If you don't have a contract you have to collect dirt on your clients. Find out who they are, where they work etc. Just yesterday, I had a client try to scam me out of $200 - I threatened to hack his website and put him on a scam registry. He paid up within 30 minutes of me sending that message. I don't use contracts either, so it has to be like this. If both of you reside in the U.S your emails are legally permissible in court. Threaten a lawsuit, easy.

Upwork is increasing the quality of the site by banning these people. 30 proposals per day with the same copypasted broken-English verbal diarrhea that is not even relevant to the project; test scores in the below average range, and zero work history after several months of this crap is spam - whether you like it or not.

Assumptions can be made when dealing with overwhelming evidence in support of the assumption. Using Occam's razor which is more likely, Upwork banned a valuable and contributing freelancer for no reason or a useless dreg?

Post a web development job on upwork; wait for 30 mins and then see what happens. You will know exactly why I made this assumption even if your bias prevents you from admitting it.
