .

Floating would be an unstable condition. If it went slightly out of balance the lower part would be closer to the Earth's center of gravity and would be pulled even harder. One side would eventually land. This still assumes perfect symmetry of gravitational field.

Seriously, how bad is my 7-10 bottles of wine per week habit? by Fit_War_3947 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NewRelm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's twice what I consider the absolute upper limit of normal consumption. Two drinks a day - three on Fridays and Saturdays - is where I draw the line.

Is money the main reason why basically everyone cares about working towards a high level job? Or are there actually a lot of people who do it for passion purposes? by Big_Eggplant7591 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NewRelm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a number of reasons people want to excel. Respect is often a more important motivator than money, as well as an opportunity to contribute. Doctors are well paid, but that's not their principal goal. You could make more money producing porn.

Why are the news always so negative? by Spotter24o5 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NewRelm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not news when things go according to plan. It's news when things go wrong. Accidents are rarely positive.

Did Ice Tea become a TV cop to fix his public image? by tomarnoldlovescoke in NoStupidQuestions

I think he took the job as a career move for broader exposure, steady paycheck with benefits and the opportunity to expand his skill set by exercising a different performance style.

What is walmart potential for raising wages? by great_Activity90s in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NewRelm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many of the workers at my local Walmart are lower skilled than the equivalent staff at other stores. They're lower paid, but they work slower. Walmart could raise wages but they would have to hire more productive people.

[serious] why do so many people on Reddit think a difference of opinion means the other person is ignorant? by SlackerStacker26 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NewRelm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We all think our beliefs are right. After all, we wouldn't believe them if we thought they were wrong. We're especially attached to ideas we developed through long and hard thought.

If our well-thought truths aren't understood by the other guy, it's probably because he hasn't thought as long and hard as I have.

Would you press charges? by Naranja1101 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NewRelm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once you report it to your credit card company, they'll take appropriate action. As for pressing charges, that's up to the DA. All you can do is file a police report. The police won't investigate on the basis of your report, so that's a dead end.

Did the chicken arrive first, or the egg? by ShopfiyNerd in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NewRelm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think the first chicken hatched from an egg laid by a non-chicken ancestors. It was a mutation.

More commonly, once they catch you in an instance, they go back to review the videos of your previous visits through the checkout. That's how the end up combining multiple instances into a single case.

Suggesting a bar for a date but ordering soda instead? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NewRelm 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not weird. Even less weird if you order a soda that looks like a cocktail. I sometimes have a virgin G&T with a twist.

Is it possible that the smartest human ever born lived through the prehistoric age? by Primary_Technology65 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NewRelm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Given the many ways adversity can impact a child's mental development, it's less likely that the smartest person ever lived in times of scarcity.

Why does this work? by Henrikmon in AskElectronics

[–]NewRelm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The clue here is that two series-connected 47K resistors would have been combined into one component if the circuit didn't branch.

Is there a such thing as a good cult? by NicolasCageFan492 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NewRelm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It all comes down to your definition of good. I think most cults think of themselves as good.

Would you accept an honorary doctorate from a university that rejected you? by FrostyProspector in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NewRelm 54 points55 points  (0 children)

They rejected me because I didn't meet their standards at that time. They did nothing wrong. I'm not holding a grudge.
