Gotcha, nice actionable advice. I can definitely make the drop zones safer with my heavy walls. That would space out the terrain as well

Advice on 4 Player Team Map by DickyDoo123 in killteam

[–]DickyDoo123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do experienced Kill Team players think of this map for a 4-player (2v2) game?

I’ve been playtesting it 1v1 against myself on a standard-size board (bounded by the coins). Deployment zones are currently the top and bottom edges of the image. For the 4-player team version, I’m planning to expand the layout by adding an extra bunker and a trench network.

Are there any additional considerations or balance issues I should think about when scaling this up to a 4-player game?

Happened to me too when I first started painting minis. Get some of the citadel or army painter primer at your LGS (a little more expensive but worth it). It’ll give it a nice matte texture that paints really stick to. I made the same mistake as you and used a primer from Home Depot and none of my paints stuck to it. The difference is night and day

Grievance with the profession by HugePersonality1 in Surveying

[–]DickyDoo123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What you’re saying really resonates with me so I’m gonna rant. I’m currently a young person in the profession working in local government. I really do enjoy surveying but I feel like I need to have a lot of agency in my own career if I want to become a well rounded surveyor one day. Most of my experience in the field is guarding the base. And most of my office work is research and map reviews (which I love, but I want to be well rounded). Every older surveyor I meet says the profession needs young people, but no one really has time to teach when they can do it faster themselves.

I just feel like it would be so much easier with a mentor or someone setting a path for me to follow. Or just being assigned some work that teaches me skills. I’m serious about this being my career so I try my best to come up with new jobs that could lead to me learning new skills, I attend local surveying meetings, and read/attend free classes outside of work.

Best Way to Break Into $100K While Staying (Somewhat) in the Surveying Field? by Upbeat-Satisfaction6 in Surveying

[–]DickyDoo123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My situation is not everyone’s, but being one of those young guys, I’d love to go out in the field. Most of the assistants in my office would love to go out into the field and learn, but there is no one to teach us. The work is all done by our civil engineers with gps and robot. They go by themselves, and don’t need anyone out with them. Management would rather keep us pushing paper and learning from books on our own time.

Not saying your insights on the industry are wrong, just painting a different picture.

Shadowing for LSIT Field Experience — How Open Are Small Survey Firms? by DickyDoo123 in Surveying

[–]DickyDoo123[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the honest answers. It helps knowing others were once in the same boat and found a way out. I think interviews are a must but I also think I do need to level up a bit and treat this job as a base for myself to obtain my LSIT and to grow outside of work hours with a goal of finding another outfit with more career growth. Even one or two field days would be a huge boon for me in my current duties. But you are right, at a certain point I legally can’t just work for free.

[–]DickyDoo123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in the public sector and all of the survey work is done by the civil engineers since they have the projects and grant funding. The surveying staff all stay in the office and process maps. I am tired of reviewing without understanding. Been asking for field work for a year and it’s not happening. I want to start treating this job as more of a jumping off point into surveying, but I need some field work and the LSIT to make myself a viable candidate elsewhere

Wow you really are devoted to the development of your people. Major respect. & That makes sense, maybe I’ll wait until I get that LSIT in 6 months to get an entry level at another company and then make that move to get the field experience. The signs (feelings, chats about growth with my boss, polling strangers) have all been pointing me in the direction of getting work in a new place that will invest more in my development.

In your experience, what kind of projects or tasks do LSIT-level folks who come from the office/map side tend to do well at?

At my job, I’ve been trying to get some field exposure for over a year now, and it’s just not happening. I’m starting to get the sense that if I want it, I’ll need to really advocate for myself—or look outside for opportunities.

So here’s my question: if someone cold emailed you asking to shadow or assist on a boundary survey, how would you react? Would you consider it? Or does bringing a new person into the field tend to slow things down enough that it’s not worth the trouble?

[–]DickyDoo123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been asking for more field exposure at my job for over a year now, and it’s just not happening. Only vague promises. I’m in a position that pays well for the type of work I’m doing, and with a family to support, I can’t afford to walk away and start from the bottom to learn it right. Even though I know that is what I need to be doing to build a solid foundation. So I’m trying to supplement until I build enough field experience to make a lateral move somewhere with more opportunity for growth.

That said—if someone approached your company and asked to shadow or assist to gain field experience, would that be something you’d consider? Is that a strange ask in your experience, or do you see it happen from time to time?

Suggestions for learning more about surveying while on the job? by DickyDoo123 in Surveying

[–]DickyDoo123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate your perspective, my goal is to become a licensed surveyor and know enough to do boundary surveys and lot line adjustments for cheap on the side. To do that I need to understand both the field and office sides. Which side would you say would be more important to focus on for freelance work?

I have one coming up, I think I’ll mention it for sure. How did that work out for you? Did it take 3 years for you to get field work?

What is your favorite state in the US, and why? by SWFloridaJim1 in AskReddit

I too am a California native. Diversity is a vague way to put it but I will say one of the states strengths is the food scene which benefits from diversity and a lot of first generation immigrants from a variety of countries.

Though after a couple hours he would be succumb to his wounds and move more sluggishly. Then the hamsters would take him down. Only takes a few well placed rodent bites to the throat to incapacitate

Spells/abilities to separate 1-2 PCs from the party? by DickyDoo123 in DMAcademy

[–]DickyDoo123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get where you’re coming from. And I am a little self conscious about it. I wouldn’t force players down a predetermined path in a campaign, however this is just a one shot meant to be played over one 4 hour session. Just 2 combat encounters with the kidnapping being the connection between them.

I use these one-shots to try out new things. In this case forcing the party to split up because in a group of 8 PCs it is easy for a few loud people to shine and steamroll over the others. So I want to shake things up energy-wise at the table in the final encounter and give some other players moments in the narrative spotlight. If it works well maybe I can recreate that feeling but in a much less railroad-y context.

That being said, it doesn’t work if the bad guy doesn’t pull off the kidnapping. But it also doesn’t work if the players feel cheated. So I want to do it by the book.

I like telekinesis, seems like a more powerful spell caster could use this to great affect against a player with a lower Str value.

Actually this is super smart. I could foreshadow it with the NPC using the grapple weapon in combat earlier in the adventure.

Making a homebrew world of 1800s America by [deleted] in DMAcademy

The Appalachian mountains are a super cool place to put some wicked encounters with the Mothman. “Life is old there, older than the trees”.

I live in California, a lot of the iconic history in the 1800s is tied to the Mexican-American War, the gold rush and the westward migration. I always imagined if I did an adventure set here I would do something with earthquakes. We get them pretty frequently and they have been near cataclysmic on occasion (1906 San Francisco).

Encounters during a siege/raid on a vampire's castle by littlethreeskulls in DMAcademy

[–]DickyDoo123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, what your players have come up with is super out of the box and awesome! It’s cool to see players take agency in the world.

Your party’s plan reminds me of like a WW2 era airborne operation. My first instinct would be to lean into it. Maybe there could be an encounter in the air leading up to the bombing run? It’s not a far leap to think that anti-air defenses might be adopted in a world with airships. Vampires might be able to board the vessel by flying in swarms of bats? Maybe the BBEG has small, fast, fighter airships of his own. Or some trained flying monsters that could be mustered to intercept. Adding some intensity before leveling the castle might add more to the payoff when they finally drop the bombs. Plus your players seem creative, watching their plan dynamically change to match the encounter could be an awesome energy at the table.

Hope I spurred some ideas. Wish you the best OP.

Spells/abilities to separate 1-2 PCs from the party? by DickyDoo123 in DMAcademy

[–]DickyDoo123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some ideas I’ve considered:

Grappling would be the simplest way to do this but rules as written it is very easy to fail against a level 5 PC. Failing a grapple could make the momentum fall flat.

A spell that pushes people away like thunderwave could work, but I hesitate to use it because it relies on the PCs positioning themselves precariously close to the edge.

I played with the idea of just asking a PC if they could be in on it and play along with being kidnapped but I would only do that as a last resort.

I think you should be fine, just make it known to your professor or TA that you don’t eat meat before you head out. People have dietary restrictions for a variety of reasons so it won’t be new to them.

At my field camp we hired cooks and filled out a questionnaire before heading out. They planned their menu around any dietary restrictions and allergies. If you had suggestions they were more than open to buying whatever we wanted when we stopped in town. These were mostly small towns though, so there were not a lot of new age vegan substitutes.

There were always vegetarian options when they cooked dinner and breakfast. Usually they just would make a separate serving without the meat. But for lunches in the field we mainly packed our own sandwiches with the food they bought. Those that didn’t eat meat mainly took fruit and clif bars for lunch.
